The Besiktas 'keeper and centre-back had clearly been bribed. No wonder Benitez still didn't look happy as they had made it way too bloody obvious.

Nah, I bet he was just kicking himself for not starting Crouch more often.

I genuinelly believe he told Crouch: "Look, you're 6ft 8 and you can't head the ball. Go away for a month, go learn how to head, and maybe I'll let you play again".

It really seems that way, because he's actually heading now with conviction. Only 2 months ago, he would have sent that headed goal of his sky high or straight to the keeper's mits.

Crouch is the most underrated player in the history of football, hasn't he got the record for most england goals in a year? His record is brilliant for England, its a pity we have lazy players like Berbs at spurs, i wouldn't mind crouch in if we shipped off a few strikers!

Well up for the game tomorrow. Everywhere here is in football mode, it's pretty funny.

C'mon the Scotland.

So this is why I don't care about international football apart from in the world cup...

miricles can happen,as long as we don't play like we did against georgia..

We will have a slight chance in this match only because it is at home. The crowd is our 12th man.

Even if we lose I'm still going to be very drunk tomorrow I think.

I don't care how badly we play, I don't even care if we need to cheat to win today. The result is the only thing that matters.

Best of luck to the Scots ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ã

Turns out it was the Italians that needed to cheat to beat us. I can't believe the ref' gave them that free kick. If anything it should've been given to us.

Ah well, it was the group of death anyway. 24 points is enough to get most other teams qualifiation in their own groups... but it wasn't enough in ours.

Look on the bright side... at least our seeding has been dramatically increased meaning we'll be drawn against easier teams for the 2010 world cup.

ive heard so many Scotland fans blaming the referee, seems familier.

We're upset with a legitimately poor decision but there's been nothing extreme like what happened to Urs Meier (who made the right decision - Terry impeded Ricardo).

In short, there is no comparison to be made here.

But if the ref had had a perfect game, Italy would have been two up within half an hour and Scotland's goal would not have stood.

Yer, that's harsh comparison... Gonzales (the one who managed the Scotland game), hasn't received any death threats. Nor do Scotland fans have a history of violence (unlike the fans mentioned in that article)

The above poster is quite correct though, we'd have been 2-0 down and our own goal would've been disallowed had the ref' got everything else correct. However, Scotland would've been awarded a penalty before the offside goal for a deliberate handball on a goalbound shot, which would've levelled the game at that point.

It's all "ifs" and "buts". Regardless... we're out and that's it finished. We were beaten by the world champions... there's no shame in that. We gave them a game and they know it.

Fair enough, but I still don't see any logical comparison with what happened here and what happened to Urs Meier.

No death threats, no comparison.

British teams and many continental teams are always first to blame the referees, then look at their own failings. Champion South American nations are the opposite. Who's won most World Cups?

Same for rugby. Australia were on the receiving end of some extremely contentious decisions versus England and, evidentally, lost. New Zealand went straight to the ref's mistake rather than their own administrative failings. South Africa conducted themselves professionaly throughout, whereas England (in this World Cup) did not, with inner squabling, public outbursts and, in the final, blaming of the video ref; despite the correct call being made.

Name me the teams who've won the World Cup more than once, please.

It's the same with all sports throughout history - you know the true quality of the team by the way they take defeat. The only exception here is the Italy 06 squad and their league that year - due to them paying the referees in the first place! :P

Geez, Croatia just went a goal up against England. Flukiest goal ever.... poor Carson will be murdered by the press if England go out :(
