private schools: for or against?
Still, if nothing is done to make public schools better, why should everyone get a poor education? So basically what your saying is that poor people have less of a right to an educatation than anyone else? No matter what you say. In real life that's what matters. Poor people DO get less health, education, entertainment, etc. You saying they have the right to get good education isn't going to change that. My point here is: why should everyone get poor education when there are people who can get better education, and perhearps figure out a way to give everyone good education in the future? Some people are naturally more intelligent than others and given an equal playing field this would be reflected to a greater extent by a persons grades. Unfortunatly high school grades are slowly begining to reflect the quality of the school the student has attended. Equality in schooling would better reflect the skills of a student rather than the ability of schools to force-feed limited syllabus specific information to students at the expense of teaching actual subjects. Its why they give out Scholarships sorry, i needed to make that big and bold, because nobody realised :-k Sorry could you quote me the percentage of the entire private school population that is there via Scholarships clever clogs? Im willing to bet it is less than 20% if not less than that.

private schools: for or against?
Edited your statement to make it more accurate :D It's more accurate, but still, there are lots of cases of kids who were born into terrible social poverty and difficulties, but managed to rise out of it and really make something of their lives. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule. However, they are exactly that exceptions who, regardless of their plight, would have suceeded in life. Unfortunately there are others who because of their situation don't achieve what they potentially could have done if they had been born into better circumstances (this being the far more common scenario). ---------------------- Unrelated Note - I think in posts regarding wealth, class and sociological issues there should be some sort of prerequisite where you post your/your families socio-economic status. I realise it completely unfeasable and verges on intrusive but it would be a great way of showing everybody's bias.

Poisoned Ex-KGB Agent assasinated in UK
Yeah it was just confirmed on the News that he was killed by radiation poisoning and that "major doses" of Polonium 210 were found in places he had been. I think if there was any doubt before that this was the KGB then this just removed it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6181050.stm

Poisoned Ex-KGB Agent assasinated in UK
I didnt mean going back from where they were during communism I meant before Putin became President. Also note apartment bombing was is 1999 the 2 incidents you refer to came after ward. Im not condoning what Russia or the Chechens did by the way I was explaining Litvinenko's allegations.

Poisoned Ex-KGB Agent assasinated in UK
It seems that since Putin took over in Russia it has been going backwards and this seems to be another indication of it. Its believed that Litvinenko was killed by the FSB (formerly KGB) over his claims that the FSB ordered the killing of Boris Berezovsky, the assasination of Anna Politkovskaya (who both held powefull position in Russian society and were vocal critics of Putin) and the possible KGB involvement in 1999 Russian apartment building bombing (which killed almost 300 people) in order to re-enter Checnya (which Russia did despite no evidence of Chechen involvement. Litvinenko's doctors first thought that he was poisoned using Thalium (which was previously used in rat poison) however, no traces were found in his blood. It is now suspected that an unknown complex poison was used which many suggest points to FSB involvement due to its vast resources. This whole affair reminds me of the assasination of Georgi Markov who was killed in London after he was poisoned using Ricin which was delivered via an umbrella with a Ricin vial in its tip. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Litvinenko http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_apartment_bombings http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Berezovsky http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgi_Markov

respect for ones parents
The problem isn't just the children though, alot of it is parents. Alot of parents are just too easy on their children and give in to their children for an easy life. For example the video you mentioned, would that child shout and scream for what he wanted if he knew that his tactics wouldnt work? I dont think so. What people forget is that children are smarter than they give them credit for, if they find a way to get what they want, they will use it to manipulate their parents into getting their way all the time.

Odd Situation
You said it yourself, your mate deserved it. While he didnt throw the first punch it does seem he created the problem so he should be a man and handle it himself instead of trying to get people to protect him. You shouldn't create a problem with someone if your not willing to handle it by yourself.

