The Gaza Strip
A little off topic, but is any war actually needed? I'm not sure why you only highlighted the past tense. :| In an ideal world, no war is ever needed. Of course that doesn't really relate to reality. Unfortunately, there are are many wars across the world in history that we're necessary, as I'm sure anyone who's ever read into history would agree. But usually wars follow the failure of a diplomatic process. It's quite clear looking at this that Israel has not ever compromised on the Gaza Strip and certainly did not gave time for diplomatic efforts to avoid this war. It was a shocking attack (in both takes of the adjective) designed to portray the Israeli government as strong and re-electable. Hence why the Israeli foreign minister is so adamant to continue this war even though she is aware this war isn't achieving anything tangible, and IDF soldiers are dying. As for your comments about democracy: I agree. It's exactly how Obama got elected, and how Bush stayed for two terms. Kerry was seen as an unsafe pair of hands in a time where fear of another 9/11 gripped America. It's about impressions.

Too fat to adopt-A new species of faceplants
having a slow metabolism does not equal fat though, some people are luckier then others but that doesnt give anyone an excuse to be morbidly obese. Agreed. I'm a fan of the good old kick up the backside myself. Especially when it's so easy to get help from the NHS these days too!

Too fat to adopt-A new species of faceplants
I was thinking more along the lines of: eat less or exercise more =/= turn white. Unlike obesity, which is far easier to deal with than being black.

Too fat to adopt-A new species of faceplants
It's like a black kid who gets picked on by a teacher shouting out 'You're just saying that because I'm black!!" Not really, no. :?

The Gaza Strip
No, what we do on this thread is denounce the killing of over 900 people in a needless war which after its 17th day has yet to yield any results for either belligerent.

How tall are ya? I'm 5"0' and my fingers can barely reach. Trying to stretch it across while playing for 4 minutes is just... no.

The Gaza Strip
Just an off-topic side note, but since the issue of terrorism largely surrounds this debate I think it's quite interesting. Here is a word cloud of all the words President Bush used during his State of Union addresses, from 2001-08. The cloud doesn't really concern me. We all know that the War on Terror has been the mantra of Bush's time in office. What amazes me is how vaguely defined the term 'terrorism' is in US politics, and how that has spilt out to the wider world when discussing terrorist groups. Look at the "Changing issues" section, with the war on terror. Aside from the term 'Iraq' (for obvious reasons), the two most popular terms are 'terror' and 'enemy'. Indeed, two years after the war in Iraq started, Bush used the term 'Al Qaeda' only two times, whilst using the term 'terror' twenty seven times. This use of umbrella terms makes it easier I suppose for Bush to justify the coalition's operations in the Middle-East, and supporting Israel in its fight against Hamas and Hezbollah. For context, given the state of the current economy and where the roots of the financial crisis lie, he used the term 'housing' not even once during that same State of Union address (2005). Personally, I find it scary the world's most vibrant and successful democracy seemingly falls so easily to scaremongering and fear, and romanticised, idealogical hope.

Too fat to adopt-A new species of faceplants
I remember seeing this on the news. I sympathise, but the adopters have to be healthy to ensure stability for the child. Having a BMI of over 40 clearly is not healthy; it's morbidly obese. EDIT: If you want something to facepalm at, try this.

Dreams and life-long goals
Generally, to help others around me live easier and more comfortable lives. In real terms, that's my main motivation for becoming a doctor. I want to become a GP, and work in a poor area, like the one I've been raised in, for the NHS.

Where do you want to live?
If I could speak French fluently, I'd live in Paris. Maybe in one of the suburbs. If you've ever been to Paris and seen the outskirts of the city you'd know just how impressive it actually is. Because all the buildings in Paris look uniform, the buildings there are as high as the buildings near the Champes E'lise.

The Gaza Strip
There can be no two-state solution as long as one of the states advocates the obliteration of the other. Even while their leaders have openly come out and said they'd accept a two-state solution? Whether or not Israel agrees with that solution is another matter. It would seem unfair to compare a terrorist group in the modern day to its past, and presume the group still stands for exactly the same things. 100 years ago, Sinn Fein said there could be no two-state solution in Ireland; now they're actively involved in power-sharing in Belfast of all places. Of course, the irony is, a lot of the IRA's funding back then came from Americans. Amazing how its stance on terrorism suddenly changed after WWII, isn't it? And what of Israel accepting Palestine's right to sovereignty? You seemed to tactically avoid my questions about the blockade on Gaza. The bolded bit made me sigh in despair, because it shows your complete lack of knowledge. These aren't exactly cruise missiles they're firing into Israel. Hamas barely needs any funding to carry out its attacks. All it needs is enough people alienated against Israel in the Gaza Strip willing to sign themselves up for the cause. Hence why Israel's actions are not only homicidal, they're also self-damaging in the long run.

