An image-rating manual... sort of.

Recommended Posts

Well, since it seems (at least to me) that some people are having a hard time rating images, they oftentimes just say something like "nice. X/10". I don't really know whether I am among the minority who considers that as blatant spam, but I sincerely hope I'm not. There is nothing constructive, nor enlightening, whatsoever in the word "nice", and it seems like the person who replies with it, just say it to say it, if you know what I mean... just so they say something, in order to not letting people think that you're intentionally making a spam post... now that would just be awkward, am I right? - Because seriously, a person must be able to maintain his/her not-so-well-conducted-and-spammy-post-count, correct?

But then there's another type of person, the type who doesn't want to be like the one I just mentioned above, but wants to conduct a well-written and constructive rating, but they aren't sure how. Anyway, so I'm re-posting this sort of "form" we utilize at another forum. I thought it might be appropriate to post it here... but I don't know... I'm just sick of all the "one-sentence" replies, which has increased lately. So without further ado, you bringeth thee the:

Image-Rating Manual

Piece - The name of the graphic (if there is one).

Concept - X/10 - Discuss the overall concept and what you think it's trying to achieve.

Colours - X/10 - Discuss the colours used and how they effect the image. (i.e improvements that could be made etc.).

Effects - X/10 - Discuss the effects used and how they could be changed or what you like about them.

Text - X/10 - Discuss text if any was used and any improvements that could be made.

Cuts - X/10 - Discuss any PSD's or cuts included in the image

Here is an example:

QUOTE

Piece - Whirlwind

Concept - 9/10 - This image evokes the same connotations in my mind as the first one but I believe it's better executed.

Colours - 10/10 - These colours flawlessly blend with the concept and complements the effects.

Effects - 9/10 - I believe the render has achieved the right balance of dark and light.

Text - 6/10 - Probably the weakest aspect of this images as it doesn't seem to fit.

Feel free to add more options, when needed.

And here is the code to copy and paste for your convenience:

CODE

[b]Piece[/b] - [size=7]PIECE NAME[/size]

[b]Concept[/b] - 0/10 - comments.

[b]Colours[/b] - 0/10 - comments.

[b]Effects[/b] - 0/10 - comments.

[b]Text[/b] - 0/10 - comments.

[b]Cuts[/b] - 0/10 - comments.

I'm not sure if this is exactly sticky-material, but if you feel like it could be, with some minor-changes, then feel free to alter it beyond recognition. :)

That would be all. Thanks for reading.

I think this should, beyond a doubt, be made a sticky. Or at least something similar to this.

There are a number of people going around giving only numbers, which do not help the artist to improve what they are doing. Hopefully, when more people read this, there will be more constructive ratings/comments.

Well, I just had a chat with one of the mods, who don't think this should be made a sticky. And I don't plan to argue with that, so I will just keep bumping this instead. >_<

Thanks for the input, Demoris. :)

nice 10/10

lol good guide, i do see this, it could be annoying for the maker of the graphic because they dont say what is wrong with it so it can be improved. Maybe we should get loads of people wanting this to be a sticky then it may become one..

Sticky it!

Hacked, gaining none buy-able skills.

This would be a good way to stop the people spamming this forum, just giving numbers and not even knowing what they are rating.

On the other hand, it would be a hassle for an experienced person to write out each point of view.

So, its a moot point. Needs some refining. But a good idea to work from

If it isn't in your veins, you'll never know.

I agree with you there, usualy i don't do rating's unless i'm boored and feel like it :D still, this guide is preaty good :D although some people might still just spam what they think is each lol  and give a lame reason why.

Plus, i think it would be cool if you could add something else to it, that is rating it compared to what other signatures around are. Aka, how good is it compared to others, 10/10 being better :D or something like that. Because everyone know's that alot of time people getting rated are not only rated depending on how good the image is, but what their current lvl of ablity is, and it would be interested to see how they do (at least i think it would be nice) against the other leading sig's around the forums.

Just my idea anyways :D

Royal, well... I'm sure the person could narrow it down a bit, if he can't be arsed to point out every flaw and whatnots in the image...

Nadril, that's a good idea. But I'm not sure if it should be compared to others' work. Instead, I reckon it would be better if we compared it to the person in question's previous work. Because I doubt it would help him progress in any way, if we say "well, it ain't better that bla-blah's sigs, thus I give you a 4/10". Not the best example, but you get the message. :)

And as I said in my post, you don't have to follow the manual, point to point, you can add your own options, too. >_<

But if anyone has any other options in mind, that could make the manual better, post them. :)

Also, before anyone says this, I am not implying that I think everyone will start using the manual, that would be impossible. But if some people starts using it, perhaps more will catch up on that... - and I think this forum would get so better if that occured.

And, maybe, eventually the "one sentence"-spammers will belong to the minority (where they should).......... and everyone lived happily ever after...

Thanks for the comments. :)

I believe a simple number is just fine, but only if you give a logical explaination behind that rating.

Such as:

10/10. I really like the colors and point of view you took it from. The blending from item to another is just simply great. ect. ect......

So really yes it would stop such spammers as cell_snake who simply leaves a 10000000/10 rating because he hasn't got a grasp on the concept of a constructive response. So its all in the writer. As myself I give an overall rating and then give a very constructive response. I'll admit there are times when I don't explain myself as I should but sometimes its just better to leave some things left unsaid. Nice guide though, I believe that if this is made sticky and the mods can make newcomers to the forums think its a rule, then we should have no problem implementing this.

Teenage, yeah, that's what I meant. You can rate it, only if you back it with something constructive.

Thanks for the feedback.

Uh... I never asked you to rate my sig. And that wasn't a proper rating anyway, you just said a number followed by a word. Very constructive, indeed...
