  1. It's pretty easy to make niggly edits to an article, such that they can't be reverted without lots of effort on somebody else's part. Especially on a wiki, as I've said, that has no means of verifying its information. I could claim that Nyancat is a level 789 monster fought in One Small Favour using a butterfly net and, quite laughably, there's not any onus on me to provide a source for it as evidence.
  2. Well, this is the part I've never understood about Jagex's policy on images taken in-game using somebody else's equipment. You're right in that if I take a picture of Justin Beiber on my smartphone, I haven't broken his parent's commercial copyright. However, if I take a picture of Jad using my print screen button, I've broken Jagex's commercial copyright short of a fair use rationale. I can understand that the concept of "Jad" and his artwork and any images taken by Jagex themselves may be protected under copyright when published on the main RuneScape website (see the point I made on original commercial purpose), but I don't understand why images I've taken using my computer stored on my hard drive are also protected under copyright. The whole point of copyright laws were to protect people's financial interests. If RS Wiki applied all the fair use criteria I mentioned in my previous post, and only kept it to minimal use, I don't see how they're frustrating Jagex as a money-making business. If anything; an image posted under fair use rationale with its copyrighted status clearly marked on another website, where it's being stored and shown to the viewing public completely free of charge to Jagex, it probably helps their financial interests in terms of free brand placement. I suspect that's why Jagex have been so blase on the issue of enforcing that copyright not just on RS Wiki, but here (bestiary images are no different in terms of procurement--I should know having worked on there for over a year) and every other fansite. Anyway, we're digressing. The point is, wikis are simply a collaboration of many editors' content, with each of their edits licensed for the wiki to publish under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 arrangement. This Commons license is completely incompatible with Jagex's own wiki's copyright status, therefore no content from RS Wiki may be copied at all right now.

  4. It's called "fair use". Yes, pictures belong to Jagex. No, actual writing doesn't belong to Jagex. (Again, pics are covered by fair use.) No, fair use does not apply these cases. Critique, parody, scholarly work, or education are some of the limited cases that allow fair use. People add Jagex's images to their websites because it makes it look better and generates traffic. Jagex allows that for their own reasons (good business sense most likely). You're half right, but half wrong. There's no requirement for it to be any of the things you mentioned above, so long as the original commercial purpose of the image is preserved; that is, I'm not allowed to use the image in a way that would replace its original purpose. The rationale for using non-free images is that first and foremost, there is no free alternative available. Unless Jagex release a load of images into the public domain or under a CC non-commercial license, it's hard to argue that there's a free alternative available to fansites. Secondly, you need to be able to argue that without using the non-free image in the work, the reader's understanding of the work's subject would be greatly undermined. For a RuneScape example, it's very easy to argue that for an article on Jad which talks about his attack animations and how they are predicted, an image of Jad and his attack animations is needed for the reader to gain a comprehensive understanding of the article's subject. This is known as contextual significance--you're right in saying it has to be more than 'making the article look better', but for RS Wiki and other fansites it is about more than that already. Thirdly, copyrighted material published under the fair use clause has to be used minimally. I'm not allowed to publish twenty images of Jad's ranged attack, when one would suffice. There's a number of other criteria as well but mostly it's common sense (describe the rationale, be mindful of where it's published etc.). Even if Jagex didn't like it, some of the images (not all, admittedly) meet the fair use clause.
  5. Well, no. They can take it, just like people take stuff from Wikipedia all the time, but only under certain conditions. Tip.It is different in that content on Tip.It is protected by commercial copyright. That's where RS Wiki and fansites differ--I didn't share a CC license so I could work as a Crew member, I just gave my content to them under their copyright.
  6. Yeah, I was going to mention this. As soon as an editor on RS Wiki hits "Submit", their content has been 'given' to RS Wiki subject to a CC-BY-SA license. However, one of the conditions of said license is that although third parties are free to use whatever the license is for, the original author(s) must be accredited in any subsequent versions. Another condition (the Share-Alike part) means that if the content is used elsewhere, it must be released under the same CC-BY-SA license as the original work. Well firstly, Jagex's Wiki does not allow authors and contributors to be named, therefore there is no means to credit someone else's work. Secondly, everything submitted to Jagex is protected under commercial copyright, therefore they're not publishing the information under SA terms. Simply put, unless Jagex change the copyright status of information on their website, and until they provide a way of naming a work's original creators, they cannot either themselves copy information from RS Wiki, or allow others to copy information to their website on their behalf, and if RS Wiki found a case of plagiarism, Jagex are legally obliged to remove it immediately.
  7. Whoa, stop there. It wasn't Jagex who forced this issue. Ken knew full well what would happen if he dealt with his issues the way he did, yet you're still blaming Jagex for not coping with the situation properly? I'm sorry, but if he made that thread on an alternative account, Jagex wouldn't have had to do anything at all. I'm in disbelief that you're still trying to pin Jagex for this one when it Ken who did wrong.
  8. Might actually be tempted to go if that happens. If only for the music.
  9. That's a bit presumptuous, don't you think? How do you know British players don't want a trip to New York, and vice versa?
  10. Jagex never claimed that bots would not return. They've made it quite clear up until this point that fighting bots will be an ongoing objective. Therefore, I don't see why there's so much surprise about bots--a tiny minority compared to how many there were before--returning. I'd also take up Merc's point... it is very difficult to identify something with that much certainty over the Internet when you can't actually see who's on the other end of the computer. Unbalanced trade still exists, and humans will still participate in RWT.
  11. If I go into my workplace tomorrow and start bad mouthing the other staff members to my work's customers, under what specific employment law would you argue my boss shouldn't take my job away? If you're wearing someone else's uniform, whether you get paid for it or not, you do your hardest to represent that uniform in a positive way. As has been said, there was nothing stopping him from making that thread on an alternative account where his modship wouldn't have been called into question.
  12. Whilst it's useful to know this, especially for herblore training, this is really old news I'm afraid. The log out clock reset trick has been known for some time.
  13. You're right in that subsequent versions haven't featured casinos, however it was only in Europe that these measures were taken, probably in response to tighter legislation from the EU on gambling. It wasn't the GBA games either, it was between Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, which featured slot machines, and Pokemon Platinum which did not. Then again, Jagex are obviously a European-based company. But as said, I'm not even sure GameFreak were actually sued.
  14. There's a few studies currently ongoing into the impact of online games and Internet usage in general on addictions. Given an addiction is a mental health problem in its own right, it could be interesting to see the conclusions of those studies. Of course, that applies to online FPS games and Facebook as well as RuneScape, but if a 'substance' is found to be particularly risky, we all know what usually happens to it. Look at the scene surrounding so-called "legal highs" right now for an example. I wonder if in twenty years time, we'll start to treat social networking and video gaming as seriously as we do cocaine and heroin.
  15. Although I think RuneScape needs to become less of a contest of "He who spends most time wins", I would be hesitant to add anything in-game that either explicitly or implicity gave a player a certain advantage over those who cannot pay as much. Spending real life money on making crops grow instantly and protecting them from death would generate a ridiculously high profit rate in-game and could easily be seen as Real World Trading. If that's the path Jagex chose to follow, then I don't see why botting is such a crime. Thankfully, we're only arguing this as a hypothetical scenario.
  16. Conclusion: Children = Dogs. Nice.
  17. I'd estimate that about a third of my work for Wikipedia has been spent dealing with vandals or people who add content that is against its guidelines, and therefore needs removing. I know people on there who spend their entire time on Wikipedia dealing with said nuisances, and as such they can't contribute meaningfully to article improvement. It's nice to imagine an altruistic world where everyone does want to help each other by collating their knowledge and sharing it with everyone else, however, I know from personal experience that it takes one *hell* of a lot of work to do that successfully without others ruining it back down again. At least on Wikipedia, I can fall back on WP:V to remove incorrect/contentious content, or WP:NOTE for stuff that's completely useless, and if that fails, I can just get someone else to back me up through WP:Consensus. I would hate to imagine dealing with the same issues on this new RS Wiki, because I know if I tried to fix whatever's wrong, some other idiot will just wreck it again. If I'm giving my time to help other players, I should do it in the knowledge that the organisation (Jagex in this case) is backing up the work I do and protecting it from people who want to destroy my efforts.
