jaklumen
Crossposted from the official forums: Before people say "omg I hate the censor another one is st00pid", hear me out. Every so often, there are reports, rants, and other complaints on offensive Runescape player names. I think the easiest option is to put in a filter/censor at the character creation page, so that offensive names would be rejected. Q & A: 1. Will people complain? Yes, they will, but I think rejecting offensive RSN's through a censor is more effective than labor on the game censor. 2. Won't it turn away new players? It might, but I think many of the players, particularly the long-time ones, will appreciate it if fewer players who think profanity is amusing decide not to play. 3. Why do we need another censor, anyway? I hate the one that's already there! I think a name censor would be less of a headache to maintain and would actually generate fewer legitimate complaints than the in-game one, i.e. I would tend to believe it would be players *trying* to make offensive names that would complain. If any such player wanting an offensive name decides not to play, as I said, I don't think it would be too much of a loss. They can change it or leave. 4. Doesn't Jagex say they would change our RSN's, if necessary? To my knowledge, this is rarely employed. Jagex is busy enough as it is that I think this alternative would be welcomed. Discuss. Smackapotato
Yep, definetly a good idea. Would help get rid of all those idiotic and profane names. Defenetly would have more pro's then con's, and if people do complain about the new censor then I shall look down upon them... :shame: EDIT - Signature far exceeds our sig limits but since it's so colourful you can keep it. hellbellz
Yes, sounds like a good idea. I hate those "White Cr4cker, KKK Member, Gf Plz, etc" accounts. I would report their names, but I don't know how. :| I've seen people banned for their names. I wonder how they got banned though. Well anyway. I think that it's a good idea. zeroxdragonx
I actually like the idea. This would make Runescape a better place for all (sry its corny, but i don't kno how else to put it)

emschorsch1
It's a great idea and nopbody woudl complain because it has nothing to do with us except less annoying names get through. I think it's a brilliant oidea and should be suggested to jagex.
some_kid_v2
even if jagex fixes the bugs, there still bugs out there, thats why a lot of crazy things happen in runescpae....like going behind the bank booths in vorrock east that happened a few years ago
aquariusman
thats why a lot of crazy things happen in runescpae....like going behind the bank booths in vorrock east that happened a few years ago What Happened  Oh, and this would be pure bliss and a godly gift for us all, I eamn, if someone really wants to use a profane name on rs, then tehy are not fit to play rs, not onyl that, but when they grow up and hopefully become mature enough to realize what pure idiocy their name is based on, they will complain how you cannot change your name, even if it is profane and vulgur. There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. Thatregret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new, better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret. It's experience. sined_starbo
Yep all for it as well, nip it in the bud so to speak. I would love them to take it 1 step further and disallow numbers in player names its one thing I cant stand.
drokles
I dont think its gonna work, think about all the good names wich will b caught in the censor. For example, ever since the latest censor update my rsn is *rokles .... I think it would cause alot o trouble although its a cool idea. I'll get there!... eventually

Better filtering code would overcome some of this, and character strings need not be restricted by wild cards.
Dalcyte
i think its obviously something that needs to be added to the game, just how to go about doing it is the problem. Also, with players with already offencive names, how would u deal with them? Also, with players with already offencive names, how would u deal with them? Jagex needs to offer those players an opportunity to change their name. Obviously, I doubt they will go back and change them per se their stated policy, but if the censor is effective, it shouldn't be much of a problem. I highly doubt that most players who would voluntarily change their names would change it to something equally offensive, again. We have a longtime player on Tip here who has already said that he feared he'd be banned for his RSN.
Mementh
they can't. or at least the cost to make it available is more then the trouble that the bad names cause. Right now your billing "account" is your RSN they can't just change this for legal reasons and such :( :boohoo: The following statement is true. The previous statement is false. 60% of all statistics are made up 90% of the time andrew i love you & want you to have my babys!!! I asked around and was told that there was a weak filter for names... why not strengthen it?
FuBai
The problem is that there are many names that are perfectly fine, but would be censored. For instance, you cant say my friend's name without it being censored (bobyang318), but why shouldn't he be allowed that as a name? His real name is Bob Yang... There are many similar isntances. Moreover the censor changes often, with new words becoming blocked - Nob used to be fine, now it is blocked. So names will fall under the "censored" catagory that previously didn't. xKing_Natex
if anyone bothered to read jagex's terms and conditions (which i bet nobody does :-w) it says that jagex reserves the right to change your username.

All the quests they may have done are recorrded in that name, all their friends see them as that name. I say just keep them there and make a stronger than there already is filter on it.
