Make Debate Club its own board?

Recommended Posts

I just thought of another subforum that I believe should be divided. Although we have been talking about merging subforums, I believe that the Debate Forum should be their own forum. The Debate Club is a mature forum where a lot of users discuss important issues. The Debate Club is a forum that is totally different than rants. There is less flaming and less people being immature.

There has been a higher traffic in the Debate Club lately, and I think that it deserves it's own spot in the limelight. I know the traffic hasn't been overwhelming, but neither has the rants forum. I think that if anything, the rants forum should be a sub-forum of the Debate Club. The Debate Club just seems more useful and it influences the good parts of Tip.It because it shows that debates can occur without spam or flaming. The rants forum is simply a way for people to blow off steam, not much discussion can flow through that. The Debate Club actually has discussion going on. There usually is no right or wrong in a debate, that's why this forum is so great!

Thanks for listening :)

:) Thanks!

Thanks Ard for making a sticky in Debate Club about this too! :P

Devoted has a good point there. I don't think rants and debate club should even be classified under one forum. Both forums are not actually related in content at all, Debate club should not be put in a subforum under rants and vice versa.

Strangely with WotLK so near, I wished I could delay it a bit to push through that last TBC content in MH/BT :'(.

This was also something brought up amongst the moderators a couple weeks/months back. I'd be all for making the Debate Club its own forum. I'd rather not make Rants a subforum under it though.

Yeah, thanks The Sith for splitting them up. I wasn't too sure if I should split it or not. I was thinking that if Debate Club had to stay intact with the Rants forum, then Debate Club should be the primary forum with Rants as the subforum. The goal of this thread was to seperate the two. The two, in my opinion, are nothing alike, therefore, earn their own place on the front page.

That was exactly my point! I agree with them both not being superior to the other, therefore, neither deserves to be the others subforum, but if they could not liberate Debate Club into it's own forum, I thought it would be best served as the main forum rather than the subforum!

Thanks again Tripsis for jumping on board another one of my ideas. :)

The Debate Club was created based on a discussion thread that began on the Rants forum. Because it was something new, we created it as a subforum to Rants, since the bulk of the users interested were regulars to the Rants forum.

Now that the forum has maintained success, it may be time to move it out on it's own.

You tell us.

Well, so far everyone agrees that has seen this post. I don't think that anyone would be disappointed to see the Debate Club leave the Rants subforum. I just don't believe that it belongs there. Due to increasing traffic, I think it deserves it's own spot in the limelight. If it recieves this chance, more mature users will see the Debate Club and become an active poster. I think that it is a situation where it can't go wrong, only right!

Thanks! :)

I agree it is time for Debate Club to leave Rants subforum and move it on it's own if anything it will generate more traffic which can only be a good thing. I remember this being discussed a few months back amongst us Moderators/Admin if the Debate Club did well on the board it would have it's own forum.

I highly support this along with a few others here. :)

Well it only has like 3/4 new topics a month so im going to have to say I don't think its a good idea.

Bringing it out of rants may attract more traffic for the forum and hopefully more good topics to be created?

On the flip side, bringing it out into others view may make there be more "rant like" posts. I think the people that like to debate know where the Debate subforum is. Still, I think we should move it out and see if the results are for the better.

There's also people that like to Debate that doesn't know where the forum is. By the way, you can't make a hundred posts a month in the Debate Forum. There is no way that there are that many issues to debate. If you want the Debate forum to be totally crazy topics that no one likes to debate, then you can get a hundred posts a month. If you want a well thought out debate, there may only be three or four a month. Plus, a debate is different than any other forum or topic on Tip.It. It is always there to be debated. There is usually always a good side and a bad side to everything, no matter how Jagex tries to change it.

I really don't think that the Debate forum will become a new rant forum if it were to be brought out underneath the Rant forum. If you place the two next to eachother, and people wish to rant, they will see Rant Forum! They aren't going to go more down the line and see Debate Club and decide that they're rant is better suited there. It just isn't logical in my opinion. I believe if the Debate Club get's it's place in the index, it should be right above or below the Rants forum. By doing this, it will show a distinct difference between the two. This will also make it a lot less confusing for users. Also, most forums on the index have a description underneath them. On the Debate Club you could put NOT for Rants and Vice Versa along with the description. I got this idea from the Website Discussion. It has in red, "NOT FOR CORRECTIONS". I don't think it could get any clearer than that!

