Futurama Posted November 29, 2006 Share Posted November 29, 2006 just something ive had in my mind for well...several years now... what makes something supernatural? all this talk of ghosts, sixth senses and whatnot...is it really supernatural, or is just that we havn't seen it enough to make any sense of it? im sure a long time ago, stars and fire were supernatural to some. but with enough to time to study it, it's completely natural afterall... are supernatural things just something we havn't seen enough to understand? Enough people have claimed to see ghosts that it deserves a scientific look at. When fire and stars were supernatural the meaning different, at that time it meant 'that which we do not understand'. However, there are many things we don't understand now yet they are not considered supernatural - the mind, for example. They are, however, testable. Regarding ghosts, I wouldn't call them supernatural. I'd call them, not investigated by science enough. Enough people have claimed to see ghosts that it deserves a scientific look at. Not investigated enough?! They have been investigated extensively, it is just that there are no results to publish because they aren't real. The fact that there is not much known about them is because there is nothing TO know. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be. I personally have a really cool picture of what appears, in everyone who has seen it's mind, to be a ghost. I really should post that...Maybe I'll get to it tomorrow. It's a picture of my house in 1890 something when it was first built, and there is a family of 3 standing on the porch, and off to the far side on the lawn, there is what appears to be a little girl, which coinsides with what we hear in our house sometimes...Little girl laughter, mostly. My mom has heard it more than anyone, and she's not the type to lie about something so trivial. She doesn't really tell anyone about it so it's not like she's trying to get attention, and I've heard it myself, so. :P One could argue it was a girl outside, because there is a park a block down, but you hear it very clearly, and my mom said she thought it was my sister (skipping school :P) at the time, so she looked around the house and looked outside and saw noone. I dunno', I don't want to sound kookie. I just have a picture that would be very hard to explain. I'll see about scanning it tomorrow so I can show you guys. Something that is supernatural can't be tested. Do I believe that supernatural things such as ghosts exist? Yes. I do. And the probability of ghosts and psychics being real is probably less than the changes of winning the lottery even if you forgot to buy a ticket. Does anyone here know of the TV series Medium? Its based on the real life story of Allison DuBois who claims to have been able to solve detective cases by communicating with the dead. However I couldn't finsd a single validated case where she has actually been correct rather than a vague "over there-ish". edit: bah i was writing loads about her from my memory and found this webpage which explains far better than I could how much of a charlitan Allison is. On the subject of ghosts again people watch shows such as Most Haunted on LivingTV and belive this crap. Despite the fact that Derek Akorah has been exposed as a hoax several times and Yvette Fielding has been accused of making things up about things she heard or saw. Keeping on the subject of Derek Akorah and other mediums, they can be explained though simple cold reading. I am a member of the JREF, the James Randi Educational Fund which aims to expose frauds and charlitans for what they really are. Randi has offered a $1,000,000 prize for the first person to prove something supernatural, this can include dowsing for water, homeopathy, mind reading, speaking to the dead, ghosts etc, and not a single person has ever come close. In fact most high profile psychics outrightly refuse to take part because they know they will fail such as Sylvia "long nails" Browne.