The Gaza Strip
If it's just insignificant trash talk from 20 years ago, then why is Hamas so intransigent about removing it? It's obviously significant to Hamas, don't you think? Let's get this clear: Hamas hate Israel. We all know that. But people such as yourself are heading down a dangerous road here. In the post-9/11 world, it's now become commonplace for people to just brand groups they think are inconvenient as 'terrorists', and thus argue they should be wiped from the face of the Earth because of it, without even contemplating the possibility that their grievances may actually be reasonable. Yes, the rocket attacks are indiscriminate and therefore unjustifiable, but I can barely relate to the effect that the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip has had on both the Palestinian people and its economy. You can't argue that one of Palestine's main political parties is launching an attack on Israel, and then turn a blind eye to the purposeful suffering inflicted on the Gaza Strip by Israel. Hamas have laid down their conditions for a two-state solution. Frankly, I don't find their demands all that unreasonable, given it was land that was stolen from them during the Arab-Israeli. There, I said it. I accept a terrorist group's grievances are legitimate. Now what you gonna say?

America - Home of the Free?
What kind of puerile reasoning can possibly accompany those who want to restrict religious freedom? If that sort of thing's acceptable, maybe I should start saying the UK should ban any political parties that want to cut public spending.

The Gaza Strip
That was a comment made in Hamas' constitution 20 years ago. By that reckoning, we should all turn against Russia in case they turn us soviet. Hamas politicians were coming on TV no less than a year ago saying a two-state solution does exist if Israel agrees to Palestine's sovereignty and the '67 borders agreement originally drawn up by the UN. This whole "Hamas wants to drive the Jews into the sea" crap is exactly that.

Why is sex* bad?
Got any sources for that? I've heard information that suggests it's around 17/18 for both genders. In fact, there's some who doubt the validity of the term "sexual prime" altogether.

4-Day School Weeks?
Technically, Muslims are supposed to pray five times a day at specific times, some of which fall during lessons. They manage, just like Jews do in France on a Saturday. Yeah, that made me reluctant to post. But if you have a large Jewish population (I don't think you guys do in the UK or Australia? So my point wouldn't apply...) then there would definitely be issues. And as mentioned, it wouldn't be very fair if everyone worked for five days except for teachers. Ah, well life ain't fair. Eh. Meh... given they have 13 weeks of holidays a year I don't think they can really complain about flexible working hours.

I don't think it's just OT. Everywhere you look around here, there's small cliques. Tip.It really is nothing but a group of vaguely-related cliques. ...wow. Now I feel depressed. :? /emo

What is your 'thing'?
The guy people could go to if they got stuck on something. I didn't mind. Practice makes perfect and it meant I was solid with everyone.

what 6 words would you ban from media usage?
If people wanna be really difficult, just ban verbs. ;)

Guitar Hero/Rock Band Discussion thread
When I made the transition from medium to hard, I felt tempted at first to play the orange and blue fret with my little finger. As time went on though, I realised that was impossible. My advice would be to learn how to switch between index on green, and index on red, with the other three fingers on the next three frets up. Then learn how to alt strum. For practice, I'd say the part after the second verse (ending "workers are going home, yeah") in My Name is Jonas. The song's in 6/8 time, and there's a note on the first beat straight afterwards, so you'll learn to come off it as well as go onto it.

Grief, and Coping.
You just have to remember three things: 1) Your grandmother passed away peacefully, without any pain, having clearly lived a very content life. She also went in the knowledge that she loved you, and you loved her. 2) It doesn't matter if your mother and your sister aren't there physically, so long as you all know their thoughts are with the rest of the family. It's the thought that counts, actually being there is just a formality. Make sure she keeps on the phone, talking to her relatives and stuff, so they get the support they need off each other. 3) Of course how you feel about someone dying depends on your connection to that person. When it comes to your granddad, there isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to feel, just let whatever you feel about it run naturally. The fact you've posted about it on here asking for advice probably shows you're dealing with this well anyway, so don't feel guilty about it. As far as I personally am concerned, I've experienced all but one of my grandparents dying, and I've experienced my mum dying, and yeah obviously I felt more about my mum than I did about any of the others. I suppose that did make me feel like I was "wrong" because they were all relatives and they were all human, but I had to accept that 'I feel because it's natural to feel that way', if that makes sense. As a Man Utd, the Munich air disaster will always make me feel strongest anyway.

E.U getting too much power?
That analogy is stupid. Why don't I compare Germany alone with you and, say, Zimbabwe together? If you're going to compare countries, at least do it on a like-for-like basis, and look for explanations behind those figures rather than leaving it open and implying it's all due to laziness. For instance, Poland has a poverty rate of 23.8%, Bulgaria's is only 12.8% and France doesn't even bother recording, although the CIA's estimate is a minuscule 6.2%. Collectively, we're still the biggest contributor of foreign aid in the world. I'd say that gives us some pretty decent leverage.
