Because Scotland are in group 9 they play two less games then if they where in another group. The top team from each group goes through and the 8 best second placed teams also go through, so becuase Scotland have less games, they pick up less points.

Less games, more time to prepare, less fatigue.

"Only the team finishing top automatically qualify for the finals, with the best eight runners-up facing play-offs for the remaining four places.

While the results against the team finishing bottom will not count in the other groups, all those in Scotland's group will as Group 9 does not contain a sixth seed. "

So as I read that (it's pretty difficult to understand). Assuming Scotland finish 2nd we will have the same number of games counted as the 2nd place teams in the other groups. The other groups 2nd placed teams don't include the games against the lowest placed teams in their groups.

edit - The 8 best placed 2nd position teams will go to a play off. 4 from that playoff will reach the finals.

So, it's pretty much England, Andorra and the Soviet Union

Maybe the England team should invest in a Geiger Counter to check their food when they're traveling then :) .

I know that was in bad taste but I couldn't resist

Cant see Scotland getting anywhere in there group though[/

Lol,I think they stand a great chance tbh,to think they were close to qualifying with france and italy in their group,im hoping norway and holland won't be too hard.

As for us, not too bad, could've been worse. Holland aren't easy but we beat them a while back (even with Bertie Vogts in charge which is a miracle)
Before losing 6 - 0 in the return leg if my memory serves me correctly

I think only Wales have an impossible group in this draw though.

I'm glad we got the smallest group.... fewer games to play yay! It's a tough group though. It's been two decades since we last beat Norway, and the last time we played Holland, they beat us 6-0 lol.

Thats true, to my shame I couldn't remember the precise number we were beaten by so I left it out to avoid posting the wrong score, well that and the fact that I was still trying to repress that game from my memory.

Meh, nub hollanders and scots, they should not underestimate norway :P

But done with euro qual and world cup draw...

Interesting to see plans for a Celtic cup type thing for Scotland, Wales, N Ire and Ireland. 2009 will be the year. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 114148.stm

Gives me something else to watch and might provide some opportunities for a cheeky wee trip to Ireland every so often for a booze up.

He should of waited for another club, Birminham are in turmoil at the moment.

I don't know why he left really. He would be supported much more by the Scottish fans that the Birmenham fans. And apparently the SFA were going to double his wages, I know Birmingham were supposedly going to triple what he is getting now, but i think the 50% less he would be getting at Scotland comes with a hell of a lot more job security. They way the EPL is at the moment, along with Birmingham, I would be surprised if he was still there at the end of the season.

Also I can't believe Billy Davies has been sacked for overachieving. That being said, even though people are saying they are 'doing a Watford' by building for next year in the Championship, I reckon that Watford had a stronger squad, worked harder, played better and were in an all round better position this time last year. Still an out of order sacking if you ask me.

Yeah I'm quite sad that McLeish has left. Though he's always wanted to get a job in the EPL. I would have thought he would've waited for a better team to come along though.

Billy Davies is now one of the front runners in getting the Scotland job. Not sure on who I want to take over at the moment.

sig2ho7.jpg
Alex McLeish has quit Scotland.

Can you take George Burley off of us?......please?

Disappointed with that, but can you blame him. He won't have a competitive match to manage for nine months. Maybe he's figured he'll quit while he's ahead lol.

Don't want to sound too cocky, but I expect either Celtic or Rangers to win that cup most years.. assuming they take it seriously (since our fixture lists is already pretty full)

I think its an international tournament between us, both bits of Ireland and Wales not a club thing.

Anyway I'm disappointed at McLeish leaving the Scotland job for such a mediocre team. I'd understand him leaving for a decently well established EPL team but Birmingham are going down unless Carson Jung completes his takeover soon and starts pumping some money in for the January transfer window.

As for his successor I'm not too sure who I want. Unless we look abroad (which is unlikely considering what happened last time we did) we only have 3 options;

One is Gary McAllister who interviewed well last time around when McLeish got the job but has little management experience at any level and none at international.

Second we have Billy Davies who did well to get Derby into the Premier League then didn't get enough cash to spend when they got there but is solid.

Thirdly we have Souness. Good player but a shocking manager with a history of going to clubs spending a fortune and doing badly. If he gets the job I'll take a nosedive off the Forth Road Bridge.

I can't see who else can/will be in the frame.

The one thing Davies, Souness and McAllister (based purely on his lack of experience, so more of an educated guess) all have in common is tactical ineptitude. A Scottish manager barely needs to do anything to get the most out of the team, given from the passion shown for every match. What a Scot needs would be tactical knowledge and perhaps the impartialness to take a step back and re-assess things.

For that reason, two people (I think) who would be a dream manager for Scotland would be one of the free Italians right now, Lippi or, better, Capello. Not too sure how that would go down with the Scots here and in general, I'd obviously assume reservations over nationality and price. But if those can be overcome, you'd be looking at the World Cup Finals, for sure.

For a Scottish manager, I'd plump for McAllister. His lack of experience doesn't necessarily mean failure, eg. Klinsmann and Van Basten and I think he's the closest thing to the aforementioned description given. Plus, he'd champion the best 'style' of football out of the two and, let's face it, I don't see a big target man number. 9 for Scotland breaking through any time soon.

I agree with you on Davies, Souness & McAllister aren't tactically brilliant unfortunately I think those are our only options because despite our recent good form, the job still has a limited appeal (aside from patriotism) because of the lack of cash involved and the fact that we aren't a big footballing nation.

Capello or Lippi would be dream managers and would go down well in my opinion because they bring such high reputations but I really can't see either as a Scotland manager anytime soon.

The situation is worrying because at the moment the job is being seen as a stepping stone for managers who are looking to get back into club management.

I can't believe arsenal lost 3-1 like that. Senderos is such a Fr000b! Anyway, i think Man U were quite lucky and that was a great free kick by Ronaldo

Anyone else read about todays football corruption arrests?

They arrested Harry Redknapp (Portsmouth manager), Peter Storrie (Portsmouth Chief Excecutice), Amdy Faye (Rangers player and former Portsmouth player) and reportedly Willie McKay (Scottish Agent) and Milan Mandaric (former Portsmouth Chairman & current Leicester City Chairman).

Seems like something funny was going on at Portsmouth when they either bought/sold Amdy Faye (I read somewhere that it has to do with Faye's transfer from Portsmouth to Newcastle in 2005). I guess this rules Redknapp out of the running for the England job (if he was a contender in the first place).

best news today :D

I'm delighted with the result between Celtic and Shaktar Donestk on Wednesday :) My throat is still sore from shouting and singing lol.

We just need a point to guarantee qualification (and maybe not even that depending on other results).

Great result for Liverpool too, and an awesome comeback by Tottenham. Chelsea were amazing to watch against Rosenborg. Disappointed by Arsenal though.... I don't think they showed that team enough respect and deserved to lose.

i use to go for chelsea, but there weak this year. Aresenal and ManU all the way(don't call me a fa lover)
