Well, That's weird. Does your society all pretty much follow the same religion?

Haha, even though Judaism is a pretty minor religion, I'm very surprised you could've lived for this long without ever hearing about it. Do you know what Ramadan or Vesak are?

Anyways, happy Hanukkah to you runescapeloser22 8-) (and everybody else celebrating Hanukkah)

Well, seeing as how I haven't put my faith into any religion yet, I'm not Jewish. But I'm in the holiday spirit so Happy Hanukkah! Hope you get some nice gifts ;)

Judaism is a pretty small religion. Not even half of one percent in the entire world, I believe.

Judaism

Adherents worldwide approx. 14 million

There are over 6 billion people in the world, so about ~0.25% are jews.. Compared to religions like islam, christianity, hinduism (which all have 900 million or more followers) judaism is a very small religion despite what you may think of it personally.

Therefore it's at least slightly possible somebody may not have heard about it. Do many western people know about Sikhism even though it has more followers than Judaism? (I do, and some of my friends do, but I know a lot of people don't)

Hey! I just got on TV for our Synagauge showing it's brand new Menorah outside

Had a great night, and topped off with being on the news :D

Wow, you get 8 gifts every of the 8 nights.

Statistically, the average person shouldn't really know Jews exist, since we're such a minority. But here's why I love this quote by Mark Twain:

"...If statistics are right, the Jews constitute but one percent of the human race. It suggests a nebulous dim puff of stardust lost in the blaze of the Milky way. properly, the Jew ought hardly to be heard of, but he is heard of, has always been heard of. He is as prominent on the planet as any other people, and his commercial importance is extravagantly out of proportion to the smallness of his bulk. His contributions to the world's list of great names in literature, science, art, music, finance, medicine, and abstruse learning are also away out of proportion to the weakness of his numbers. He has made a marvelous fight in this world, in all the ages; and had done it with his hands tied behind him. He could be vain of himself, and be excused for it.

The Egyptian, the Babylonian, and the Persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away; the Greek and the Roman followed; and made a vast noise, and they are gone; other people have sprung up and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out, and they sit in twilight now, or have vanished. The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality?"

- Mark Twain

Anyway, back on the main topic. Tonight I got this bad boy for the big screen:

I already got the Wii which went to Hannukah, so I'm not getting much else.

Okay, if you want to define a religion by current followers. I would define it more by impact on the world, in which case, Judaism is huge.

And yeah, I've been to a Sikh temple.

There aren't too many jews in austria. Guess that has something to do with the Nazis trying to exterminate them. There are plenty of Moslems though, so i know what Ramadan is. Don't know Vesak either.

For me, i just get stuff on night one, and its usually not big, as my family are the kind who celebrate hunnukah, but give main presents at Xmas

Anyway, Here it goes. A simple Jewish History.

There were a group of people who lived in the Middle East. A prophet named Abraham came and got them. He said that God called them the chosen ones. He led them to Canaan. There, there was a great famine. Moses, led them to Egypt. There, they became slaves for the pharaoh. Moses then rescued all the Israelites (The people), and led them across the Red Sea, what you hear of when you hear Moses Parted the Red Sea.

Anyway..

Then the Israelites wandered back and I believe it was Moses went to go and get the 10 Commandments while the rest of the Israelites worshiped a golden calf and were forced by god to wander the desert for 40 days.

Anyway,

Hanukkah - Jews were in a temple (I think it was while they were in Egypt/Maybe Jerusalem) and I think for some reason they were trapped in there. So they were trapped in there with a candle and enough oil to burn for 1 day. But it burned for 8 days! It's a miracle! (YES, HANUKKAH IS ONE OF THE MOST MINOR HOLIDAYS OF THE JEWISH CALENDAR.)

-That was written by me, I don't know much about Judaism, the history at least, so correct me when you find parts that are wrong or out of order.

Haha, great story. 8-) I can't tell you if anything's accurate or not, but sounded entertaining. Didn't know that hanukkah is a minor holiday though. What other holidays do jews celebrate usually?

Edit- Sorry, thought you said "candie". I'm a bit tired...

Rosh Hoshanah (New Years Day; Early September. Also starts the High Holidays)

Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement; Fast for 24 Hours, Sundown to Sundown. September; High Holidays)

Simcha Torah (Celebrating the Torah, September)

Sukkot (Don't know much about why we celebrate it)

Passover (Moses parting the Red Sea. Lots of food , Matzo Ball Soup FTW)

That's a good explanation,

And bball, we actually got on for celebrating Hanukkah. Hanukkah started last night, and someone in the congregation earlier in the day called the local news channel to come and watch us show off our new menorah and light it and sing songs to begin the Hanukkah holiday.
