LOST
Is BKV still working on the show? I credit a large part of the awesomeness from around episode 3x19-present to him being executive story editor, but I haven't seen him credited on these last few episodes.

Twilight.
. . . Like me. You think I read these books because they're good? Or saw the movie? I knew what I was getting into, but as Twihards so kindly inform me, they won't listen to arguments unless the person arguing has "credibility." And then they don't listen anyway or tell me I shouldn't have read them in the first place.

Snow & Snow Days
Fourth snow day in a row for me. None of the snowstorm we got on Monday night/Tuesday morning has melted off (still below freezing) and we got a bit more through the week, but mainly it's because of the ice. All of the trees are frozen solid, we had a bit of frozen rain . . . Yeah Blizzard '09 here. Although I really thought we'd go back to school yesterday, both then and today we had a 2-hour delay that was changed to closed overnight.

Some lineart. (The Joker)
The fingers of his right hand are paper thin. And I don't get the huge dip in the fingers of his left. Is there any reason his index finger is that much higher than the others? Looks like a straight handle to me. Also, his right eye should be more in shadow, and it's hard to tell that his mouth is open. I think all you need to do to fix that is clean up the lines a bit, maybe add some shadow.

TCS: The Authors' Corner Volume 1 Issue 5 - PLEASE READ
Volume 1 Issue 5 News: Due to the temporary departure of ratchet573, I will be taking over management of The Authors Corner indefinitely. Hopefully ratchet will be back in a few weeks, and until then you can expect the paper to continue as normal. Actually, I hope that there will be some changes. We really do need others to contribute. That is why next week I hope to include one of the users of the Varrock Library as the author spotlight. If you would like to be featured, please write a paragraph, or two, or however many is necessary to address how you write, why you write, when you started writing, and anything else you would like to talk about. PLEASE DO THIS! We would love to hear more about you! Debate Question Winner: Due to lack of responses, there is no winner of last weeks debate question. Hawkxs and myself were the only ones to respond, so thank you hawkxs. See the end of the paper for this weeks question. Author Profiles: George R.R. Martin Most if not all of you probably have not heard of GRRM. This is a real shame, because he is arguably the most skilled writer on the market today. Unfortunately you probably havent read any of his books either. He has worked on many projects, not only books but television shows as well, including the new Twilight Zone, but is best known for his fantasy epic A Song of Ice and Fire. The first novel, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996, and the fourth and most recent, A Feast for Crows, in 2005. A Dance with Dragons, the fifth of a projected seven (after the series was extended from a trilogy) is slated to be released sometime this year after numerous delays.* Martins storytelling is notoriously dark and brutally unforgiving to his characters. The common writing phenomena of invincible heroes and Mary-Sues are virtually nonexistent; to date, eight point-of-view characters have been written out of A Song of Ice and Fire. No character is same from the pen of GRRM, and because each of his characters is unique and real, readers can easily form attachments that may be unmercifully severed. This may put some readers off, but in my humble opinion it makes the story that much better. Speaking of story, it is heavily influenced by the Wars of the Roses, being basically a war of succession that has developed to a far greater scope as the series continues. I cannot recommend this series enough. One word of caution: can be very, very sexually explicit. Not for young readers. Other than that, there are no reasons I can think of for anyone not to read ASoIaF. While youre at it, check out some of GRRMs other works as well! Cover art for the first five books. (A Dance with Dragons has yet to be released.) *A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons were originally planned to be one novel under the title of the latter, but it grew too large and was split. Because of this, ADwD was expected to be released in 2006. To the great frustration of fans, it has been delayed numerous times. LOST
^Not Widmore, Pace. The Charlie that died to save everyone. And one of my favorite characters ever, which is why that made my day. If anyone watched the "enhanced" repeat of the second episode right before the new one, they talked about the "temporal displacement." Nothing really significant, except to confirm that that is what's happening to Charlotte.