New Rap = Funny, not Good
Sure the majority of rap thats being played on major networks like MTV isnt great but it sells. So who is to blame the people making money from what they do or the people who buy what is considered to be a poor product? I like rap music but even I cant stand some of the stuff that gets played at the moment. There is alot of good rap music around at the moment its just a matter of having to look for it, for example the new Jay-Z album is pretty good and it lacks his usual boasting that people criticise him for. Im also looking forward to the new Nas CD coming out.

Donald Rumsfeld Resigns
Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama are two of the Democrats stars at the moment so its a possibility. Although I know that Obama ruled out any possibility of him standing in '08 and Im not sure about Clinton. Hypothetically though if Hilary Clinton became President would that make Bill Clinton the First Gentleman? What exactly would his title be?

Football!
You've hit the nail on the head for me there. Newcastle and their fans have been putting unreasonable demands on their managers for years. For some reason the expect to be Premiership contenders every season or in a cup final but they never give any manager time. If Newcastle was a successful club then it would be understandable but they haven't won anything for over 50 years.

What movies have you seen from the IMDB top 250?
Just for those who dont realise but 'Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il' in Italian translates roughly into 'The God, The Bad & The Ugly.' I didnt realise that 1st time this was up. Incidently I just got it on DVD. Ill edit my old post tommorow with my updated list.

Stealing...
If you've been caught then theres no getting out of it. If it is the case that you've been caught then the best idea would be a man and take the punishment on the chin. Stealing for you at the moment Im suspecting is just a phase (since your so unaware of the possible punishmens) and its a phase alot of teens go through (myself included when I was 14 or 15) but what you want to ask is, do I really want to go down that road? I mean I stopped stealing quickly because I realised that it was pointless, could affect my future drastically. I mean lets face it you're no master criminal if you didnt get caught this time but you eventually will if you keep going.

"liberty and justice for all?"
So you're implying that people should be locked up without evidence?Would that in itself not be a constraint on peoples liberty and against the whole ideal of justice. Last time I looked everyone had the right to be innocent until proven guilty beyond all reasonable doubt (as is the case in most democratic societies). Personally I feel that sitting during the plede of allegiance is a pointless protest, you as an individual isnt going to be given a platform of any importance to air your grievances with the state of the legal system by protesting in this way. If you have a serious concern you should try raising it with a politician or joing some sort of organised protest group to make your point instead of making yourself seem like some one man crusade. Those methods in my opinion will be taken more seriously also.

Football!
Just when you think 'Mad Vlad' can't get any worse he pulls this rabbit out of the hat. If he is serious about this, (and knowing him he might well be) he must have completely lost it. I mean sure sacking a few managers is bad, (especially George Burley, who had won every game since taking up the role).Sure ousting your chairman and chief excecutive in favour of your son is mad, but this is absolute lunacy. Although to be fair their oppenents for the game in question are Dunfermline who at this moment are managerless and joint bottom on points in the league so this shouldnt become an issue. :D That being said, selling Craig Gordon would go down as one of the biggest mistakes in Scottish Football history considering that he is the nations only truly world class play, you can scoff at all you like but just look at his performances over the last 18 months and then count the number of major errors he makes in that whole period.

The new Martin Scorsese: The Departed.
Ive been looking forward to seeing The Departed for a while now. It has a lot of hype to live up to but with such a great cast and director Im sure it'll be atleast good. I'm also really excited about seeing Jack Nicholson playing the 'bad guy' again. Oh and if anyone has saw it please hide spoilers for those of us who have not by making the text very small like this since colouring your text may only cover a spoiler in some board styles.

Football!
They only really had Govou (who isnt a regular in the starting 11) and Gallas out, other than those 2 France boasted a fully available squad.

Football!
Scotland 1 - France 0 :D Lmoa we rode our luck a little but we got there in the end what a brilliant result. It was a great team performance, eveyone on the pitch lloked like they were willing to die for the cause - excactly what we missed under Bertie Vogts, Walter Smith has completely turned the team around in no time at all. I bet France never thought that their 7-year long qualifying winning streak would be ended by Scotland. Apart from beating England in '67 that may be one of our greatest results when you consider the quality of the opposition & the overwhelming odds against us. In a qualifying group that has the 2 world cup finalists (France & Italy) as well as the world cup quarter finalist (Ukraine), Scotland is top of the group with a 3 point lead! Carlsberg don't make great football matches but if they did.....

