Celestial surgebox
Totally agreed, and you can tell from the whole "Signature Heroes" thing that's the image Jagex had when they made dungeoneering. But you know full well that when something is made 'easier', Jagex have always felt a need to do a reversal.

Celestial surgebox
My only worry is that Jagex think this would be too 'easy'. A team with two mages and three melee would far outperform a team of five meleers, because the team is flexible and can adapt better to the challenges faced inside the dungeon. Primal warriors in a gd? No problem with two fire surgers. Big problem for five 2hers. In the interests of keeping xp rates low (and consequentially, tokens), I can see Jagex destroying any real use for this in the dungeoneering meta-game, forcing it as a niche item for dung'ers who use mage purely and couldn't care less about anything else.

Celestial surgebox
Ooh, that's pretty nice. Now, we just need to wait for them to wield staves... And this surgebox glitch is rather nasty. I really hope Jagex gets around to fixing this soon, by making it ammo-bind only. I get the feeling Jagex released this after realising one ammo slot for a ranger actually works out as multiple ammo slots needed for a mage due to the necessity for multiple rune types. If rangers don't have to sacrifice an item slot for arrows, I think it would be harsh to say the least if mages were forced to lose one of their item binds (athough you get a damage bonus every five hits so that logic isn't completely linear) Let's hope it's a glitch though, for versatility's sake.

Pro DGing
This line of argument frustrates me. If I went into a medium dungeon right now and tried to rely on food and prayer alone, I'd die within ten rooms. Goodness knows how much that tactic would fail with my defence level on a large floor, although I'll confess I've never been on one, I know it's twice as large as medium. At level 76 defence, my combat stats can hardly be considered 'low' in the context of everyone who plays RuneScape (ranked 520K out of several million accounts, in the top 30% at worst). Racheya touched on this in her article a couple of weeks ago, and she was shouted down for not knowing any better, but the inconvenient truth is not everyone has 99 defence/HP, nor should they to enjoy dungeoneering without being told they 'SUCK'. Some people have to make armour to survive in dung without dying. Suck it up, go form a clan where making armour is banned. Otherwise, don't expect some stranger you've never spoken to before from w117 to conform to your exacting standards.

Smithing -- 60 - 70?
A cheap alternative could be mithril bolts with the blast furnace, but I can tell you from personal experience that it's much slower. I did that over the bonus XP weekend because I was short of capital to invest. With the time saved on goldsmithing, you can probably make up the losses elsewhere.

02-Nov-2010 - Dungeoneering The Warped Floors
I didn't have time to take pictures, but one of the new challenges is Mercenary Leader. Big combat level (I think it was 130s), casting huge earth spells, maybe surge. Summons other forgotten warriors/rangers/mages to help with the fight, all of which have Tier 10 gear (I was in full Katagon w/2h, max for me due to defence and attack level). To complete you have to defeat the leader, but when you've got three different attack styles with Tier 10 stats coming at you with 70ish defence it's pretty difficult to land a hit without needing to eat food more. Died once, in the end I deflected mage and focused on the Leader, just taking the other hits (including a Prommy 2h) on the chin. On the other hand, I noticed more bovimastyx in the dungeon than usual, all of which gallimastyx. Just an observation, there may be no connection. But I'm wondering if using ranged armour and praying melee/ranged coupled with plenty of food is the best move? Leaving a gatestone outside the room may be a good way to avoid a cheap death too - I didn't do this because I just saw what looked like a forgotten mage, only to find out it was far more powerful and summoning other humanoids capable of hitting me with triple digits.

Behind The Scenes November
The point I'm illustrating is that 'low' is relative. If you're got 8 hours to spend a day on RuneScape level 80 mage probably isn't low. If you've only got an hour at most, well it's a different story. Telling people to 'shut it' based on such subjective criteria seems a tad rude, really.
-
Fun.
Well, why would a sociopathic arsonist be making fires on on a virtual environment like RuneScape anyway? Defeats the point, really. No one cares about setting the GE on fire, that's not gonna bring much attention.
-
Behind The Scenes November
A quest for which a combat level of 100+ is recommended was the best example of a recent low level update you could find?
-
Fun.
Did you just associate psychopathy with playing RuneScape? Since no sane person finds serial murder fun, you're either saying all Level 99 firemakers are psychopaths or you're talking out your jacksy.

Behind The Scenes November
Just quoting to say that, in any other game than RuneScape, that argument makes absolutely no sense... Hmm... Unfortunately Hunter is one of those skills that requires attention at every stage while grinding. You can go full steam and do nothing except hunt with a look of sheer determination on your face, or go a little more slowly and mix it up with a minigame or D&D. I personally prefer the latter, and did it that way in a few days. Maybe 7/8 hours total. My point is though: 7 hours of work isn't high by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, the Herblore requirement probably takes longer.
-
Behind The Scenes November
Herblore habitat sees two of my favourite skills being added to, but given the fact that Construction was originally designed as a money drain in exchange for XP, I have a feeling this new update will see material rewards as opposed to faster XP rates. "Eight Construction features" has me hoping for some POH improvements. By the way, you realise 70 hunter takes literally days to gain on red sallys (and that's without even trying too hard)?

