  1. Today for dinner I had pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon. Pork. Wrapped in [bleep]ing bacon. That was the best damn thing I've had in ages. I realize this doesn't help you looking for a low carb meal ( ) but it was so good I had to say something about it.
  2. I really, really, really, really wish people would stop trying to compare the two. It's comparing apples to oranges, or rather, a ripe apple to an onion that has been sitting out in the sun and started sprouting little white hairs. Harry Potter is the apple. It's an original take on classic concepts with a solid foundation of good characters and plot, tied together by solid prose--not exceptional, but it gets the job done without getting obnoxiously in your face. Twilight is the onion. It's an attempt at an original take at a classic concept that instead rapes it by giving vampires sparkling skin and a tendency to feed on animals so they don't have to feed on humans. The characters are not characters but puppets, with Meyer pulling the strings as they act out her fantasies of having an "epic romance" with a sparkling super-powered dude--for really, calling them vampires is pointless. Add random contrived plots to give the books a false veneer of actually having a point beyond being drawn-out cuddle fests, and you have an open, bleeding sore on the face of contemporary fiction. So instead of trying to compare Harry Potter to Twilight, throw the damn onion out.
  3. First thing I thought of was the Aerosmith song. Love In An Elevator. Yeah.

Haha, I just had a thought that if I want some good books to read I should look into all the ones referenced in Lost. The most recent one being Everything That Rises Must Converge by Flannery O'Connor. Others include The Stand (which I've read, great book), Catch-22, Alice in Wonderland, Turn of the Screw, Our Mutual Friend ([bleep]ens ), Of Mice and Men (also read), and a ton of others. That is starting to sound like a really good idea as I sit here typing it  EDIT: Full list of references from the show: http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Literary_references Brave New World is strange. I'm now weirded out by the word "pneumatic."
  5. Currently addicted to Fire Emblem again after getting my hands on Shadow Dragon. Only complaint is that the characters all seem a bit sucky (probably just in comparison to RD where all the stat caps are in the 30s lol) and the story is absolutely sparse compared to the other games. Only on Chapter 10 though. Also got both Pokemon Diamond and Platinum and plan on getting in to those after I'm through with FE. And Phantom Hourglass. And maybe Chrono Trigger.

The Pendragon books are some of the best YA novels out there. I would much rather people read Pendragon than Inheritance. Or Twilight. Or even a lot of adult fiction.

NEW THOUGHT. Lidelof/Cuse have remarked on the fact that the compass has no origin (Richard gave it to Locke, who then gave it to Richard in 1954, who then gave it to time-traveling Locke in 2007), but that also means that the idea of Locke being the leader of the Others has no origin. And if the Locke we've been with since he "rose from the dead" isn't actually Locke, the impersonator had to know about the whole time-loop thing. Maybe that was the "loophole?"

That was a hell of a final scene. Jacob and the other dude were talking in the 1800s, not 1600s. Assuming the ship out there was the Black Rock. It was a nineteenth century slave ship. That also means the statue was whole less than 200 years ago, so something pretty significant happened to blast all of it away except Jacob's foot. It couldn't have been the Incident as you would be able to see it from the Orchid. I doubt it, he seemed pretty surprised when Ben told him about that. I agree that Locke, as much as I don't want him to be dead, is probably dead and never did come back to life. And now that I think about it, I doubt the nuke went off. I pretty much discard the notion that anything they did was an actual change, and since the Swan wasn't in the middle of a nuclear wasteland it's very probable that the magnetic energy was released before Juliet managed to detonate the bomb. Which could potentially save her (and everyone else) if it does something wacky like it did in season 2.

Finished the final Pendragon book today. I'll wait to pass a more critical judgment until my mind has gotten past thinking "That was [bleep]ing epic."

SEASON FINALE TONIGHT ARGRLSBLRLNOFBHGTF I can't wait to see how this one stacks up against the others. Season 3 finale is my favorite by far, but I think this season has become my favorite over season 3, so who knows?
  11. :| Not a fan of Van Halen at all. Nor of having to buy brand new games again and again.
  12. YES! ALSO, I TOO NEED NEW PANTS.

