If im right, i think the value of jagex could be very high like 100mil+

so if i owned it, i would certainly sell :$

I would also buy shares if they went public :P

thats means you'd make the one off 100 mil wheras if you kept the controling stake you'd make alot more

Also jagex's compression technology was created by Andrew a long time ago.

Maybe so, but runescape wont rise forever.

well also you have to think about the money they are making from advertising to add to the 50 something million they are making

I've got to say I really enjoyed this article - probably one of the best I've read actually.

In reply to the person on the first page who doesn't like this article being about anything outside of Runescape's "in-game"... I must say it's really refreshing to read about the "real life" aspect of all this. Why would you want just articles about in-game happenings? Those are usually dull and have no real purpose I've found.

When your one of the richest youths with 32m punds i don't think you'll be selling soon. This is speculation, it is in no way right or wrong, just a point of view.

^^ A very old sig, i think i should make a new one for me =)^^

lets look at costs to start with,

upgrading tech is a non issue, as jagex is mearly paying for servers and bandwidth, that cost is negliglble, look at sites like putfile and youtube, they consume a months worth of jagex's bandwidth and server space in a day.

the employees, jagex uses A TON of interns, which explains the [cabbage]ty customer service, and half assed coding... all mmorpgs have [cabbage] code, the game is a nonending work in progress.

the profits.

750k paying members at five bucks a month is 3mil on the low end. more like four.

the ads, aka spyware, it amounts to pocket change but prob pays the electric bill.

Uk taxes are about 30% for corporations, which is much less than that for citizens, or individual taxes.

Jagex has one massive concern, which are the unpaid taxes on pixels sold for real life items. aka money, which is the primary reason for their rule against real life item trading, they can claim the player broke the rule, but according to thier tos they own the game an all characters, this will be interesting to watch play out.

all in all, jagex nets a bundle, the growlers take the money out as it comes in to protect it from lawsuits, and then pay the UK citizen tax, i'm guessing they take home about 2.5 mil a year a piece assuming its an equal partnership, granted I have no real data, and would love to hear your feedback.

as for selling it, that would be a trick, its a java based game, that is generally a shiitt platform for gaming, its homegrown and I bet takes alot of work and understanding to keep successful. Its not worth the headache to sony

i'm more curious about other jagex sprouted companies, all those interners are ripe for contracting out as IT slaves. betcha they have an IT firm too.

126 combat. 2001 total. 101 prayer. and off to go WoWin.

WHEEE NO MORE RANDOMS!!!! -.-

Selling the "ideas and implementation behind RuneScape" would be pointless, it's just a process. Anyone with a degree in marketing could figure out WHY Runescape is popular: It's free, it's little load time, it's targeted to teens and young-adults, it's browser based, it's an MMORPG for those who cannot afford and MMORPG, it's not anime-styled graphics (which allows for a more serious instead of a cutesy gameplay).

ever heard of a term called plagarism? you have to buy ideas before you can use them, or else you go to prison.

Free, small load times, targeting youth, being browser-based...

That's not plagarism...

Great article. Must say that I'm amazed that jagex makes so much money, a thing I never would have guessed, but then again, it makes sense. I just hope that if Jagex do sell the game, that it won't affect the gamers, they be f2p og p2p.

A new study shows that 98% of teenagers listen to emo music. The other 2% have stayed straight gangster. If your apparantly the 0% who still listens to rock, put this in your signature.

Nice article.

It seems unlikely that they would be selling RS anytime soon with the amount of money they seem to be making at the moment. But who knows, what plans they have in store.

But whatever the future holds, sure seems interesting. :P

Thanks to WithTheQuickness for the sig!

I am a 45 year old mother of 2 sons. When I read this artical about the sale, I had to join the form. I want people to know what someone my age thinks about this. We have been playing Runescape for the past year and ah half. I really like this game. It's the only video type game I have ever been able to play. I hope it always stays the same! I love Runescape the way it is. Guess I'm just ah kid at heart.

woof1313

Personally i hope they do sell.

It took years for them to work out basic improvements to the game. Player house 4years? first atempt took 2years and failed then another 2 years after being told basically how to fix the problem.

Scams, Hacks and etc. have been around from the very first days of runescape and they just keep getting more and more players doing this even on members worlds. they have utterly failed here

They could do alot and should be doing alot more. The rate of expantion is at a bare min. The game needs more content in just about every feild of game play. The most lore in the game was only just resently added and before that their was almost none.

Basically they should be hiring addtional staff for a big expansion, instead they are draging alot at the bare min. of what they should be doing.

For what players are paying for and how quickly they are going through content and large exspantion is needed and should have been in the works already.

So yes i hope they do sell because they are just taking far to long to do basic stuff.

i dont think they would sell it.. if they keep goin glike this with new updatea all of the time they would make alot more money, and btw.. 850k players pay $5 a month but there are also alot of players who pay ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¡Ãâì6,50 a month through other payment options than the credit card so thats like $7,50-8,00 a month for some of us [for instance me =D] and they make more than just 50m annual

Well, it wouldn't be plagiarism at all, and not just because it's misspelled. Plagiarism is "the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work". What you are describing would be copyright violation.

I don't think Andrew and Paul will sell anytime soon. However, if they do...they should expect death threats from N0valyfe..

Oh man, haha that was hilarious. . Too bad he doesn't play RS.

They won't sell anytime soon. I think they love doing what they do too much.

Trix.--quit WoW as of 12/07

Thank you 4be2jue for the wonderful sig and avatar!

=; why would they want to sell it if they earn over 50M+ per month? i mean most people won't give up that huge amount profit. as far as i can c, jagex is running in good shape. i really dont see any reason they would want to sell it.. any1 agree? :uhh:

Quit runescape on Jan 6th of 2008, at level of 115 with around 150M worth of item in bank...however stats still remains

my youtube channel with many FSX videos i made. please leave a comment if you will

good topic..

But if Jagex decides to sell out...

No more F2P members and....

The prices for P2P will go higher and the need to download thing on you computer will be necessary for game play...

So JAGEX please don't sell out, you are as good as it is...!

Nope. Jagex still only gets the $5. The extra you pay for non-credit card payments are fees charged by the payment company.

No, it wouldn't. The terms I mentioned are not unique to one game, many have them. You can't claim RS has rights to them.

I think the answer as to what makes Runescape so successful is simple:

You can play it literally ANYWHERE you have internet access and a computer made in the last 5 years.

I mean come on, how many of us have logged on during study hall or between college classes? Try doing that with WoW or almost any other MMORPG ever made.

i think it's interesting to think about what a companies next move is, i don't know much about it, surprisingly enough you don't learn much in a year 9 commerce class...

I disagree with a few points in this article. Firstly when you say that large companies buy up smaller ones, they change the product or disappear entirely. This is basically wrong. If a large company spends millions, or billions (in the case of google.com buying youtube.com) you are not going to let the profit potential of that company just ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬Åfizzle out̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ
