Ram

Hey guys, with my income check hitting 1k this year, I wanted to by a endgame computer system! (finally, after all these years! its over!!!! :P )

Todays top notch games, I can only play on extreemly low details settings, even the smallest detail change to a higher setting will cause my computers proccesser to overheat and make my computer screen go black. I already over clocked it by 20% just to even RUN the games, but I have had this computer for over 2 years so I believe this new one i'm getting is gonna be "all" good! woo!

Here is my old specs.

amd 1800 ghz

5200 FX (upgraded to 7600 GT but no real effect on performance due 2 proccesor)

Ram 512

So yeah, a very very lame computer. Here's the new computer i'm getting.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz Dual

Western Digital 250GB SATA2, 7200rpm, 8MB cache

256MB GeForce 7900 GT DDR PCI Express, TV Out & DVI

1GB PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 RAM 240-pin DIMM

So here's my question. I am hearing that my computer system is good but could "use some more Ram".

Now I'm actually DOUBLING the ram I use to have in my comp and I could play at a decent FPS on my games now. I'm assuming they are joking when they say I need 2 GB? They better be! :x

I was trying to do some research on the importance on performance on a PC, but it seems like most are outdated from 7 years ago :-k

I'll be playing games like Guild Wars, Supreme Commander, and Battlefield 4142.

From other "reviews" on the graphics card, some say they can play battlefield on med-high settings, while others claim they can play on max settings. I'm assuming this is because people are not accounting in for their Ram type and proccesor speeds.

I know when I got the 7600 GT, I was expecting major graphical improvements, but na, I learned the hard way. :(

But, better to learn, than to make another fool hardy mistake!

So basically here is the list of the "new" upgrades i'll be getting.

1. A Motherboard with SLI Capability. So instead of getting a new expensive graphics card, I can just SLI the 7900 GT when they get cheaper!

2. I don't know how much Ram I can hold, but i'm sure its 4GB+ which 2 is enough anyways.

3. I will now be using PCI-Express over AGP.

4. I'll be using a Sata Hard drive instead of the other type, ATA i think.

5. I'll be getting a better graphics card.

6. I'll be getting a REALLY better proccessor! =D>

So, how "important" is Ram? I'm told to get 2 GB, but I seriously just can't pay for another Gig. Will I be fine with the current 1 GB? Its double of what I was using!

1. SLis will not give you a massive performance boost unless you are using very high resolutions ie. on a 22" or bigger monitor or TV

2.The max ram most MoBo can cope with is 8gb. (Windows XP doesnt like more ram then 2gb anyway.)

3. I competely agree with you. APG should never be choosen over PCI-Express.

4. SATA means the HDD is easier to install with a increase in preformance. Yes its better then ATA, which your old pc would more then likely be using.

5. The 7600GT would be fine with most modern games on moderate settings, and I would wait for the DX10 to drop in price before buying another.

6. That processor is a lot better, but you dont need to be told that  .

Tomshardware did a test to find out the best amount of ram which show 1.5gb of ram gave best performance for the money.

1gb is fine for nearly all modern games on meduim to high settings.

1gb is fine for most of today's games, although more and more game are requiring 1.5gb-2gb to run on high detail.

If you have the cash get 2gb, if not get 1 ram stick of 1gb and you can add another one later.

If you can also afford to get a $300 graphics card, the 8800GTS 320mb would be able to run almost every game on high, and is more future proof because it's running DX10.

There is never a good time to be buying hardware, but if the next batch of midrange DX10 cards come out (8600?) and are better perming than the 7900, you will be feeling pretty sorry for yourself.

The demands of Vista also make a 2x 1GB Dual channel memory system highly desirable. On a board with 4 memory slots, 2x 512MB now and another pair later is an alternative. Running a single 1GB in a dual channel sytem will result in single channel operation, with lower memory performance, and possible problems in getting a good enough matcgh for a dual channel pair later.

I suggest that you get 2GB of RAM. It really helps. I have 2GB, and wish that I could have more.

For games like BF2142, RAM is EVERYTHING. Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but those games LOVE 2gb. I'm assuming SupCom does aswell.

Personally, I wouldn't dish out the money for a 7900 when you have a 7600. You won't see enough improvement to warrant the cost. As someone said, if you could afford it I'd say go right on up to a 8800 GTS-320MB (or 640MB if you're feeling particularly spendy).

But if you don't want that, 2GB of RAM with a 7600gt would probably be nice than 1GB and 7900GT for many games. And if you plan on going to Vista and playing anything at all, 2GB is pretty much what you need. 4 is nice too :).

Obviously SATA and PCI-E are the best, there's pretty well no argument there.

I don't agree with that. I think that nowadays the GPU makes all the difference.
