People do it in game for the same reasons people bully others in real life - to feel better about themselves. Someone who sees a thread about, well, someone's first million should congratulate the person, but a lot of people will post mean things, like "haha well I got 10 mil noob" because they want to brag about their achievements. Or they just get annoyed by the person, but generally that's the fault of the noob.
