The Ultimate Giant Mole Hunting Guide v1.12

-by Dingse Danni

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[hide=Intro]The Giant Mole is a lvl 230 monster residing beneath the Falador park. It has got 200 hp and it attacks with melee with a maximum damage of 21.

The whole tunnel system is multi-combat, therefore making it a fun place to go with your mates or your clan.

When it gets to half health or below it might burrow it self and end up somewhere else in the cave systems. It is your job to hunt it down to get its loot.

It is mainly killed for its skins and claws which can be traded with Wyson the gardener for birds nests or simply sold for pure cash to other players.

To get into the mole tunnels you will have to dig at one of the mounds in Falador park.

This guide will show how you can kill it in a group as well as how you can solo it.[/hide]

[hide=Reason for this guide]For a long time i have enjoyed hunting the giant mole beneath Falador.

I find the hunt both fun and profitable. Not many people agree with me on either of my reasons for hunting down the mole.

I personally believe that the reason people disagree is because they don't know better.

I have been looking around the net for a good mole hunting guide... and I havent found any!

Maybe it is just I who don't look good enough... but when the 2 top rs fan sites Tip.it and RuneHQ only provide a small guide with no really good ways of killing it I believe there is a serious need for a good guide!

The reason there is no really good guide might be that people dont believe the mole is a good money-maker or fun to hunt down.

Read on and i will explain how it can be a money-maker as well as a fun hunt...[/hide]

[hide=Money-making by killing Giant mole]When i tell people that the mole can earn you quite a lot of money, they ALWAYS tell me that because they dont drop any high-price item they are a very bad money-maker.

THAT IS NOT TRUE!!!

When fighting the mole the drops you should focus on is mostly the mole skins and mole claws.

Mole skins/mole claws = 5k+ ea

The main drop skins/claws are a 100% drop. The mole drops 2-4 of them each time it dies.

That makes a profit of 10-20k a kill just for the 100% drop!!!

On top of that the mole also drops other good stuff like noted yew logs, noted silver ores, noted iron ores, runes and rune armour. It also drop dragon med helm and dragon spear more often than most monsters.

I did an hour of soloing it with the ideal (in my opinion) setup.

I made a profit of:

217225 gp

12 green charms

8 crimson charms

2 blue charms

I didn't even get any good drops like noted yew logs (which it drops rather often) and I had some problems making me hop worlds twice during that time!

Having something to compare with i tried an hour of ranging Blue Dragons which is a very popular way of earning gps.

I made a profit of:

258003 gp

13 green charms

5 crimson charms

1 blue charm

At the Blue Dragons i didn't have any problems at all. That counts a bit up too. But it still looks like a better profit... BUT IT WASN'T!!!

I used my crystal bow against the Dragons and used up more than 3 charges on it. Even when the recharge cost is only at 180k you still use up more than 54k during an hour of killing Blue Dragons.

That makes the profit 204k/hour. That isn't even as much as the mole!!!

Well I think that shows that hunting the Mole can be a fair amount of gps... but only if you hunt it down properly...

So keep reading and you might find a way making mole hunting both fun and rewarding...[/hide]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[hide=Items to bring at all time]Light source - You will be constantly attacked by bugs if you don't have a light with you! A bullseye lantern is advised since it can't extinguish it self. If you bring other light sources make sure to bring a tinderbox too!

Spade - You will need a spade to dig on the mounds taking you to the tunnel system.[/hide]

[hide=Prayer restoring]In this guide i don't put prayer pots in most of the suggested inventories. The only inventories i have put them in are the ones where prayer is a must. And even there they are only used as an emergency.

Instead of using potions to restore your prayer i suggest that you recharge it in your house!

By using a house teleport tab, recharging your prayer at your altar and using the Falador portal (Which i recommend you build close to your altar), you will be back in Falador almost immediately after. And it will make it possible for you to bank too :)

If you don't have a Falador portal in your house (I strongly recommend having one), you can bring Falador teleport tabs instead.

Finally if you don't have an altar in your house you should use a Lumbridge teleport tab, recharge your prayer at the church and then use a Falador teleport tab.

