why can friends be such jerks?

Oh, how I know how you feel.

My situation doesn't sound quite as bad as yours, but it certainly was rough, and my friends abandoned me. They knew what I was going through, and yet still they drifted away from me. It just goes to show friends that you can have a good time with at the weekends and friends you can rely on are a completely different thing.

Luckily I have a very supportive and strong family so we pulled through, and enough other close friends to get me through. I heard something which I believe to be very true during that time: "It's times like [this situation] when you realise who your friends are."

I certainly won't rely or count on any of those people ever again. Because I certainly don't need them. I've lost some good friends to drugs and social trends. True friends are a rare gift.

I can tell you from personal experience that you only ever find out who your true friends are in the hard times, when things are going badly.

Its a harsh lesson in life and one that I think you're now learning too.

He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart,

and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God.

Honestly, I cried IRL after reading that. I understand (I can't say I can relate very much, because I haven't gone through anything that bad) what you're going through, and I've sadly learned that some of my best "friends" have become just like yours have :( as you can see, though, you can talk to nearly anyone here, including me, about anything, and we'll listen.

Dang, that rough. I wish I could say I knew what you were going through, but I don't, at least not at that intensity. The only thing I can say is nothing is ever as bad as it seems. Cliche I know, but I find remembering this makes life a little more tolerable. And those friends who act liek jerks, well thats highschool for ya. Peer pressure makes people act differently, even if it is for stupid reasons. More likely than not, someone would like to help you but society frowns on helping outcast, which in this case you happen to be. Being an outcast is a painful thing, just don't let it get to you.

About the part of laughing at jokes that aren't even funny, there is a kid that started to hang out with my group of friends, and does that. He dressed in new clothes, listened to new music, all to hang out with some kids that aren't even really that popular. His whole attitude has changed.

Anyway, reading this made me feel really sad. Your one of the most respected people here, and it really sucks to see you go through what you do. I hope everything gets better for you Terley.

Hearing all this just makes me feel more detached from the "real world" :|. I don't want you all to hate me, but this is why:

Currently I'm at a Catholic Jesuit All-Boys High school. I don't know if it's the Christian feeling there, or the fact that there are no girls for guys to look tough around and get distracted by, but everyone here is basically perfect. Nearly everyone gets at least straight B's, most almost all A's. Nearly everyone plays multiple sports at the school, and is very active together in different clubs, and like a quarter of the class tutors. There are no "clicks", no groups, the "jocks" and "nerds" are at the exact same level, and many are good friends. Everyone is just really friendly, it's like the only ones who would get picked on are the ones who are mean to others.

Also, I've got a pretty different haircut (connecting to the people here who have had comments about their hair), honestly it looks pretty bad some days, and I've only had one person in three years sincerely tell me to cut it. [Long story short my barber messed up and my hair is short lol, but I don't mind now]. I've also got a solid family with basically no problems at all, two dogs, good income, etc. I'm in this little bubble, seperated from the harshness of the real world. Man is the real world going to hit me hard.

So, I sympathize with you guys, but I can't empathize. I mean I can say, "good luck, hope things get better", but I just don't understand the situation, so it'd be wrong of me to say, "I know what you're going through, it'll be OK."

But as Bloodred said, I'm praying for you guys.

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.
