2011/12 Football Season
It's not for me to judge whether the club should sell him. I know other examples of sportsmen and women being sacked/sold/banned for far less. But it's their choice. Surely, it's questionable how useful a top five world player really is if he's going to get banned for eight matches due to racist abuse, and potentially another long run of matches for biting another player. Liverpool needed Suarez in the final games of the season, and the start of next season, as they look to chase down Everton and end the season with as many points as they can. This afternoon, he put his manager in an extremely difficult position, and may have just cost himself, his teammates and his fans of that opportunity. Is that really the expected behaviour of a top-class player, playing for one of the biggest sporting franchises in the world? I wouldn't have said so, personally. Compare his attitude to the attitude showed by Sturridge, for example. I thought Sturridge played an amazing game and his presence instantly changed Liverpool's fortunes in the second half.

Boston Marathon Murders
Correlation doesn't mean causation. I'm not denying Islamism as fundamentally evil and deeply flawed, I just don't understand the significance of claiming it's 'worse than fundamental [religious sect Y]'. It isn't useful or particularly informative as a stand-alone statement. How about we do some research into why apparently moderate Muslims feel a need to turn themselves into religious zealots by strapping a bomb to themselves and killing as many people as possible in the ultimate act of cowardice. Maher's point wasn't that all Muslims share that same world view, his point was that Islam is the religion that has a monopoly on violence. When Piss Christ debuted, you didn't have Christians attempting to assassinate the artist, burn down the gallery, or even riot in the street and kill atheists. http://www.nationalr...arles-c-w-cooke When Jyllands-Posten published the cartoons of the prophet, there was large scale rioting and attacks on Christians and Danish people everywhere in the middle east, and eventually the attempted assassination of one of the artists. https://en.wikipedia...ons_controversy http://en.wikipedia....urt_Westergaard "Because I've not seen it, it doesn't exist." There are many examples of non-Muslims carrying out acts of extreme violence in the name of their own beliefs and you're really insulting all of our intelligence by claiming otherwise. Nazi propaganda once held that God himself had created the Master Race, and that this was papal justification for rampant and bloody anti-Semitism. We're not exactly going back as far as the Middle Ages here. If you're going to go down this route, then at least support Maher's actual position on religion and argue it as an atheist.

I don't think he has a leg to stand on and I don't sympathise with claims that he was set-up. I also know he does not represent the values of a vast majority of Muslims. That isn't "liberal bullshit". That's 20 years of experience living in a community where around half of the population were Muslim. I know it has its problems, as does any religion, but making some kind of logical somersault and stating that Jahar is an example of how Muslims around the world want to kill non-believers, or anyone who has anything bad to say about the prophet Muhammad is tenuous and blown out of all proportions. I suppose next you'll suggest all Catholics are murderous and dangerous because of the IRA, or paedophilic because of a minority of its clergy.

Things that annoy the HELL out of you.
This annoys me. I think board moderators/crew/staff should conduct themselves better. Sorry Star but it just lacks any class IMO. I'm well within the rules there and free to express myself in this venting thread. It's not like you guys (or... girls in your case) are part of a profession of moderators. This is something you do as and when during your free time. I see nothing wrong with what you wrote.

The failure of the proposed legislation in passing the Senate serves to underline just how divided the US is on gun control overall. It's one thing having an equal share of opinions either side, but the aggression and conviction that politicians and lay people use is intense. In almost every other political issue, people gravitate towards the "middle ground"... gun control is one of very few issues where opinion moves towards the extreme poles. There's very little room for compromise when both side's definition of compromise is "You don't understand what I'm trying to say, just accept what I say is true and don't argue."

Job adverts/careers advice adverts on Facebook marketed at a logged-in male (me) that have pictures of very pretty and uniformed women. I don't know what they're trying to say except for "Do this job AND YOU'LL GET TO BONE HER!"

Boston Marathon Murders
Most school massacres come across as indiscriminate and impersonal. Surely, killing/maiming as many people as possible takes on that nature. We're moving off the issue anyway. I don't see any sense in debating whether he or she should be labelled a terrorist, putting them in the same bracket as every other so-called terrorist that's ever lived (I suppose Guy Fawkes was a failed terrorist, by strict definition). The point is, somebody made a homemade bomb, they wanted to kill or injure as many unarmed American citizens as possible, and we don't really know why.

Boston Marathon Murders
The breaking news is they're preparing to make an arrest, although reports are conflicting. I know the saying about chickens and eggs, but let's avoid using emotional terminology and stick to objective facts. The bomb was clearly designed to cause terror. Was it part of a wider terrorist conspiracy? We can't possibly know yet.

There is a clear difference between legislating for things which have no strict purpose to kill people, and legislating for those things which do. It's disappointing you've even attempted to use that argument.

Boston Marathon Murders
This kind of logic is so stupid. No one is saying that those deaths are less important. But does it really come as a surprise that a bombing in a relatively safe country is more widely covered than a bombing in a country that has been plagued by violence for years? It's more the level of coverage provided. I could understand American news covering it over other headlines since it's a domestic issue, but from an international perspective, the coverage is clearly biased. Whichever way you look at the issue, many more people died elsewhere in the world in acts of terrorism alone that day, than died in Boston two days ago, and when you look at some of the weaker aspects of the coverage (speculation about other bombs which never had any truth to them, knee-jerk analyses), it's often not very helpful and definitely not merited. Instead of informing people about current events, it often portrays events as a real-life drama and treats the viewer as a passive and uncritical consumer.

I'd rather things like this bombing simply go unreported as well since it does nothing but spread fear and irrationality. Finally! Somebody gets it! [/hide] Not sure if I've posted this here before, but it backs up your point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PezlFNTGWv4 EDIT: Sorry for the double post, meant to edit this one into my previous post. EDIT 2: Everton played well that day.

Boston Marathon Murders
On the other hand, there was also a major 7.8-magnitude earthquake on the Iran-Pakistan border yesterday, the most powerful to hit Iran in half a century. It hit close to two cities, one of a population of 180,000 and another of 250,000. Lots of damage, potential for it to be a major disaster area. However, it's not even front page news this morning in the UK, partly because of the funeral of Baroness Thatcher as well as ongoing coverage of what can vaguely be described as news on the Boston bombings: the BBC got so desperate yesterday, there was an article on the front page of its sport website asking Paula Radcliffe whether she thought this Sunday's London Marathon would be safe. Because being a world record marathon runner, she's obviously more of an expert on terrorism and security than the chief of the Metropolitan Police. If anyone's interested, at least thirty Pakistanis died. Getting a credible source from Iran is obviously much harder but there's definitely several dozen injured, that much they can't deny to news agencies who saw it with their own eyes. News coverage, much like interpretation of our own history, is incredibly open to selective bias.

What would her parents form if you played a Polymerization card on them, I wonder.

You're obviously talking about the RuneScape OST, with its polyphonic tones and a new shuffle button placed in the playlist menu today. Or quite possibly not... (To be fair, there are some RuneScape tracks I really enjoy. It's one area where Jagex have really upped their game in recent years)

Boston Marathon Murders
There wasn't a third bomb and it wasn't defused. The JFK library 'bomb' later transpired to be unconnected to the two bombs which bookmarked the closing 100 yards of the marathon stretch. I believe they confirmed today that only the two bombs which exploded were ever present; there are no more and reports of other devices being found or defused were false positives. We shouldn't jump to conclusions. Not all terrorist organisations deliberately intend to kill as many people as possible and then shout out to the world when it happens. All we know at the moment is that the components (pressure cookers, nails, ball bearings, perhaps even the gunpowder itself) look fairly primitive and commonly available, which doesn't naturally hint towards an internationally organised conspiracy.

The overprotective behaviour is an issue between her and her parents. Although it's frustrating for you to see, and you think it's stunting her own independence, she needs to realise that for herself and tell her parents when they're being too zealous. I wouldn't worry about that specifically, if I were you; I'd instead focus on comforting her when it starts to affect her mood. Apart from that... they clearly want her to be successful and do well for herself. How is that any different to what you want for your girlfriend?

Cheesy pop songs from your childhood. :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfcAvS4QbDg Especially being in a room full of equally drunk people in their early twenties, and you're all dancing and singing to it.

OK, I can understand that. Muggi's right, I've been a 17 year old lad in a relationship, I know the situation. If the roles were reversed, and it was you wanting to abstain, would she be as altruistic as you are being now about wanting to make you happy, even if it's inconveniencing her and neglecting her from what she desires from the relationship? If she would be OK with that, go for it. If you don't think she would be prepared to do that for you, think more deeply about how much you're tolerating this just to keep her all loved up to yourself. You don't need to reply. I know I can trust you to work through the answer by yourself.
