early running advice

All these tips are fine, but when it comes down to it in the end, when you wake up in the morning, you just have to get the heck up.

It's quite easy really. There's no trick. You just get up.

The sooner you stop thinking about it and mucking around debating it in your head, the sooner you actually will.

I can find it quite hard getting up in the morning to exericse. My dad's done it for 30 odd years because we've always had a dog that needs exercising. If you have that kind of simple drive to get you up it's easier I think, you have no choice.

In your case, try a cold shower, or splashing cold water on your face, or find a song that never fails to motivate you, find a picture of a reason for your motivation and stick it somewhere in your bedroom etc.

As for the running bit, find a course that's a good length, and do it at whatever pace you want to, don't make it too fast first time though. Then try and improve on that time each time. Running regularly last year from September through to around January I brought the time it takes me down to run the course from 22 minutes to 15. I was really pushing myself by the end, but I feel a lot better for it, and it's helped me with other sports.

One more thing, never actually stop running while you're out on a run. It may be tough, but over a relatively short course it's possible, and once you've stopped it's hard to get going again. Keep going and you'll feel better for it.

Something that has always helped to force me get out of bed was placing the alarm clock as high as possible and across the room. That way I had to get up, walk across the cold floor, drag a chair to my bookcase and stretch to reach the clock. By then I was usually too awake to go back to bed. Also, keep your running clothes close to your bed.

OK.. This coming from a person on a X country team. When you set your alarm clock, make it loud, loud enough that it startles you even if you're already awake. Second, turn on a light. Third, use the bathroom or splash your face with water.

For the actual running, don't try for speed at first. Just pick a time limit and try to run the whole time. As you keep running, you'll start farther and farther from your house. If you cramp up, then push your liver up. The liver is under your ribcage on the right side of your stomach. Hope I helped!

Go to bed early too, so you can get the most out of your run. As many of others have said though, it comes down to you getting out of bed and just doing it. If you do for some odd reason miss your morning run, do not let that bum you out too much. Run that evening, and try running again the next morning.

Wow... I should know something about this. I got up at 4:30am every morning to run/work out last year.

Ok, to start, go to bed as early as you can.

If possible, take a shower before you go out, it'll help you wake up. And uhh.. don't forget to shower after too.

But mostly... you've gotta just do it. Force yourself to get up, or have your parents/a friend make you get up.

being a member of one of the best XCountry teams in the state, i run on average 3-5 miles a day at practice. during daily doubles in the summer, the first session was at 7:30am.

Best way to get up and go?

say the night before, i WILL go running in the morning, no matter how hard it hurts.

Do NOT let yourself not go, dont settle for that. just get it over with, you will feel a lot better once you're done anyways. its better than coffee, seriously.

if possible, run with friends, it makes it a whole lot easier.

do NOT do the 12 minute thing to see how in shape you are. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!! BAD IDEA!!!

set goals for yourself, like im going to run 10 minutes straight today, then increase to 20 minutes once thats easy, then 30, and so on. and don't make the transitions too quickly. do them as they come.

ALWAYS STRETCH before and after, yes after, no matter how tired you are. 'tis the key to happiness and happy muscles.

i personally like the alarm clock being on the other side of the room. :)