You will loose much more money on using prayer pots, making it a less efficient way of making money.[/hide]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Goal:

There are 2 things to focus on when fighting the giant mole:

1. Killing it fast, the best is if you can kill it before it digs away!

2. Hunt it down fast if it manages to dig away before you kill it!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Killing the mole fast (Builds/Inventories)

There are a ton of different ways to kill the Giant Mole and I will list them here and explain how they work and what kind of players that should use them. Don't worry about the names I give the different setups(builds)... It is just easier to explain when the setups got names of their own.

[hide=Melee Builds]1. The Bandos Berserker

This is definitely the best build in my opinion.

The big idea in this build is the that you wear Bandos Plate*, Verac's Skirt** and a BGS.

You will take advantage of the special attack that lowers the moles defence by the damage inflicted. If you don't miss the special you will most likely pwn the hell out of it.

You will also take advantage of the armour bonus and the Piety prayer. It will make it possible to kill it without protection from melee!

If going with a group it would be good with 2 BBs or at least 2 persons with a BGS, because your special bar will not even be close to full when the mole respawns.

This build is mainly good for high lvls (110+) since you will need high defence and at least 70 prayer to make it work.

bbarmoursetup52inv39invcg5.png

2. The Armadyl Bandos Hybrid

This build is only really good if you go in a team of 3 or more.

You will wear Bandos Plate* and Verac's Skirt** together with a AGS.

Instead of using your special in the beginning of the fight you should wait until the mole is at half health before you release the specials. That way you have a big chance of finishing it off before it digs.

Like in the BB build you should use piety and monks instead of protect from melee.

If there is already 2 BBs on the team this build is the best to choose no mater how many other players on the team uses it...

This is like the BB build made mostly for high levels (110+) since you need high defence and at least 70 pray to make it work really good.

abharmoursetup52inv39inaw2.png

*In both of the above builds you can switch the bandos plate to a plate with high defence bonuses. This will be cheaper but won't give you the strength and small prayer bonus.

**In both of the above builds you can switch the Verac's Skirt to Bandos Tassets. It will give you a little strength boost but on the other hand it will give you a smaller prayer bonus which will make you bank more often. It will mainly be good for players who have very high prayer and prayer bonus from other gear (like trimmed cape of achievement).

3. The Bandos Templar

This build is made up of a BGS and proselyte or initiate armour (depending on what quests you have done).

Unlike in the 2 previous builds you will have to use protect from melee. This build is good if you don't have the money for the Bandos armour, have very low defence or can't use the piety prayer. However i still recommend using at least the incredible reflexes prayer because the attack bonus does a very big difference.

btarmoursetup52inv39invaf8.png

4. The Armadyl Templar

This build will not fit many people. It is made of a AGS and proselyte or initiate armour. In this build you will have to use protect from melee like in the previous build.

This build is good if you don't have the money for the Bandos armour, have very low defence or can't use the piety prayer. However I still recommend using at least the incredible reflexes prayer because the attack bonus does a very big difference.

atarmoursetup52inv39invfh5.png

5. The Dharok'er

This is a classic build that most players might have heard about. It will take advantage of the Dharok armour's special effect. The less hp you have left the higher damage you will be able to deal.

You will start out attacking it with a dds using up your specials. Afterwards you will put on the great axe and let the mole deal you damage. As soon as you get below 21 hp put on protection from melee or if you are there with a team run a few squares away so that your mates will be attacked by the mole instead of you after that you will be free to hit your high hits on it.

This build is good if you don't have the money or level to use a BGS, if are soloing at a low level or in a bigger team where someone else is willing to tank when you are low on hp.

I used it a lot myself when i was around level 90 combat and had a good experience with it except the prayer bonus. I had a feeling my prayer ran out too fast. But that will only be a problem for players who solo the mole.

dharmoursetup52inv39invho1.png

6. The Verac'er

This build takes advantage of the Verac special effect that makes you hit extremely accurate. You will start out by using your dds specials and then switch to Verac's flail and finish it off.

An alternate way of using this build is bringing a dragon mace. Instead of starting out using up your specials you will wait till the mole is around half hp before you try your luck. You can hit some surprisingly high hits and sometimes even kill it before it digs.

With this build you will have to use protect from melee at all time because it is only recommended for people with rather low level :)

It can work pretty well from around 70 attack to 75-80 attack. After 80 attack the Verac effect can't really compare with other builds.

varmoursetup52inv39invqb3.png

7. The Old school Whip and Prayer

This is a very simple build. You will be using a whip, a rune defender as well as all the prayer boosting armour you can get your hands on (preferably proselyte armour). You will start out using DDS specials on it and then finishing it off with your whip.

