  1. Writing gadgets for Vista was one of the first things I did that had something to do with programming. I wrote these really useless things that did pretty much nothing. [/offtopic] I'd try it if I was still on Windows...
  2. Except I interpret the comment as "Earth: something that shatters news reporters" (referring to the Fox News comment above). Well played, dsavi_x4. =D> Well played. Earth-shattering newspeople!

    Today...

Went to the dentist today. I have one small hole, enough that it needs to be drilled though. It went a bit like this: (Dentist is calling things out to assistant who is writing things up on the computer, says something about the start of a hole, lifts her hand out of my gaping mouth) Me: There are no real holes, right? Dentist: There is one hole in this (Points to tooth) tooth. Me: Big enough to need drilling? Dentist: Yep. Me: (Is suddenly quite uncomfortable) I heard about this kind of water drill that you can use without the need for anesthesia, do you have that? Dentist: Yes, we have water drills. Me: So I wouldn't need anesthesia? Dentist: If you don't want it we don't have to give it to you. That's not exactly what I was thinking. So yeah. I've never gotten drilled before (That's what she said), and the chances are high that novacaine doesn't actually work on me (As it doesn't work on my mom), so does anyone know how likely it is that a place like this would have a real water drill as described here? Also has anyone had drilling done without local anesthetic?
  4. Displaying gender is more informative, but people might get into the habit of looking at age and judging on that. So maybe gender, but not age.
  5. Yay, more shock news! People are oversensitive in America, that's really stupid, they don't have any common sense and all the rest of it. [/topic] (Unless you count everyone else that will say the same thing or yell at me) :-)
  6. I so beat you to that. You're off by days.
  7. More than you are probably willing to pay. Well, if you want the real (Pro) version anyway it's like $600ish. There's a n00b version of it, ($75 or so) but personally I'd stick with something free. N00b versions of anything (Like Photoshop Elements) don't feel like honest products to me. I mean, there are programs like Cinelerra which are free but complete overkill, even for most stuff I do.
  8. Yeah, I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a suit. Also, I just found this topic again, still sums up my opinions on the matter pretty much.
  9. Oh, yeah. Stupid government. I've changed my mind now.
  10. Just saw this quote: "I like taxes. With them I buy civilization." True indeed.
  11. What am I going to do? I can't live without those 1.26 microseconds or whatever it was! Earth-shattering news people.
  12. Wait, if you want to do any kind of video editing at all why would you get a "discrete" graphics card? Few graphics cards are a lot more than discrete nowadays anyway. Also, it's not hard at all to get a computer to work with 1080p video. You just have to use the right software and know what you're doing. Dude. He's making capture card videos. I think Windows Movie Maker/iMovie would do more than he wants to do anyway.
  13. You probably got a message that said "Driver Error"? When one person gets that everyone gets that, as it is a server side issue and nothing wrong with your browser or system. It seems to me that the forum has been down quite a bit lately.
  14. ^ Linux before Ubuntu was indeed like that, but you'd be hard pressed to not call Ubuntu a desktop operating system. PiTiVi for more basic editing (PiTiVi will come with 10.04 this spring, which says something about ease of use I think) and Blender for more advanced editing.
  15. Illinois rocks. They've got the Sears tower. Chicago is an amazing city. (I know that it's called the Willis tower now, but the name will never stick and I don't want it to.)
  16. I have kind of an interesting perspective on this- I moved to Finland from America, went to a school in English where Finnish was the other dominant language, and then moved into a Swedish school with zero experience in the language. No lessons, no nothing. What makes me wonder, though, is why obligatory Finnish in Swedish schools never creates much discussion. Most of the students have a rudimentary grip on it already, and can make their way around in it if they must. Most Finnish people I know of my age wouldn't- And couldn't- speak Swedish pretty much at all. If they go to Sweden they ask for service in English. This is mostly because, in my opinion, of the horrible Swedish education offered in schools here. It's not because Swedish is hard- English is harder and there's no problem or argument about learning that, is there? It's the quality of the education. Consider this: When I moved into a Swedish school, my friends continued going to an English school, where the Swedish teacher is known to be bad. In a year I could speak Swedish fluently. I met my friend from that school around Christmas time last year, and he could hardly speak anything. The solution could be to do the same as I did, to have schooling fully in Swedish for a year with the exception of English and Finnish classes, and then do the reverse. Sort of an extreme immersion-style learning system, because honestly, no matter how many years of classes you take, nothing makes you scramble to learn a language like the pressure I felt in the first year of that school. If you don't mind me asking, are you Finlandssvensk? "With every language you learn/know, you are one person more". Kind of a rough translation. Why sign language? :P I wouldn't personally consider it that useful, or even really an entirely language altogether. It is an entire language, complete with its own vocabulary and grammar. It could be very useful if you're looking for a job working with disabled people or in education. More useful than you might think.
  17. Same here. Those freaking cheesehead packer-backers.
  18. Ubuntu has become incredibly easy, even for novices. But here's the thing: He has never owned a Mac, and is more than willing to try that out, he's even considering spending money- And the OS X interface is equally, if not more different to Windows than that of Ubuntu. Installing Java and graphics drivers is incredibly trivial on Ubuntu nowadays, and I know that I will put my "money" where my mouth is if he tries it out and runs into problems.
  19. Linux, of course. The operating system costs less (i.e. no cost at all) and can do everything you listed.
  20. WOOO MINNESOTA! Yeah! But of all people to say that, why you? Dude, everyone hates you. And you are inherently wrong. Did you not know that or something?
  21. I avoid those "Head First" things because they look so stupid. You can actually tell a lot about the contents of a technical book by its cover, I've found, as the publishing companies that don't bother to hire a graphic designer are usually the ones that don't pay much attention to the quality of the book. Especially the ones that try stupid things with the cover, like some silly version of a serif font with a fisheye closeup of a guy smiling.
  22. Yes, but it enables you to write the code that resets the properties only once- and invoke it in one line of code. Also, nesting functions isn't nearly as readable as just one function call.
  23. That seems like a pretty roundabout way of doing it IMO... clone methods are easy to write and make for more readable code.
  24. Lol, we've been using it actively since like early-mid '08.
