White to Black Belt in 2 1/2 Years

Featured Replies

Is it really this easy...?

My cousin, let's call him David, got a black belt in 2 1/2 years.

Now I'm just wondering...wtf... I thought it took 3-6 years to get a black belt (unless you didn't have to money to buy the next belt to advance). Black belt as in you can kick several people's arse(perferably of same age) if they try to gang up on you, or maybe whope someone's arse that's 2 times your age and strength reflecting the average of those ages.

Now maybe there are certain people who can get it in about 1-2 1/2 years, but they're probably prodigies.

I'm just wondering what you Tip.It's think about the black belt.

Is my definition of black belt stupid or out of jeolousy, or has the real definition of a black belt gone down the drain?

As far as I know, it usually depends on the dojo ones goes to. Perhaps your friend's dojo/teacher has lesser requirements to get to a black belt.

Ops, forgot to add it's hapkido.

Hapkido is a little faster than some other martial arts, myself, I know 2 16s who already are black belts on it.

I don't think somebody is mentally prepaired for the black belt after 2 years of training, though.

Martial arts shouldn't be used to "whope someones arse". And I don't see the point in belts.

The whoping someone's arse part is in self-defense, or martial arts tornaments.

Don't know about Hapkido, but that shouldn't be able at least in Karate (which most people would first think about). It took me from age 13 to age 18 to advance to the 2nd Dan (in shotokan) grade of black belt, and that included a lot of mental/ethical excercises and tests which not even nearly everybody in the group could pass, so it could take even longer.

I wouldn't say that was possible in shotokan karate, which is what I do. Most of the black belts have been training for much longer than 2 and 1/2 years.

I think 2 and 1/2 years wouldn't give you a proper appreciation of the martial art that you were studying. As for kicking people's wagons, that's not just reserved for black belts. Those extra few kata don't make a huge difference to your free sparring abilities. I haven't been training for that long but i've still beaten black belts my age in free sparring competitions.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

Like hell.

Black belt is where the real training should start. Everything leading up to it is supposed to prepare you, both mentally and physically. Most martial arts, however, are reduced to little more than sports and hobby activities, and so people are content to just pay a bit of money for lessons and "achieve" whatever.

As for kicking other people's arses, let your cousin spar with a streetfighter, or someone who does FMA. Or, god help him, someone who practices hard Tai Chi. A black belt doesn't mean that you're suddenly able to hold your own against someone who practices a different style to what you're used to fighting.

That's exactly what I'll teach my kids one day too. Ultimately no amount of training will protect even somebody like Bruce Lee (in real life) against 6 people with brass knuckles, running away being the best possible option.

To truly be able to effectively oppose and knock down violent people, I would argue you don't even need a black belt; a green belt will still be able to beat an arrogant, preferably irish, drunkard swinging his arms around like a monkey trying to hit your face.

You don't even need any sort of formal training to knock down someone trying to hurt you. I guess that's one of the big misconceptions about martial arts - that they "teach" you how to knock people down in self-defence.

Really, all it takes is a good kick to the ankle, knee or nadgers, and they're down for long enough for you to get away. If you hit them hard enough, you can help yourself to their wallet as well.

I don't recommend that last part for anyone, though. That's called robbery.

Don't worry, everybody 'gets it'.. Just like video game ROM sites state you can use the file for a maximum of 24 hours unless you have a "backup", or the p2p filesharing programs that have a "disclaimer" that their networks are and should be only used for distributing legal documents, or the private mmorpg server sites that say 'you may only use our site for educational purposes'... 8-)

I did Capoeira for some time and not even the trainers had a white belt (wich is the highest rank), not even a red one, but a purple one, so the third highest and they where original brazilians and could do amazing stuff, like doing flic flacks through the hall ending in a one handed handstand or stretched backflips and stuff like that.

i wasup to blue belt with one of the tapes around the ends but this was way back in like 2000 when i was like 11 or 10 or something

i had to stop goign cuz my dad coulnt take me, other wise id still be in it now

i was in for almost a year maybe, anyway its not that hard some things are hard to learn but i cant remember anything of it now

I got my black belt in Tae Kwon Do after less than 2 years, so yea.

What's harder is the first degree, then second, all the way up to 9th. I think my Master was only a 6th himself and just tested and received his 7th a few years ago. He's been doing it since he was 5, and he has a 10 year old kid now he's been doing it since he was 4 or 5 aswell. I dunno' how old he is, but probably around 40. :ohnoes:

WTF or ITF?

Also, there can be only one 9th degree in the world, right?

I'm sure there is more than one, but I can't say for certain.

Also, I have no idea what those letters stand for. If I learned them back then, I don't remember them now, but they're not ringing any bells...Every place is different, so maybe I never learned anything of them, what do they stand for? I recall seeing "WTF" on some sparring gear on Ebay once and laughed because of what it stood for on the 'net. :P

Meh.. I can tell why you got your TKD black belt in less than two years. :|

...Eh?

Because I don't know what three letters stand for? For one, it was...8 years ago, and I might not have even learned them in the first place because EVERY PLACE IS DIFFERENT.

So what do they stand for?

(fyi: I was one of the best students in the place and have many trophies from tournies. gg.)

Do you mean World TKD Federation and International TKD Federation?

I don't see the relevance anyways.

The different federations have completely different avaliation methods, curriculums and tuls, that's why I was asking. They are basically different martial arts.

Maybe on WTF two years is the average time, I don't know. That's why I was asking.

On ITF, people usually take from 4 to 7 years to get black belts.

I might not have even learned them in the first place

Yeah, that's what I mean. People who get their belts way too fast usually don't learn everything they could've learned.

If you only need a green belt, or only a well placed kick even, whats te point of Black belt? Mental Discipline? :-s And if so (the part about mental discipline) whats it used for?

Bleh, once I get off my lazy bum and go to Imageshack, there will be a picture here.

Dude. I was 11. Apparently it wasn't relevant to my training to know that there are others who take twice as long to get theirs, lol.

I knew nothing of it. I learned all my stuff, I fought at tournies...I got my belt the same way everyone does.

I advanced rapidly when I did Karate. Might as well take into consideration that some people apply themself a lot better than others and hence progress more efficiantly.
