Actually... If you'd like to quote wikipedia... You'll see my description is, while putting into layman's terms, rather accurate :-s But to the subject at hand, please?

Should i be worried ABOUT A KEYLOGGER?
mastermule52 replied to Dragon-xiv's topic in Tech and Computers
If I get a laptop, I'll be getting a mac. I don't want to give up the ability to play Oblivion so I wouldn't get rid of my desktop. But because mac OS uses a unix backend, and has Java, javac, and gcc, that's everything I need bar mIRC (which there's plenty of alternatives to.) -
Yes, a pirated copy of WinXP will still have it's system repair features. I would assume that while your current install of WinXP is probably corrupted (one of the files must have gone haywire,) physical damage to the disc is rather unlikely. If it is, you'll be needing a new disc - it isn't something that can be repaired. You see, a hard drive consists of many very thin layers of film stacked on top of each other. On these films are millions of small metal fragments, which get flipped up or down (to represent the ones and zeros.) Damage to the disk happens when these fragments come loose. Obviously, that's not repairable. But what you're describing happens to me every couple of months as well - sometimes you just install something that doesn't go properly. Chances are you can simply "repair" and it will restore the file you need. If you aren't so lucky, you should be able to do a re-install over the old one without TOO much difficulty. [sarcasm]And there's always format c: ;-)[/sarcasm]

Why does my rs brower always glitch out?
mastermule52 replied to runekille156's topic in Tech and Computers
If for some reason that doesn't work, you could manually select it when at the detail select screen. :-) And to make things easier, do what I do : never close the RS client ;-) -

To the off topic post above this (assuming no one else posts in the next few minutes) : It is not moderator specific, nor is it "now-a-days." People have been questioning the decisions and methods of those above them for thousands of years. And since the earliest days of message boards, which I probably was exposed to too early (thanks big bro!) there have been disagreements with the mods and users over how the board should be run. Which brings me to the point. Engorgedpit, who (him?)self admits having a vast amount of experience on message boards (more than I by a couple of years, but comparable) should know that this is how boards operate. I admit you do not seem to be the average hell-raising punk. You use proper grammar (from what I recall) and come off as a more mature person. I can tell you I felt very much the same thing you are feeling now (see this post.) But, and this is especially true in THIS section, we have to keep in mind the humanity of the crew and their limited (and as far as I know, unpaid, but I could be wrong on that...) resources, of which time is one of the most important. Using that avatar post as an example. The user posting that said something along the lines of "even 10k would be helpful" - and indeed it would. But with almost 150k users, at 2k EXTRA per avatar, that's up to 300Mb more server space... for avatars... Now of course, not everyone has an avatar, but when you have to pay for server space, even a fraction of that can begin to add up. If you DID have something worthwhile to add, such as a possible solution that works for both users and administrators, you would be better off putting it on a new thread where the vibe wouldn't be tainted by a lesser-quality idea. And as long as it was unique and reasonable, I doubt it would be locked (unless it was found to not be plausible, but even then it wouldn't be locked probably.) From what I can tell the other post was locked because the proverbial "dead horse" was being beaten. This post was a little more long winded than I intended. And for the record, I went about 4 months before I started posting on the forums here. ;-)

The herbs at Chaos Druids make for some good cash, and easy training. Easy to 3-item it down there too, so if someone gets you you don't lose anything.

Reporting offensive Runescape usernames?
mastermule52 replied to Acero Frio's topic in Help and Advice
A number of player mods have told me what they do for this: They say "nice RSN" and then report the player, so JaGeX knows you're reporting the username itself, not neccessarily the player's actions. -
With the new Karamja ... I forget the name... Where you run around and do a bunch of errands lol... You get a pair of gloves that make items on Karamja worth more. Both gold and tokkul prices go up when wearing the gloves (notice the drop in fury prices?)

Brilliant. Imagine having a checkout counter where you set your items on the counter, it scans them, set your card down, it charges it, and out you go. That'd be rather hardcore. -
Not being a user of IE very often, I'm out on a whim here, but did you update anything, or allow something to change any settings, that might prevent IE from opening Java applets? Also, try opening the world map (it should launch in an IE window.) If it works, the problem is probably not in Java itself. There's another option and that would be to delete the files in C:\WINDOWS\.file_store_32 if you're on WinXP or C:\WINNT\.file_store_32 if you're on Win2k This is where JaGeX stores RuneScape locally on your comp. Perhaps removing that will force it to update itself? It has worked for me in the past. DON'T FORGET the . it's dot file underscore store underscore 32 ... You might not be able to access it by clicking it in a folder-browse .. you may have to copy the filepath directly. NOTE: You will have to download the ENTIRE new game, like you're on a new PC. Not that big, but still. Just so you know.