Im against this as I think it will make it become another 'General P2P'.

By which I mean it will become popular with the people who currently post there and ruin the board (we would get topics like 'Whats you favourite RS Tree?')

I think we should leave it as it is :D

Which is also against the rules anywhere on the board because it's considered spam... I don't see where you are going with this? Debate Club is for debates. General P2P is for is for P2P discussion. They both very different. The topics in General P2P are nothing like the topics of Debate Club either. By simply moving Debate Club to the index page, it's going to get more attention than it has recieved in the past. Therefore, there will be more discussion. Because there is more discussion doesn't mean that there will be someone who will ruin it. There are other boards out there where people don't ruin the forum either. Just because General P2P has those occasional posters doesn't mean Debate Club will. They are different forums for a reason, and I can see the difference between the two.

I see your point but it is common to see people ignore General board rules which are plainly stated in stickies.

I think if the same users notice this board on Runescape discussions they will jump in ignoring the rules and stickies on spam replies and fill the board with the exact posts it does not wish to see.

I may be wrong but just my two cents :?

I really don't think that assumption could be made between the two boards. I see your point, you fear that if it gets too much limelight, the board may go out of control. That's really a risk you're going to have to take. I think the moderators in there can handle it. If you read in the sticky of what you want to see happen in the Debate Club, you would see that they are stating their moderating in Debate Club is not really that tough. They even have time to go through the posts and remove spam! I think a little bit more attention won't hurt and they will be able to deal with it.

I don't think people will go to the Debate Club and post spam if it makes the index. Most people know about the Debate Club as it is. I don't see how putting it on the first page could hurt any.

I have often wondered, myself, how the two fit together. I think this could help make the debates more interesting and still not fill the forum with spam. You have my support in the matter.

Thanks for your support!

Im not one to be pesimistic, but its been about for nearly half a year, and theres not even two pages of debates... And most of them are locked/pointless...

I'd say keep it as it is for now... Untill some more mature players find there way onto it.

Half the time, Mature players don't go to the Rants forum because of all the immature people there. By removing Debate Club from the Rants forum, it would remove it from the area of immaturity and give Mature People more of a reason to come...

don't worry, you are going to "hell" anyway. wanna race to see who gets there first?

That's the exact response I would give to that DarkBlade. Thanks for that!

Also, I don't see how you could say most of them are locked. I went and counted for you the number of locked threads from rants compared ot Debate Club. Rants had 17 locked posts but double the posts of Debate Club. Debate Club had 5 locked posts, two of which the author asked them to be locked. So, that narrows it down to 3 locked topics for half the topics. Therefore, if it had double the topics, only 6 would be locked compared to Rants 17. So, no, there aren't a lot of locked threads in Debate Club.

Also, I don't see how you could say there are pointless topics. Every forum has pointless topics. But once again, lets compare the Rants forum with Debate Club. Rants forum has a lot of under 10 post repsonses on the first page. 9 to be exact. Debate Club only has 5 under 10 posts. And like you said, that's half of the posts of Debate Club is the first page. It seems to me that Rants is more useless than Debate Club.

So, unless you had different reasoning, Debate Club is more deserving of limelight than Rants forum anyways.

I think it'd be nice as a new forum. it doesnt get much attention being just a parasite attached to rants. i practically abandoned the board, because discussions aren't exactly "heated" when you're waiting 15 mins for someone to even toss a debate <.<

[hide=]

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

  • 2 weeks later...

why don't we just stick this in the Debate Club? It's more intelligent than anything else there anyway. ::' However, I do have to say that the Debate Club needs to be placed in its own spot in the Index, it would encourage more well-thought out, thought-provoking responses that are necessary for the forum's survival. Not only would you get more intelligent posts, but you'd also be able to ease the load on Debate Club patrons by making it easier to access the best forum (in my opinion) on these boards.