Afirmative Action
Well, in todays world, at least in todays America, school should be equal. Our school system is corrupt, and it isn't because of race, it is corrupt because of funding, and the goverment. People in lower income areas, have worse schools, and some of the damage effecting the schools is caused by the kids attending, and their background. Higher end schools are mostly private, and the ones that are not, are situated in wealthy areas. This therefore means, that the education you get, even though it should be equal, is based entirely upon your wealth stautes, your income. Another reason why America is a Plutocracy. I do agree that AA should possibly be broadened to accomodate income rather tha race. However, I believe the thinking behind leaving it as a racial policy is that many minority are disproportianatly poor compared to other groups. I think thats reflected in the fact that the top private schools are almost exclusivly made up of white children. I do however, see where you're coming from and sympathise to some extent.

Afirmative Action
Affirmative Action, in an ideal world wouldn't be needed but this isnt an ideal world. AA is needed in the USA to make up for the history of discrimination that has been felt by many groups ( mainly non-white racial groups, particularly African-Americans). The point many of you seem to be missing is that for many of these groups there has been less access to quality education which therefore limits academic performance, this doesnt mean they are less able, infact many, if they had access to similar high quality education felt by most people in the majority, would have similar academic grades. The purpose of AA is therefore, to put who have the natural abilty to enter college in with others of equal natural ability who have for certain social circumstances, happened to recieve a far higher standard of education thus receiving better grades, AA simply attempts to redress the balance. If there hadnt been such whidespread discrimination in previous years in the US there would be no need for this. Sorry if that came across as pedantic and repetative but I felt it was important. ------------------ I found it interesting how in the space of 6 words you went from British to English. Your feelings of alienation with the government in a way reflects how many Scottish people feel, as being the "bastard child" of Britain, note - the poll tax experiment, north sea oil revenue vs. Scottish spending & Highland Clearances.

Anyone noticed?
It feels so long since the old DK3 forums. Im was so glad when they went I hated them, they were so slow and those horrible board styles it had used to give me headaches. Hence why I was so quick to sign up on this incarnation of tip.it forums. Now that I think about it, maybe Ive posted on these forums for too many years now, I feel like its turning me into one of those cynical argumentative old man types. :D

Che Guevara
Yeah I liked the Motorcycle Diaries as well. I thought it was a good excersice in showing how he came to form his ideas from what he witnessed as he travelled. That being said it was also a very good film regardless of the historical status of its main protagonist. It was quite one sided especially if you note that the actor who plays Che's friend in the film is infact Che Guevara's second cousin in real life, so it obviously had to approval of his remaining relatives.

Your opinions on cocaine--the drink?
Eh, not necessarily. When it comes to marketing, the saying "bad press is good press" doesn't really apply. Ahh but what you are forgetting is what I like to call 'The Idiot Factor'. While I will admit in the long term ( lets just say 2 years plus) it wont be a sustainable just based on this controversy however, in the short term I think it will. Alot of idiotic rebelious teenagers are bound to consider the drink cool for a short amount of time at least, which can only help it because lets face it there are a huge number of idiotic teenagers. Plus being on CNN is millions worth of advertising for free. The only way I can really see this not being a short-term success is if it is banned or if it forced to change its name & thus mess up the company's marketing. Anyway thats my opinion but I guess we can only wait to see.

Your opinions on cocaine--the drink?
That just depends on how dodgy the bars you go to are lol. I do understand why people are against it ( the glorification of drugs & the possible consequences of this) but you just have to remember that its just another cynical marketing strategy. Plus anyone who is stupid enough to buy real cocaine (the drug) due to being in some way influenced by this drink or any other glorification of cocaine is an idiot to begin with. Anyway the fact that this marketing ploy has us all talking about the drink merely means that its working.
