Well my Uncle bought a computer for 36 dollars (He's a cheapskate) and it has gay stuff in it:

~ 350 MHz

~ 64 MB (I put in 64 more to make it 128)

~ 8 mb Video Card

~ 4 Gb Hard Drive

Well I was wondering if you could work xp on this?

blast i think there is no reason to flame someones buy, he could upgrade it jus not the ram, but theres nothing wrong with good ol 98!

Other then the fact that Microsoft no longer supports it and 48 known vulnerabilities still exist ?

I like to fart silently but deadly in movie theaters

Yes XP will install on it. I've seen XP on a 200Mhz processor with 64Mb of RAM with a little tweaking to make it run comfortably.

The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP Professional include:

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãââ Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãââ At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãââ At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãââ CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãââ Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãââ Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãââ Sound card

̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãââ Speakers or headphones

It'll run, but VERY SLOWLY. I had trouble with a 2.4ghz celeron and 128mb RAM..

ram was your problem.. CPU was more then enough.. but there is not enough ram so it was probabbly using the HD alot

get 1 gig minimum 2 gigs for best

Yeah, I know. I added 512mb into it and it works just fine. I was comparing the amount of RAM with runedrune900's computer. :)

That computer is auful. You will never be able to run windows XP on that thing, Even if you did install it you wont have enough space to install anything else. :wall:

You're on the right track there. That computer has pretty much the same specs as mine and I'm comfortably running vector linux on it. (Ubuntu killed it outright)

I was gonna try using ubuntu on my computer till my 200 giger started to die (seems to be ok now but nothing critical is on there now)

So i have no HD space to use and i might try the live version for now

from my experiences, celeron SUCK. ive never had luck with them lol

I'm quoting this from someone else, I wish I thought of it:

"Celerons are exactly the same as Pentiums, they're just made of celery." So I don't see what you problem's you've had if they're bascially the same.

There's this one AMD processor on http://www.newegg.com that's only $76(sorry, don't remember name), but it's clocked at 2.0Ghz, making it better than the entire computer combined. :D Get a suitable motherboard, 512 RAM, and you'll be fine.

Idiots, when you know what you're all talking about you can come back and argue.

He asked if it'll run XP, it will. Props to username388 for the minimum specs.

I'd recommend Windows 98 though. The problem with XP is it's memory hungry. You'd also need to optimize it, so it'd probably not even look like XP if you were running it.

Ubuntu, would probably run too. But it'd be mighty slow unless you knew how to optimize it.

First choice OS: Windows 98.

Second: Windows 2000.

Third: XP.

Never in a million years: ME.

Not Windows 98. Personally I'd go the Linux route, but that's just me. Windows 98 is unsupported and old. I'd use 2000 if you really want Windows.

If he has another computer, you could turn this into a nice little firewall for him. Check out Smoothwall if you're interested.

... Yeah Windows 2000 although my second choice, wouldn't be as practical for home use. As it's a business operating system.