I've been on a lot of message boards in my day. The mods here do a rather swell job of controlling the spam and useless threads, given the size of the board, and I would have to agree this is a rather minor issue. I see where you're coming from about the whole "new users" thing, but being new to TIF is one thing, being new to forums in general is another. Almost all forums (especially of this size) have the problem of people who don't search before they post. A little reminder that "hey - we actually look for that on these boards" tells the user "oh, I guess I really do have to search before I post." Given the (estimated) average age of a lot of the users here, there's a chance it's their first message board, but there's no need to beat around the bush. If WE as the community do to searching for them and post a link, they learn "oh, I don't need to search - if it already exists, they'll link me." If you don't give them a link, they learn to search for themselves, preventing future issues. Not that I've been there, done that, got the tee-shirt ;-)

Best Graphics card to get on a budget?
mastermule52 replied to Predator's topic in Tech and Computers
By seeing the links, I see warranties provided by the manufacturers for the products. It would seem foolish of them to warranty something they do not designate the settings for. Therefore I can only conclude that while it is higher than normal, it is not over clocked, despite whatever advertising techniques tiger direct uses to sell its cards. ;-) Not to say it's not an awesome card, because it is, and it's going to perform very well most likely - just be careful not to deceive yourself when shopping around. :-) -
Best Graphics card to get on a budget?
mastermule52 replied to Predator's topic in Tech and Computers
All cards are "pre-overclocked" - in the past, they pushed them to what they knew was safe, and if you wanted to risk it you could. Nowadays, they STILL push it to what they know is safe, they're just much better at knowing what's safe. -
Couple comments offtopic before I get on topic: Java isn't a cpu intensive program. RuneScape is. ;-) Don't confuse the two. Second, why "temporarily" remove the cover? :P I've moved between 4 different living locations since I last had a cover on my comp - I found it when I got back to my apartment :P anyway... on topic Do you have any REALLY gpu intensive games? that's Gpu (graphics) so if you have... Oblivion? Or another game that uses intense graphics? what happens then. Another thing is does it SHUT OFF or RESTART - they often have different causes. Not to jump to conclusions but if it's restarting it's quite possibly a memory error (which if taking it out, blowing it out and putting it back in securely doesn't fix you'd be looking at needing new RAM - but let's not jump to conclusions.) When it starts up, make sure it does a full POST and says "blah blah mem OK" when it starts up.

An amazing new technology, Microsoft Surface
mastermule52 replied to madcap_laughs's topic in Tech and Computers
The difference is the wireless interactivity. Putting a device in proximity to the surface, having the two connect to eachother and exchange their information. It's quite simple when abstracted, and actually the first m$ product I've seen in a while that's rather innovative. And don't worry about cost. Everything that we now get very cheap was expensive when it first came out. -
Risk of death? :S Unplug the batteries when you change it - there will be no risk of death. No power = no death.

to extend your windows desktop without actually seeing it you can use the following key sequence: right click on what desktop you have click properties wait a moment to ensure the entire thing loads - it will be off screen, so you won't know for sure, so give it a few seconds. [shift]+[tab] [left arrow] x 4 [tab] [tab] [2] [tab] x 3 [space] [tab] x 11 [space] wait a moment you should see on both monitors now.

Run it in admin mode :P

Another option would be to make a runescape-only screen name on the different services, and use something like meebo to log in. It doesn't have file transfer capabilites, so the only way they could get your password through meebo is if you tell them. The site is legit, there are many many credible sources to confirm this.

Is there something else running on your machine that could be using your cpu? Also, one of simplest ways to fix problems like this (if they're one time deals) is to restart if you're on a Windows machine. It really shouldn't help at all, and shouldn't be a standard troubleshooting practice, but it does end up helping a lot. So if you haven't tried restarting, you might want to give it a shot. Otherwise, keep an eye on your task manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC on most windows machines)

Help! Help! Need Advice About Windows Vista
mastermule52 replied to Nacs16's topic in Tech and Computers
My first instinct says "nooo don't do it" But, I will say the average user's experience isn't that bad on Vista. Yes there are a lot of bugs, but there are in Windows XP as well (and for that matter, ANY operating system.) However, most of the bugs will only be found by a few people. Of course, those few people will say "I found a bug that gave me a really hard time!!" and they'll be upset about it, but the chances of running to too many major problems are rather low. Besides - cool people only need Java and a web browser (h) (oh and mIRC) -
What can be the problem with my computer - CPU checked
mastermule52 replied to Kill_Life's topic in Tech and Computers
It can't. However: some have options to shut down your computer when the scan is finished. You also could find the estimated time to scan, give yourself a little extra leeway time, and use a timed-shutdown to turn your computer off. Example: Say you time your scan and it takes 2 hours. (long time, but this is just an example. You should be able to use a command, in a dos prompt (click start, click run, type "cmd" and press enter) like this to shut it down: tsshutdn 7200 /powerdown This will look like: This will pop up a screen saying "System will shut down in 7200 seconds" - Go ahead and start your scan, and go to sleep :-) You can of course adjust the time however you need. Hope this helps keep your computer safe, and electricity bill low! :D -
The second idea sounds interesting; sort of like a time capsule. The first idea I would have to disagree with. First off, you would have to draw the line somewhere. Those who are "just shy" of that line would be rather upset. So you can't have any definitive line. This means it would probably be filled with two sets of people - "new timers" who want to "act cool" and "old timers" who probably would be a little snooty about their new status. And let's not mention the new timers that act like old timers. Meanwhile, the people who would be worthy of the respect that an "old timer" should receive would be out on the rest of the forum making worth while posts, avoiding the flame wars. In theory, a good idea. In practice, not so hot. :P