You can also use dragon mace like i suggest in the Verac build.

This build is mostly used by player who haven't got the money for a BGS or the money for full Dharok's.

All in all it works fine but the hits aren't really high and that is a problem because the mole digs just after a hit. Therefore hitting high will make it dig less.

wharmoursetup52inv39invvo8.png[/hide]

[hide=Ranged Builds]When ranging the mole it will be clever to kill it with the help from a tanker unless you use protection from melee all the time :)

You can also just bring food but be aware that you will use quit a bit :P

There is also the option to use one of the many safespots in the cave. A good one is the one just next to the summoning obelisk. However when using a safespot your familiar won't attack the mole automatically, making it harder to find the mole when digging (read the part: hunting down the mole when it digs away)

Using accurate style instead of rapid will make you hit better and because the mole digs just after an attack you will be better off with some slower but higher hits.

After some work with ranging i have figured out the best way (in my opinin) to range the mole

1. The Void Crossbow'er

This build is made up of full Void knight armour with a void ranger helmet*. It will give you a 10% boost in both the accuracy and the damage you inflict.

You will also be using a rune crossbow together with enchanted diamond bolts.

If your ranged level isn't very high you can use enchanted ruby bolts. however using enchanted ruby bolts will make you use more food.

A good idea is to bring a Dorgeshuun crossbow and some bonebolts for the special attack. If you use it as the first attack you will have a very high chance of hitting. The special works like the BGS special and lowers the defence by damage inflicted.

Another way of using your special bar is to bring a Dark Bow and some good arrows. However i recommend using the Dorgeshuun Crossbow.

It is also recommended to use the prayer eagle eye since it will make you hit alot better.

This build is good for medium level players or players with a low attack.

The reason it is good for the medium leveled players is that ranged is a very accurate combat skill making it easier to hit the mole.

vcarmoursetup52inv39invwp6.png

2. The Void Crystal ranger

This build works like the VC except you will be using a Crystal bow instead. It is a very accurate bow and it hits rather high too.

I recommend using crystal bow if you are high lvled ranger (90+) because at that lvl the special effect that diamond bolts give you can't really compare to the crystal bow.

vcrarmoursetup52inv39inpp9.png

*If you don't have the void armour you can use armadyl, karils or dragonhide armour too. Void will just be better than those.[/hide]

[hide=Magic Builds]The mole has got extremely high magic defence so at this state of time there isn't really a mage build that will work well against it... at least none I am aware of![/hide]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Hunting down the mole when it digs away

In this part of the fight lvl 52 summoning is a huge advantage!

What is really important is to always have run put on... It makes a little problem with all that heavy armour you should wear but I have figured 4 ways to solve that out.

The 2 ways that require summoning can only be done if you have a fair agility level too, because the energy restored are based on the agility level of the user.

[hide=For 52+ summoners]At 52 summoning you will be able to summon the familiar Spirit Terrorbird which is in my opinion one of the most useful familiars!

It has got 3 abilities making it perfect for mole hunting:

1. The scrolls fit for it are called tireless run. They recharge your run energy which is a must when hunting down the mole while wearing your heavy armour. They are, like all other scrolls, stackable. They restore more energy than a dose of super energy restore potion. And they are even cheaper to use than super energy restore pots! See my point?

2. They will store up to 12 of your drops which will make it possible to bank less.

3. The last thing they can do isn't an unique thing for them but works with all familiars (except Bunyup and Unicorn Stallion). When fighting the mole and the familiar fights it too, the familiar will automatically try to attack the mole after it digs. Therefore the familiar will start walk in the direction the mole is! It is not always 100% perfect. I have even tried that it was the totally wrong way it went, but it works like 9 out of 10 times or more, so it makes the hunt so much faster![/hide]

[hide=For 40-51 summoners]At 40 summoning you will be able to summon the familiar Bull Ant. The Bull Ant is a less powerful version of the Spirit Terrorbird. Still it have the same 3 abilities making it ideal if you havent got the level for Spirit Terrorbird.

