Not really since both Zaros and Seren are ancient and we already voted for the new Seren spells and 'blessings' to be added to the existing ancient magic and curses books - so though not necessarily at launch there will be Seren content in the books that is being allowed to switch in her city.It still feels like a stretch in spite of that, though, like they're trying too hard to make it a 'hub' that replaces the rest of the game world rather than fits comfortably inside it.

On top of the fact they are making the elf city the most highly anticipated piece of content. They are ensuring its authority as the highest grade content even before its release....It still kind of strikes me as nostalgia pandering though, like they've shoved everything aside to make room for a dead storyline. Nor can I say I'm a fan of the whole "you will never have to leave this city" thing that they have going on.

Stuff like raw swordfish and yew logs? Boring, yes, but practical. TNPW give feedback or further suggestions.

According to wiki, its indeed 100% bonus in 5 days, for VIP members. I just got both the aura and the necklace on a regular subscription, so I'd assume it'll be for everyone.

Giant spider boss?

Try the first one first. The HP reduction mechanic is only in the second (and Demon's Souls, I think?), and both are less about number grinding and more about tweaking your playstyle until things are less hard.
