CERN Experiment Indicates Faster-Than-Light neutrinos
Range_This11 replied to kamykazee's topic in Off-Topic
If the aim of these physicists was to bring Einstein's theories crumbling down, then they are going to do everything it takes to do that. The amount of fame, funding, awards, etc that they will now receive as a result will be astounding. Career-wise, they are completely set. It would be a mistake to assume that scientists are not human or incapable of skewing experiments to get what they want. I'm not saying the results are bogus, but there needs to be very extensive testing before we proclaim that Einstein's work is dead because these discoveries can completely change the way that we understand basic laws of nature---including gravity. That is not something to be throwing around lightly. -
Yes you should, history is important! But why? That is a completely serious question. I want to become a history professor, I love it to death, but I don't know how I could justify teaching it in relevance to the real world. You know, the classic "When are we ever going to use this?" question. I'm in my fourth year as a history major and writing my thesis, so by this time in my academic career I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to history....hopefully. I'm not going to say that "history repeats itself," because that is utter b.s., but there are clues from the past that can help us make decisions about the present. It is foolish and short-sighted to think that modern society is occurring in a vacuum. In other words, there are forces both historic and contemporary that influence decisions we make as a society and ignoring them is what allows us to make similar mistakes that have been made in the past. Also, in my eyes there are two types of historians. The first kind is the one that enjoys studying battles, dates, facts, medieval armor--what I like to call the real nuts and bolts of history. The other is the type that takes those same events, people, battles, etc. and tries to craft a cohesive (a Hegelian model of history) thread of influence throughout history. Asking questions like "Why did this group of people attack this group?" or "What does public torture say about the society that both allows it and views it willingly?" Those are relatively simple questions, but you get the idea. My area of expertise is twentieth-century U.S. Intellectual history. I study the ideas, philosophies, thoughts, and social theories of people. In my eyes, this is where the real history occurs because the everyday lives of people is what affects their thoughts about how society should (or could) be governed. If we ignore the past, we ruin the future.

Today is the beginning of the 10th year of the war in Afghanistan.

I think a safer rule of thumb would be stop making the same mess over and over again. A ten year war that produces no results is utter stupidity especially given its cost. -

Colossal waste of money. The amount of corruption in the new "democracy" there is astounding and we could spend another ten years there without the situation getting any better. Just leave already, it's too expensive. -
The Lions can't keep relying on 2nd half comebacks if they want to have a successful season.

Good call on the Carlin. His entire "You Are All Diseased" stand-up is gold if you want to know some things that are really pissing him off.

Right, like when he crumbled under pressure in this game. Vick's alleged crumbling had a lot to do with the patchwork O Line, which has been improved considerable. Reid has put together a Super Bowl caliber team, but McNabb choked hard (something Vick won't do) along with a few other key guys. Our defense has improved drastically, with some of the best players in the league. Not only that but we have a top 5 QB and a line to protect him, one of the best WRs out there and a running core to be feared. Like I said before, Eagles going all the way. So, just to go over things again. The Redskins are atop the NFC East at 3-1 and the Eagles--in the same division--have lost their last three to go to 1-3 with their only win coming against the lowly Rams. I know it's only four games into the season, but it's probably not a good start for a team that plans on "going all the way." By the way, my Packers are 4-0.

The sheer stupidity of college kids is starting to wear me down. Most students can't describe anything without using "like" or "you know" four times in one sentence. Call me elitist, but the democratization of higher education has just empowered more stupid people to think they are intelligent.

18.5 miles on the stationary in one hour today. Go big or go home.

I know this isn't directly related to the question of whether interracial relationships are right or wrong, but it's something interesting nonetheless. PBS's Sorting People Most of this world is just going to end up a shade of light brown, give it 300 years. Already we are seeing the decline of "race" (should be referred to as "ethnicity", not race) across the globe--especially here in America. Self-identification on ballots, surveys, and job applications is becoming nearly impossible for some people, most of whom I would guess are products of interracial relationships somewhere in their ancestry. As far as interracial relationships go, I don't have a problem with them. I think the biggest problem people have with interracial relationships is their fear of another person's skin color and the personality or character traits commonly associated with that skin color; and most of the time that only comes from not understanding the other person. Most people are afraid of what they don't know or understand: "that person looks weird!" or "that person talks differently than I do!" When you break it down, the only differences between people are how they were raised and what environment they were raised in. Anyways, I digress. I think those who do not approve of interracial relationships are either very entrenched in traditional relationship notions or are projecting their own fears or misunderstandings on other people. As always, a great film that pokes fun at the ignorance of those who disagree with interracial relationships is the classic Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967).

I got a call from work that said I didn't have to come for my shift tonight. Hoooooray, now I get more time to read :P
-
I got nine hours of sleep last night. I haven't had more than four a night for the past week I've been so busy. It felt amazing. Oh, and I started working out again on the stationary bike which also feels amazing.

Not my biggest concern, no, but it still sucks when I'm stuck in the library Thursday-Saturday nights instead of going out with my friends. I can't even go out with them sober, every second of spare time is spent reading. Maybe I should just perfect reading and drinking.
-
School is dominating me right now. I just had a 600 page reading week plus 10 pages of writing. I don't even have time to get drunk anymore. Gahh <_<

Check it.

I received the drumset part for our percussion ensemble's tribute to John Bonham. Hell yeah :shades:

Michele Bachmann is even worse. Try being from her home district. Ugh. It's funny though, no matter how many times she gives speeches or goes to parades around here, she NEVER visits the university

A sport where contact occurs and a contact sport are two completely different things.

Non-contact sports are hilarious, anytime anyone gets bumped it's the end of the god damn world.

I'm writing a paper on reason vs. authority for the next ~5 hours or so then going out for dollar taps and 25 cent tacos. Happy Thursday

I haven't been on the forums in awhile. I started classes for my final year of undergrad today. I'm gonna be a library rat all damn year.

Today I finally got my key for the drum set studio on campus. I'm going to spend a lot of hours in that sucker :shades:

I finally finished all my shopping for my apartment just in time for Sunday Funday. Cheers

I might try Goldschlager, as it's basically the same thing, but actually available. Never again. Never. At least I got everything into the garbage. Gold flakes and all? Goldschlager was one of the first things I ever had to drink. My buddy's Dad had a bottle of it and it was nassssssty.
