edge of the universe?

Featured Replies

the question is this: is there and 'end' or 'edge' to the universe? or does it keep going forever?

im not too sure myself, but i believe in the expanding universe theory -

friedmann (expanding) universe

what i imagine is that matter (stars, galaxies, etc) is expanding, in line with this theory, but the space they are expanding into is infinite.

tell us what you think and your ideas.

just say there is an edge.. if whats beyond that is empty space... its volume and still part of the universe. if whats beyond that is nothing but a solid 'wall,' its matter and still part of the universe.

one things for sure.. if there were and edge, and the universe, from that point foreward, no longer existed, the edge would be something we dont yet scientifically understand.

lol, good episode, saw it the other day from memory

The Universe contains over 100 billion galaxies,

Every hour the Universe expands by a billion miles in all directions.

Our galaxy is 100 000 light-years, it's astounding to think of something so large that it takes light itself 100 000 years to travel from one end to the next. Amazingly, our galaxy is one of the smaller ones. So, does the universe go on forever? Then again, what's forever? If the universe expands, what space does it expand into? Or, what's beyond the universe's edge?

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

100,000 light years eh? That's about the size of a normal spiral galaxy, give or take a few 1000 lightyears.

Yea, I think I read that the accepted size of the Universe is currently 78 billion light years accross...And growing, some think.

We can't even see everything in the universe so why worry about something so silly as an edge.

Because some of us, unlike you, have imaginations and look for more in life than physics equations.

I don't know, but I believe my best guess would be that there is no edge.

because humans are curious

What's wrong with being practical? I would rather spend my life doing achievable things and know I can fulfil them rather then wishing what could be; why can't I question its value? I think Earth and its beauty is vivid enough without having to introduce more then what there is. If I was all about physics equations, then I would give you some speculative theory then the truth; Someone's being a bit grumpy.

For the sake of the thread, there probably is no hard edge, whatever that means.

Lol ever think of questions that make your head go blank?

like thinking about if their was nothing in the whole universe, nothing.

But then you think "then what is their thats the whole world its just.." * Brain shutdown commencing * :P

or if their actually was a hard edge (their wouldn't be)

imagine going to the end and it was just black cardboard boxes and you knock it down and you see some guy on the computer about to 'run' earthquake and he tells you that no one could get here then he puts you back where you were and deletes your memory of it.

What if the Universe ends like a galaxy? And is really like a galaxy in a bigger universe?

Yup. We're spiral all right. But, there are other galaxies that are far larger. Of course, our galaxy could always get eaten up from another larger galaxy.

What if there is a giant unicorn which waves its horn around. When it does, nuggets of universes appear and we are only one of them emot-2.png.

There is probably two questions in life, which humans have trying to answer since the anyone can remember

1. What is the meaning of life?

2. How big is the universe

I think that there must be a twist to it, it maybe like a teleport r something, transporting you back to the other side or something. Or, we may be in a game or something, and the reason for why the universe keeps expanding, is because the makers of the game are trying to make it harder for us to get out.

That's fine for you, but why call people silly for not being pragmatic every second of their life?

summerpngwy6.jpg

Whether or not there's an edge to the universe, and whether or not it is still expanding, we'll probably be obliterated (by nuclear war or the sun's explosion) before we ever get there.

I find it interesting that there are people out there who believe in the multiverse (that there is more than one universe all stacked together). I thought the whole point of the universe was that it encapsulates everything. How can there be multiple universes? Wouldn't they just be part of one universe?

dude, its from an action movie but if thats what u believe then ok :-w . i think that our universe is surrounded by antimatter which is being annhilated when it comes in contact with real matter and is pushed back. eventually, this antimatter will overpower the real matter, hence the big crunch theory
