Modern architecture OR Old style architecture

Featured Replies

Hello, I was just wondering what kind of architecture/interior design that you guys like more (old architecture/interior design can be from any past time period)...i personally prefer old styles of architecture and interior design largely over modern architecture, but i also like log homes/cabins as well. I like Gothic, Baroque, renaissance, moorish, and victorian styles of old architecture. I just don't like modern architecture because its pretty much all plane jane concrete...it looks like your in a maximum security prison not a house :P

So, whats your opinion? alcatraz or old architecture? :D

( guys don't have to comment on interior design, although i had enough courage to :o )

I like Postmodern. Things inspired by the Lever House or Seagram Building. But not just boring glass boxes. But I do like some glass boxes, usually I like them to be more than just a box. I don't like postmodern buildings that have like a million different angles on them though. Buildings like the New Bank of America building and Freedom Tower in New York City don't really appeal to me.

For interior, I like modern, it can be cold or cozy, either way I enjoy modern/economical styles. Economy- Less is more, I agree with that to a point.

It really does depend on the building and designer. Some modern buildings can look stunning, others look awful. Some old buildings look like they're about to fall down, others are beautiful.

Generally though, I think I prefer newer architecture, although not necessarily ultra-modern.

Sometimes a combination works well, like a property company in Yorkshire which is developing an old Bradford Mill into modern city centre flats, but still using some of the old features of the mill.

I like old Victorian style architecture.

I'm a fan of the older styles... Postmodern just doen't catch me. It looks like a little kid built it out of legos. Plus most of the buildings curves way too much, like this one for example.

For big buildings (not nesscarly tall,) I perfer some of the older styles,

and a bit of Gothic.

Not all. Some don't curve at all, like:

I love new design. I've always disliked anything made out of wood. Warm colors, your browns, your oranges, your yellows - never liked em. I like cool colors. My ideal look is cool colors like blue, purple, green, etc with metallic or glass with blacks and whites. I know it's kind of cold, but I like that sterile look. I really wish I knew design names better so I could further describe things, but I just really dislike most older buildings. It could just be their age and the fact that I like shiny/clean, and not their architecture that I don't like, but overall I prefer the look of Seattle

over buildings like these:

Well, I definitely appreciate both types. I love the futuristic aspect of the new age homes, but I also love the old fashioned look.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

I really wish I knew design names better so I could further describe things

Most steal boxes that are newer and more glass like structures are referred to as postmodern banal glass boxes. Previous box like buildings built earlier, around the 50's and 60's and early 70's, and have stronger horizontal movement and are more than just glass, are referred to as modernistic [banal steal boxes].

Postmodern is also used to describe any new glass building that is almost any shape.

I don't mind all of modern architecture...as long as it isn't in the box n' concrete style, but what i really don't like is when in europe when they take like an old beautiful baroque palace and turn it into modern interior design...it just doesn't seem right

The architecture of the Belgian Art Nouveau artist Victor Horta *drool*. If only I had lots of shiny euro's...

I agree, I don't like it when they add on to an old building using modern or postmodern style. But it must cost too much or they find it wrong to copy the original architecture. Which I could see why it would be wrong, considering it isn't the original architecture, and shouldn't be regarded as if it is.

most modern is easier on the eyes. and all the older styles stress brown pretty often, that, too, hurts the eyes...

I love this type of architecture in Dubai (some being concepts):

There are also amazing pictures of the interior of a hotel there but I can't find them right now - if anyone knows that link let me know.

Have we had a Dubai thread yet? We really need one. That place is insane. :P

I think I prefer modern over older buildings. However both have some amazing buildings from their styles.

I'm not too sure actually.

There are some buildings where you have to ask "what the hell were they thinking?" and others are just "awe".

I like medievil architecture and gothic (the more evil looking the better  ). I also like the effect of copper tarnishing in CO2 to form that cyan colour copper (II) carbonate (CuCO3, chem nerd FTW). I'll see if I can dig up some pictures later. I also like all the modern buildings going on around the world today, incredible stuff.