Jagex's new bot punishment: Level resetting
Both Microsoft and Nintendo release system updates that prevent cheats from using their online services all the time, some of them even 'brick' the console beyond repair in the process, but I'd hardly suggest Bill Gates is struggling to find enough money to pay his taxes at the moment.

Jagex's new bot punishment: Level resetting
Logically, stat reduction happens through banning anyway. Perm banning is essentially the same as reducing all skills back to level 1. The account in question has only had a few levels taken off them. This is quite obviously a lesser punishment, and it also begs the question as to what happens with non-skiller bots; PC bots, green dragon bots etc Personally, I wish they'd just go back to perm banning them on the first offence. It's nice and simple.

My goodness, this is a completely different game...
Yeah sure, go to w99 CW now and try finding a decent game. Good luck. :shades:

My goodness, this is a completely different game...
Hear hear. CW was my favourite minigame, but I've not played it at all since coming back six months ago. It's now basically a contest of who can pile most ancients and the worlds are so packed you can't do anything to stop it. Going onto w99 and playing against other TIFers had some charm to it. It's a shame Jagex ruined that too.

Efficiency
Perfect example of a RuneScape efficiency nutcase losing all perspective of a game, which I believe was the phenomenon mentioned in the OP. And so we come full circle. Overkilled thread locked for sanity plz?

Tip.It Times - 24th October 2010
I'm a little bit puzzled as to why you ever thought the auto-grouping system world work for Dung. They almost never do. In an MMORPG, there's a certain amount of responsibility on the player to go out and find people that will mutually help them to achieve their goals. Else, they may as well be playing the copious number of solo RPGs available on the Xbox 360 and NDS. That philosophy is the basis of people forming clans. Jagex shouldn't be doing it for you - it's up to you to go and find people you can Dung well with. Considering that evaluation is a key part of any design process, the fact the auto-grouping system is so bad at its job suggests the developers didn't really care all that much about it anyway.

Does Runescape increase your self-esteem?
You could give me 200M xp in all skills, but if my life was so bad that I needed to be on RuneScape for the length of time required to get said amount of experience, I reckon I'd be close to suicide and almost certainly without a career. Like anyone else, I play games to "escape", not to bolster self-esteem.
-
Skill speculations
I don't know if I'd quit RuneScape if all skills were boosted to 120. After all, nothing would be changed below 99. I would just make it my personal mission to rubbish the idea that Jagex are either ethical or that they're concerned for their players' health. Thankfully, because Dungeoneering is the "end-game" skill, I don't see this happening. \:D/

Is RuneScape filling a void?
Wrong. Drug addiction can be physiological in addition to physical. Physical dependence is the condition that exists when a person must continue to take a drug in order to avoid withdrawal sickness such as fever, chills, tremors, convulsions, and vomiting. This can be seen with heroin and alcohol. Physiological dependence is the condition that exists when a person must continue to take a drug in order to satisfy intense mental and emotional craving for the drug. This can be seen with cocaine. And physiological symptoms in video games is just like addiction in drugs. If you bothered to read my first post, I cited a very descriptive example and signs of addiction. There's also plenty of articles online depicting video game addiction. Maybe you're the one that should bother to check what addiction actually means. Oh, well if WebMD says so... There is not a single stat or shred of evidence in that article to confirm that video gaming addiction exists. The days of sticking "MD" at the end of your name and claiming whatever the hell you like about the human body, regardless of evidence, are long gone I'm afraid. Secondly, 'physical' and 'physiological' are terms which are used interchangeably in the context of the human body - withdrawal and tolerance are the two conditions of physiological/physical addiction as laid out by the DSM-IV. Just to make things worse for your insistence that gaming addiction actually exists, the WebMD article itself further emphasises the psychological component: "Even with alcohol, it's not just physical. There's a psychological component to the addiction, knowing 'I can escape or feel good about my life.' Given the article lacks any hard numbers, what's to stop me arguing that 'gaming addiction' is simply the end result of avoidance personality disorder?

Are 99's really worth it...
I think fletching is a bad example of the point, since there *is* actually a benefit to 99 fletch (Prommy arrows), but as an example: * The highest level tree is Grave Creeper (level 90) * Choking ivy doesn't produce anything except the occasional bird's nest ** Birds nests are dropped by other trees Taking that into account, there is surely no reason to train woodcutting beyond level 90 using ivy, apart from getting level 99 specifically to get a cape that you can show off to other people. The question is: Is a perceived social 'need' to get a 99 skill a worthwhile excuse for getting 99? Not in my opinion.
-
Are 99's really worth it...
I don't see how that argument is "void". Fundamentally he's right - people who have 99 in fletching will usually have stood in a bank and clicked the same thing over and over enough times so as to earn the level. In terms of a personal skillset (as in human skillset, not RuneScape stats), it doesn't really 'prove' anything except determination, in which case, 99 runecrafters win the award for most determination hands down.
