It's post like that of the original quote that make me want to get out of this country as well. Our standards are way below that of Europe, China, Japan, Russia, Australia, Canada. If these countries can do so good, why can't we?

My exchange student from Slovenia, he is 10 times smarter than me, he has a way better study and homework habit. And I do really good in school. Another exchange student from France, she aces everything in math, I'm pretty good at math, and she doesn't even know English as her first language, and still aces everything. Same goes for some other exchange students.

Case in point? Kids in other parts of the globe are getting a better education, which leads to a better understanding to get into college, a job, and so on.

The US will fail.

Hehe, you know what always surprised me. Canada and the US are like in the same situation, and yet Canada is 10x better than the US. It may be more expensive, but it is also way better.

If Canada can do so well, why can't the big US superpower do better? Why are they advancing beyond us? We're suppose to be a country where you can live the American Dream. It should be renamed, the Canadian Dream.

One person many not make an impact, but all you [bleep] leaving will make a negative impact.

I often regret my ancestors coming to this country in the first place. Germany healed, it's a nice place now. Booming economy.

It should be renamed Free Country. Then China or Canada can come take us over.

Yeah, its to bad one person doesn't make a difference.

Wow. On a scale of 1-10, that post scored 10 under emoness.

Meh. Our schools are alright. I agree that they are under funded. My mom is a teacher and she is SEVERELY overworked and underpaid. More people need to know what teachers have to go through.

My school has a high dropout rate, and a pretty bad drug problem, but there are some extremely smart people there as well. I love my school. I think I learn alot, and I think that I will be prepared for my future with the education that I'm getting. I think that my school is preparing me with all the tools I'll need to pursue my dreams. I think that's what really matters. Of course, some of life's most important lessons aren't even taught in school.

Schools are political now? Always thought that they were educational...

One thing I've read about is that in most cases, principals don't have the power to fire a teacher because s/he is on a contract. Give the principals the ability to fire incompetent teachers and that will help.

What happened with the No Child Left Behind thing btw?

The no child left behind act is officially considered inefficient, to a point where the president acknowledges its poor execution. However, it seems like during the next presidential election in the US it will be a big focus

Note that the following opinion comes from a student who takes H/AP classes

One of the major problems with the US school system now is the policy on testing, mainly, the retest policy. Homeroom i hear people say they're just going to fail the test and take the easier retest for an easy 70%. They learn less as a result, and even though those students pass school, their actual grade, per se, is reflected in state tests. students dont learn crap in school unless they want to, such as in H/AP classes. everyone in my classes take them because they take the classes seriously.

teaching styles are bad, too. filler worksheets and mindless projects take up too much time yet very little comes out of it. When was the last time i made a poster for a presentation? uhh... eighth grade? the teachers are bad too, but there is little anyone can do; the demand for teachers is high while the supply is incredibly low

My classes are good. I'm an honors student at my school. I think the honors side of the schools are all, for the most part, very good. It's the non-honors part of our schools that are not top-notch. The thing is, most of our country's kids are not taking honors classes because of the poor teaching in the early grades when it counts. As for food, yes, it's horrible.

Yea, mi madre is a special ed teacher. So by No Child Left Behind, her special ed kids have to take their regular grade level test or MEAP in my school (soon to be eliminated). So, it's kind of unfair.

My concentration teacher (the class I have for 2 hours, Art 3d) prepares us well if we are going into an art college. Just today Kansas City Art Institute came to talk to us. But my school offers limited electives, of which are Spanish, and if you're lucky, a concentration class for an elective, Art 2d, Art 3d, Voice/Keyboard/Theatre/Dance. But as I said, Spanish is the only language we offer, besides online which is offered only to upper class men, and is limited. My school is 6-12, but there are only 600 kids total, and it's separated between middle and high school.

All in all, my gifted school, really isn't all that gifted.

I think the biggest problem is respect. Kids dont respect others when they're young, they'll never respect anyone the rest of their lives. I vote YES to bring back capital punishment.

In the USA, under the No Child Left Behind Act, if you attend a high school that receives federal funding your school system is required to turn over your private information to the U.S. military for recruitment purposes! (With the exception of a few private schools, almost every school in the USA receives federal funding.) Your school is NOT required to tell you that they are giving your private information to the military.

YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF! Sec. 9528 of the No Child Left Behind Act gives you the right to OPT OUT. This means that you can turn in a form, signed by your guardian or parent, which states that you do not want the military to have access to your private information. This will remove you from the list your school hands over to the military - but only for the school year during which you opted out. To keep your name and information out of the military's hands you must opt out each and every school year!

that is what i was talking about before, and for the ppl that dont think its true its 100% true

Yeah, i think another problem is that kids nowdays worry too much about reputations than they do about schoolwork. And being "smart" has lead to the title of being a geek.

Well, honestly i just do good in school cause my future depends upon it, but then again i live in California where are test scores are low. I think a reason why our test scores are low, is because we get a LOT of students from around the world, who don't speak English as a first language. So, with that in mind, we test, and they have to get tested on things that make no total sense. I think having students from around the world is a great way to learn about different cultures. :D I know one girl from Korea, Japan, three of my friends are from Vietnam, another from Indonesia, a lot from Mexico, and other places. But really i think it's cool.

That reminds me. I was once watching this TV show about school around the U.S, and how in this one state they feed kids pizza, fries, all that stuff EVERYDAY. And how in Illinois they make it's required sp you have to take P.E in k-12. I know in a lot of places they don't force that.

I still think we should put more concern on our grades. But that's their decision, scary enough though, we are the future generation, and if we think the adults nowdays are messed, what is a lot teen population going to be like in 10 years...?