1. The scrolls called unburden will restore your run energy like the tireless run scrolls... They just don't restore nearly as much energy but they still work.

2. They will store up to 9 of your drops which will make it possible to bank less. The extra 3 spots that the Spirit Terrorbird will give arent really that important... You will be able to bank rather often anyway.

3. This works just as the Spirit Terrorbirds 3rd ability.[/hide]

[hide=For 39- summoners]If you arent lvl 40 summoning you will have to restore your run energy in other ways. There are 2 ways to do so.

1. The classic choice is super energy restore potions or even normal energy restore potions. Normal energy restores are alot cheaper however they take up more inventory space... The biggest problem with these is that they take up inventory space. But by preparing right it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

2. The last way to recharge your run energy is by using purple sweets. I really don't recommend this! Purple sweets cost around 2k ea and don't restore much! The only bonus is that they are stackable and heal you a little too...

This method is only good for players who have too much money really :P

If you are really rich and just want to enjoy mole hunting for the hunt and not for the drops you can do it...

The last thing that i recommend for people without level 40 summoning is to bring another familiar anyway doesn't really matter which one you bring... since it is a low lvl familiar it won't hurt the mole much anyway.

The reason i recommend bringing a familiar no matter how low level it is is that it can tell you what direction the mole went...

More info about that can be found in the 3rd ability of the Spirit Terrorbird under 52+ summoners info...[/hide]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Teaming

When going to the mole with a team there are 2 ways of chasing the mole. The better one depends on if you use LS or just share the skins between you afterwards.

I strongly recommend NOT using LS here unless you don't really trust the persons you hunt with.

If you don't use LS you will be able to split up and cover different parts of the mole system, making it possible to attack the mole almost constantly.

Using this tactic you should be at the same CC even though you don't use LS. It will make it possible to communicate with your team about where it is.

If you however decide to use LS anyway, you will have to run through the tunnels together with your team at all times because LS only works if your mates are close to the mole too when it dies.

So by using LS you will waste a lot of run energy and time chasing the mole around the tunnels.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a couple of new things that i will be adding to the guide when i get the time but untill then you can see them here... however you will have to come up with the best way of using those methods because i haven't tried them through really :P

[hide=Updates to come]1. Fast poisoning with emerald bolts (doesn't even have to damage mole before they work) good at low level.

2. D hally spec for KO after it gets bellow half hp. should be very accurate and hit high too...

3. Dwarven Canon Tecnique. Might be good at low lvl to do some high hits on the mole but it will however cost a bit...

4. Death prayer restoring/RoL if you have a respawn point in falador you can choose to let the mole kill you when you run out of prayer... don't do it if u wear barrows gear or have a bad gravestone though...

5. Gonna check out DFS and whip tanking... however i'm not 100% sure about this one...[/hide]

Even though i have plans about putting these things into the guide it might not happen anytime soon because i have been put into a busy time starting school... however if i get some spare time i might do it don't make it hold back your ideas :P

Kudos on the guide! Its nice to see updated Mole hunting techniques.

Personally, I have only solo'ed the Mole and I am finding it consistently harder to find an empty world. This brings up a suggestion I have for you. Consider mentioning something on World Selection. The way Runescape is growing means there will always be people who have never killed the Mole. More importantly there will be people who have not developed a seance of etiquette. It would be nice to see your views on interacting with other players in the Lair.

This is one of,if not, the best Mole Killing guides I have read. Keep up the good work and remember, the more wisdom you can share the better.

Hey Danni, I didn't know you made a guide :P .

I've done some serious mole killing before and have some suggestions:

First of all I don't think 20-30k per drop is worth teaming for on the mole unless you just want to have some fun with it. It is almost 100% necessary to solo the mole for it to be even close to worth the time.

I've used the Bgs for mole hunting, but not the Ags although I assume they're fairly similar... The Bgs is far too inaccurate with the special attack and it does not recharge quickly enough to be a viable, trustworthy way to lower the moles def.

Compared to Dh with low health the God Sword does not have the same consistently high hits. The issue with the mole isn't the attaining the greater accuracy of the Gs it is the K0 effect of the DH set. Almost every time you do hit with the Dh you will hit high, while when you do hit more often with the Gs it will not consistently be as high a hit and so you will spend more time running around for the mole.

