learners permit

I hated getting that stuff...30 hours of class time, and 6 hours of behind the wheel. A bit excessive in my opinion.

I really wouldn't call it an era. It was more of a definitive time period during which dinstinctive characteristics were expressed in similar ways.

Don't worry about insurance right now. You'll have to go to your local police station or get online to find a book to study. Study hard. I would say read through the whole thing at least once. Then, go and take the written exam. If you pass (minimum score is 80%), you have to wait at least a month before you can take the driver's portion. You don't have to have insurance to get your license. You don't have to take Driver's Ed at all to get any of these things.

I live in California and you goto drivers ed for 30 hours and then take the writen test at 15.5. After a 1 hour in car lession with a teacher you can now drive with an adult over 25 with a drivers lisence from your state. At 16 and after 50 hours of in car training you can now take the test to get your licence. You goto DMV and one of the testers will enter the car with you as you drive the car.

You can contact an insurace company and they can issue a temporaly insurance so you can purchace a car then get it permant. This is for states that require driving insurance to drive.

In the US, you can get your permit at 15. You take a test, both written and driving or just written in some places. You won't need insurance unless you actually own a car.

It's different in every state.

Sixteeen here.

Depends what your state laws are.

In California, you can get your permit at 15 1/2. You need drivers ed (which is usually a class that everyone takes in freshman or sophomore year) and at least 6 hours of driving with an instructor (40 total with anyone else).

If you have a permit, you are covered by your "guardian", which is whoever you are driving with. You won't need insurance until you get the actual license :)

In Iowa you can get your learners permit at 14 (which is what I did). Now I've got to take drivers ed because I turn 16 on Thursday.. Drivers Ed starts tomorrow and let's just say I'm not thrilled about the 36 hours and $360 USD I'm about to waste :wall: :wall:
OMG 14?!

But seriously, I could get my permit in around 3 months :x

I got my learners a year ago, when I turned 16. I'm in driving school right now though, just completed my 25 hours in class. I'm required to do 10 hours in car, and I've had 4 hours of lessons so far. Hopefully I can be on the road alone by the end of october!! :P

Do you live in Virginia? Because those are our laws here. After you get your permit it expires when you turn 19 (I think, mine expires in 2008 on my birthday and I got it a year and 3 months ago. I will be turning 19 in '08)

To get your license, after you get your permit, you are suppose to drive for 40 hours(can be lied about) then you take behind the wheel after passing driver's ed(through the school system, it's free in my county; fairfax) After you pass behind the wheel if you had waited 9 months you get your 90 days license and a court date, after you go to court for a little meeting or w/e you get your hard license(verticle, turns horizontal at 21). Or wait 'til your 18 then take a drivers test at the DMV and if you pass you get your license w/o passing drivers ed or behind the wheel.

You should probably mention where you live.. Different places mean different ways of doing things. If drivers ed was available online where I live that would be awesome, but sadly it's not..