From what I've read of Brave New World just skimming, I see a lot of that as the difference between products of two different centuries. But I agree with you; even by the standards of the times, Frankenstein is extremely overwritten in some parts. There was a page or two where Victor is talking about his marriage to Elizabeth, and I must have read the word "union" in that context ten times. And you can only elucidate so much about the themes before they get tiring. Still, those themes are very thought-provoking and the application is sound. And for what it's worth it was Shelley's debut.

To this day the only book I have started but not finished is The Da Vinci Code. The movie was at least entertaining but the book . . . Jesus. I also had a quick read from the first book of that Cherub thing people were spazzing about on the last page. It was terrible. The dude needs an editor, a few English classes, and a more interesting premise. Almost done with Frankenstein. Brave New World is next on the list for English class.

I agree, once again Ben's expression sold the whole thing. Plus throughout the episode Ben and Richard were like "WTF is going on" while Locke took control. "I think John Locke is going to be trouble." "Why do you think I tried to kill him?"
  16. What, exactly, would have made the film "entertaining" as you define it?
  17. I've read several books with strong female leads. William Nicholson's Wind on Fire trilogy stands out; the two main characters are twin brother and sister. The sister is the more interesting of the two. As an offhand comment those books give me more of a sense of surrealism than The Dark Tower for some reason. Speaking of Stephen King, Frannie and Nadine from The Stand are pretty prominent. Although they both have their links to sex (Nadine's who plot revolves around losing her virginity . . .) they aren't badly done. And there's the 100+year-old Mother Abigail. I never liked her but still.

I still think Faraday was right the first time. Whatever happened, happened. Now he's planted the idea that they can change the future and they'll probably just end up bringing it about instead. Hell, maybe he even knew it. I didn't think Desmond was actually injured though, it looked like his groceries (maybe a milk jug) stopped it. That was a bit unexpected.

Honestly I'm relieved that the finale was actually pretty good. Although I don't understand how Sylar was flying. The only people that we know can fly are Nathan and Claire's ex from season 2. Unless he was levitating himself with telekinesis, but that would be lame. And the whole forcing Sylar to take on Nathan's identity is just creepy to the extreme. Not to mention unnecessary. It could potentially be a pretty good commentary on morality (Mrs. Petrelli's expression at the end was priceless) but really there was no need for it in the first place. Matt could have just mind-controlled Sylar until he spoke with the President as Nathan and then he could have been assassinated or something. Angela never struck me as someone who would ignore practicality for keeping a mockery of her son alive. PLUS they could have simply used Claire's/Peter's blood to bring the real Nathan back. They just couldn't figure out what to do with Sylar.

That's exactly the way I've always thought of reading since I developed an interest in writing. It's more enjoyable than ever now. If you at least want to give the genre a chance, I would try A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin. It's a series (fantasy is like that) beginning with A Game of Thrones. You really can't go wrong with them. Especially from a technical standpoint. Martin is arguably the most skilled writer in the trade (for fantasy at least) right now. Fanboyism over . . . I finished Great Expectations a while back. Now it's Frankenstein. Both are fantastic. Also reading The Dark Tower because I feel like I haven't done Stephen King justice. I'm on the second one don't quite know what to make of them yet.

  22. WII FINALLY GOT YNGWIE MALMSTEEN DLC HOLY CRAP. Now I need to find the time to cart the stuff somewhere with wireless internet :x
  23. One Step Closer (Linkin Park lol), You Oughta Know, Rebel Girl, New Kid In School, Hello There, So Whatcha Want, basically any tier 1-3 song. I passed Never Too Late on Expert drums. After like 5 tries. Fun song. But I also suck.
  24. Unbelievable. The fact that anyone can be so incredibly arrogant as to pass judgment on this mother using what passes for his own morality is mind-boggling. So you think the baby should be put down. Well, the mother of Faith Hope doesn't give a [cabbage]. She may or may not be in for a rude awakening depending on her actual emotional state over this matter, but who is ANYONE to judge that? You have no right to condescend to someone in a position that there is almost zero chance you will ever be in yourself. Some of you give the impression that you would burst in and stab the baby yourself if you happened to be within ten miles of it.