It has been my experience that for high lvl soloing the Dh is far more effective than either of the Gs setups. You will drink a ppot, espically if you do not have a higher prayer lvl (which is highly suggested for this method to reduce cost) but every time you have to run after the mole you waste so much time.

I do thank you for writing the best mole guide I've seen and the amazing use of the spirit bird to track the mole has made it much easier.

But in the end I think mole hunting is more something done for fun, or for a quick fix on birds nest. It is fairly inconsistent and i cannot stress enough that it is pointless to do in a team as the drops are not worth it.

Thx for the feedback m8 :D

i totally agree with you about teaming not worth it unless u just do it for fun, but i still believe the aspects of teaming it are important in the guide :P next tmie im gonna do some changes i might make it clearer that you will earn alot less on teaming... and off course i know it isn't the fastest money, but it is still alot more than most people think :P

With the GS im not really sure if im agreeing with u though...

the first thing about ags and bgs i believe but i only tried out ags a couple of times because i sold it again cause i thought it wasnt good against many foes...

However i think that BGS might be good at a lower level because when u hit it u might pwn its *** :P but at a higher level ags might be better but well... dont really feel like buying it again to try it out more atm :P

The other thing about Dh being better than GS... well... it might be something about the level making the difference cause i get the most kills from using GS... the thing about Dh is that u wont damage it everytime u hit it... thats very inconvenient after it is below half health because it burries after each attack done to it :/ while GS might not hit just as high it still hit very high hits, especially AGS spec :P and you won't hit nearly as many 0s... at least i do hit alot of 0s at 96 attack with super pot and piety... most of the kills i get with GS it wil bury like 0-3 times... 3 times being max... so im not really sure if i agree there :P

but anyways tyvm for giving me this feedback ^^

Very nice guide. I find that familiars are very useful for pointing out where the mole is.

I've noticed something that MIGHT help. WHen the mole digs, if your familiar turns one way then starts to walk another, I find that often its the opposite direction. That happens when the mole has dug out of your current "map"(I belive there are 2 segments)

Also, if it looks like your familiar will attack the mole, call it back. Since the mole can dig at every attack, its not worth it attacking with your familiar.

Also, can you add the exp/hour here? Just wondering.

Nice guide, its about time I started mole killing on my current account.

Here's a few things you might want to note.

*Monk robes offer slightly less bonus but weight a lot less saving energy (If your low lvl its helps a lot).

*If your Dharoking you can put out your light for a second or two, let your health drop and light back up.

*The bullant sculls do the exact same as the terrorbirds

[hide=Drops]

  • Dragon Axe x11
    Berserker Ring x9
    Warrior Ring x8
    Seercull
    Dragon Med
Dragon Boots x4 - all less then 30 kc
    Godsword Shard (bandos)
    Granite Maul x 3

Solo only - doesn't include barrows[/hide][hide=Stats]

i like the monk robes idea :) will also be good for pures without defence... will for sure try out and update my guide at some state of time :D

thought about the thing with your light source, but there is the little problem that u cannot put ur light out anymore... you will have to bring a lightsource that is not covered so the mole will put it out for u... but i will check it out eventually...

the bull ant is also in the guide under the part about chasing the mole :) might find a way to make it more visible...

anyways thx for feedback

Oh I used to LOVE mole hunting back when I was a member. I never could make much money on it due to my lack of cash -- no godsword, no piety, no summoning. I did manage to make around 120k-ish per hour which is quite good.

Few things:

With 85 attack I found that solo dharoking just took forever as I hit too many 0s and the occasional 40s didn't really help that much. It meant I was forever chasing it round. In a team it is OK though.

You seem to have completely underestimated the veracs set. Using the stab attack I used to hit amazingly well -- great for soloing but the low hits didn't make it too great for teaming.

Sadly I can't say anything about the godsword methods as I could never try them although they look cool :D

i did like the verac set very much back in the days... tip.it refused to put it into their mole guide for some reason however, even though i told them that the accuracy was extremelly helpfull at semi-low to mid-high attack lvls... i put some levels in my guide where i suggest using it, but it is so long ago i used it myself so i can't really remember it perfectly...

however you are welcome if you can give some more clear views about what lvls it is good for...

Have you tried using a dark bow special for ranging? It's a guaranteed hit and it can do massive damage.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:
