#3 of the new ones could be better if it was taken more uniformly, with the products in a grid. A longer focal length shot taken from lower plus maybe barrel distortion correction could make that really good. It's quite good as it is though.

You forgot perspective- Your drawings are all orthographic. Other than that the corners of the Macbook are more rounded than they should be, it works pretty good otherwise.

:thumbup: Also, if you eventually know Java and PHP, Python will come naturally. The most difficult thing in C, for me anyway, was pointers. There's this great guide, I'll have to look for it later.

I've never used it myself, but MinGW is the standard open source C/C++ compiler for Windows. C is a minimalistic but very powerful programming language that is used for a huge number of things, including a large amount of the Linux kernel, many heavy programs, etc.- Basically if you want to create a serious program, C (Or C++) is usually the starting point. C++ is maybe what you would call a superset of the C standard, that includes support for classes and objects like Java. Some people like that, some people prefer C's minimalism. C# is a language started by Microsoft that resembles Java. I don't know a huge amount about it other than it supports objects and classes and such and that it's less cross-platform than C/C++ (Although Linux/Mac OS X support has gotten pretty good these days with the Mono compiler). I thought you were joking about C-- until I looked it up; Suffice to say that it's nothing you need to worry about.

So Stephen Elop, Nokia CEO, is actually the 7th biggest non-institutional shareholder of Microsoft. Wow, this just reeks of an inside job. I don't care about Windows Phone 7, but I do care about Nokia. They produced some fantastic hardware in their time, and they really should have gone with Android. The combination of the two would have been beautiful. The n900 is basically a Debian box in your pocket, one of my teachers overclocked his n900 to 0.9GhZ, pretty impressive. (Using CPU frequency scaling to save battery when it wasn't needed)

Yeah but when you get an ex-Microsoft CEO what can you expect. I don't think they're killing off Meego just yet, they've said they're going to release one Meego phone this year. Some good news, though: Yesterday when the news was made public over a thousand people walked out of Nokia to show their disagreement with the change. :-D Really glad that they showed their opinion.

This is one of the best deals Microsoft ever made, but probably the worst one ever for Nokia. The problem is that nobody wants to buy WP7- Compared to how many people want Android, although if there is one company that people would buy phones with WP7 from, it is Nokia. Part of the problem is that it isn't an open platform, part of the problem is that it has Windows in the name. Pretty much what Will said. Nokia isn't good at software (Except for a few things), and they chose a software company that is sure to fail to help them. Nokia does have great hardware, but it all goes to waste if they don't have great software to run on it.

Bad news today: Ex-Microsoft Steven Elop, now Nokia CEO, and Steve Ballmer announced today that Microsoft is going into a "Strategic Alliance" with Nokia. So Nokia will be moving their phone OS to Windows Phone 7. As someone put it, two blind people are talking about colors. It has ended. It's been a nice eight years Nokia, since I got my first phone, a 3330 (A derivative of the legendary 3310), and since then I have owned sever others, a 5100, 9110i, 9210i, 6310i, and a 3110c. Good, durable, hackable phones that you charged once a week or so, were fine if you put them through the wash, and (In the case of the two smartphones on that list) allowed you to really play around. The only redeeming thing I can think of here is described very well in this Dilbert comic from a bygone age: OK this thread might be more for my own therapy than discussion value (Although I think that there might be a lot of that too). To think that I was thinking about how nice it would be to use a Nokia phone running Android just yesterday.

I, uh, think I tried running PC-BSD in a virtual machine once. It didn't work very well. Strange thing is, Mac OS X is basically FreeBSD, so it shouldn't be too hard...? You're probably not running Darwin though. Or was it OpenBSD?

I'm another fan of Microsoft Security Essentials, I use it on two of my own computers and we've got it installed on about ten more computers at the lab at school. Very efficient, you never notice it. After all, it is Microsoft- They should know how to fix their own system.

One problem- It doesn't even fit on my 20" screen. I think you're almost forced to make it fit on 1280x1024. Or maybe this is a fluid layout?

Try http://fontsquirrel.com for some seriously good web fonts, Titillium, Bebas Neue, Cantarell, PT Sans, Aller... It's got some really good stuff. E: I see that Google web fonts also has some of those.

I don't have enough time to do full critique, but I'll kind of abbreviate it. First of all, although the sites you are inspired by are very cool and flashy, they use "mystery meat navigation" and are not something that I would want to see as a client. It is a portfolio, which by definition is supposed to be different, but there are certain design and interaction elements that should be preserved no matter what page it is. About the first design: in this case I would say that it is OK to stray away from standard fonts and use images of unorthodox fonts for headings, see http://webcreme.com- It's full of them. As for the colors, I think that the colors need to be slightly more homogeneous, colors that contrast too much in lightness and/or saturation can be confusing for the eye. #2: This is one of those blah de blah interaction elements that should be preserved things. The path that the eye takes to read the different links is not logical, a zigzag path kind of breaks the dreamlike state your visitors should be in. :razz: #3: Although two color sites can be very effective, I find they should be used with care. If you don't have colors or different shades to make the website relatively conventional, I find it's best to give the website a really solid grid foundation. At the moment, I think this design feels unbalanced (Obviously towards the left), which is a bit distracting and makes the website feel incomplete. Balanced doesn't mean that everything is in the center of course. All in all I think design #1 is the most successful so far. Here's a website to confuse you.

Of course you don't want to give away your real signature that you use for legal things here. You should probably just stick with descriptions. So I'm having a problem coming up with a signature (For legal use). I really don't know where to start. Where did you come up with yours? Any ideas as to how I could come up with one? I used to use one that was really horrible, I made it up when I was like 10. Need to come up with a signature for my passport, so obviously if someone posts an idea I like I won't go shouting about it. Help is appreciated. I'm sure there's a lot of discussion to be had here too of course.

Yeah the content is really what made it look good at all in the end. I was really annoyed with the design until I put in content.