  18. What if the information they're releasing isn't plain wrong, but still highly contentious? Like stating that CLS > CR? That's not a plainly wrong statement, it's contentious. Chaotic rapier is better than the longsword at most things, but the longsword still has its uses. Depending on context, the direction of that arrow changes. What do you do then? Another example would be stating that chinchompas give 250K ranged xp/hr. At what levels... with what methods... using what equipment... on what monsters?
  19. * Black salamander is fine, any less is unreasonably ineffective. No mention of tars though, so I'll guess he's slapping the brothers with it instead of torching them. * I've not seen anyone use Guthans inside Barrows for about three years. Try EE? * I don't know how he's getting through that many prayer potions, each of which is currently about 7K each. It takes me one sip to deal with Karil, and one in case of a Dharok tunnel. So half a pot at most per chest for 3.5K cost. (Come to think of it, he's meleeing Ahrim. That might be where) * Ring of wealth... just... no. Archer ring (i) if using sallies/crossbow, even explorer ring would be better for a +1 prayer boost versus Karil. I'm not sure why being high levelled makes any difference to a ROW either. * Special attack weapon should be, as said, EE if you need healing. Korasi's isn't a bad choice for an offensive weapon but I'd rather claw Karil. * Ahrim should be ranged in black dhides or void ranged if possible. That's a positive magic defence bonus right there. But apart from those flaws, and the lack of third-person perspective, let's give it a good score. And this is the problem with a Wiki that can't back up what it says with evidence. Also, in the text that Jagex themselves wrote... an ectophail is a short walk away from Barrows? Try Drakan's medallion, which if you go to Burgh de Rott to bank is a completely free and reuseable teleport which transports you right to the Barrows' front door. I've also not used an ectophail as a one-click teleport since Construction was released and we got home teletabs. I mean, to be fair, Construction was only released just over five years ago so I can understand people might not have caught up yet.
  20. This is the only major error I've seen in this update. I'm not sure why they tried fixing the old arrows, but at least raise the split-off text so it falls above the new arrows. I don't really Want to type My RuneScape Messages like This
  21. I agree, if Jagex actually has more plans for the in-field pop ups (like, viewing stats of items like in other games) I think that'd be a great step forward. The website is pretty but the functionality is nerfed. =\ Hard to find buttons. or maybe they're just gone. Still hard to navigate too. Navigation is a bit of a problem, but then it always is whenever a website is renovated. I'm prepared to give it some time to see if I can get used to it first, and if I still can't, then it is probably more of a problem their end. The hiscores need shrinking again... I'm not sure why they've put the names of the skills underneath the icons since that's what the icons are there for in the first place. But generally, there's nothing seriously wrong with this update. If people are complaining about a one-pixel border around the XP counter, then I say that's a job pretty well done. Also, good job on making a CSB one-clickable. The fact that staves are unequipped by a 2h before a CSB isn't so much of an issue now and it makes it much easier to switch into surges.
  22. Hardly anyone posts about what Jagex does right... but I'll do it here. The website looks incredible compared to its predecessor and I've got no real complains with the new interface. It looks very nice, and the new "in-field" pop-ups are quite useful. Perhaps I'm being sycophantic though.
  23. I'm not sure they'll release a whole new game, but perhaps make a downloadable version of the game we currently have so they can do more with it in the future.
  24. Per day, not forever. But given inflation is soaring due to the bot nuke, 25K doesn't really buy a whole lot.
  25. Stop turning anecdotal observations into statistically verified trends.