Abortion: Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
To be honest I've been waiting for someone to say this, because as far as I'm concerned it's utterly [developmentally delayed]ed to not discuss it. Y_guy, you say over and over again that scientists have proven that life begins at conception. A single-celled zygote is alive, and so is a single-celled bacterium. The question is, is it a human life? And what guarantees them this right? A constitution? Last I checked an unborn baby is not a citizen, much less a day old cell. Religion? That has no place in deciding whether or not abortion should be allowed or disallowed under the law. Some people don't consider a baby a human until it is born; after all, that is when it is named and becomes an individual separate from its mother. You can also recognize the development of a nervous system as the cutoff, or a heartbeat. There a lot of positions someone can take and frankly, taking an extremist one, to either side, is not helping anything.

Religious Politics
While America does have the legal seperatation of church and state, religion plays a big (yet indirect) role in politics. I mean just look at the election, both candidates went out of their way to appeal to religious groups, it was a big part of Palin's appeal. But they're not forcing religion on anyone. In fact they are fundamentally recognizing a person's right to his own choice of religion in trying to appeal to it. You really can't expect religion to be completely cut off from any political influence in any kind of society, but the separation of church and state ensures that religion and politics can't unite into something like a theocracy and deny the freedom of religion to citizens.

Religious Politics
That's why we have the Separation of Church and State doctrine. See? America doesn't do everything wrong.

Abortion: Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
Absolutely. After all, its just a thing and it doesn't have life. But is it the right thing to do? He just voiced his opinion that it doesn't have a life. Don't you think it's a little redundant to ask him if it's the right thing to do?

Butterfly Commission.
You all need to cool off a bit. Does it not occur to you that you have your own little "hug box" in launching a full-scale attack on LP? Nothing appeals to human nature like uniting against a lone outsider.

Abortion: Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA)
What? I've never understood why conservatives and liberals are classified they way they are in regards to abortion. All morality aside for a moment, it is way more liberal to expect government to involve itself in the personal decisions of mothers.

Anoying Teachers!!!!
 I really dislike my AP Bio teacher . . . On top of the fact that I can't stand the way she conducts class and really don't like the subject, she accused me of cheating. Falsely, but it was a pretty irritating situation. I actually still don't know if it's resolved. Anyway, I find it requires incredible willpower just to stay awake, not to mention pay attention to what she's droning about. I teach myself the unit the night before the test. Works pretty well for being a lazy-[wagon] solution.

V2 is still the best, I think. The other two have too many contrasting colors and are a bit too saturated.

Do you like to read?
You know, if the number of pages is the biggest problem people have with it, I suppose it's doing pretty good all things considered. Half-Blood Prince is my favorite of the series. Just tossing that in the mix. I don't like the first few as much because they're too episodic and rather pointless in the long run. Except for a few loooooong foreshadowing moments (Harry's snitch he caught in his mouth, for example.) The series is really meant to be taken as a whole, and because there is so much meat in the later books the first three only make up like 20% of the total pages.

HP is no where close to being the best ever written. Good books, even great, and something I'm happy to have read and defend against haters, but there are far better books. Same goes for LOTR, really. It was Tolkein's life's work and invented the fantasy genre as we know it, but that tends to overshadow the actual merit of the books. Not to say they aren't very good, but not the best ever written. Again, I agree that Deathly Hallows dragged in the middle. Cuts should have been made, but that doesn't make the point of those chapters any less except for not being as effective.

Do you like to read?
The point of the wandering in Deathly Hallows was fundamentally different from that in LOTR, because Sam and Frodo knew where they were going. The point of Harry, Ron, and Hermione rambling around the country was to show that they had no clue what they were doing or what to do next without the guidance of Dumbledore or anyone else. Rowling also used that opportunity to bring Ron's problems to a climax and stick in the Godric's Hollow visit. I do agree, however, that these events were spread too thinly and the section could have benefited from some cuts.
