  1. [spoiler=And me trying to work out some of the other cities' names]

[1:08:55 AM] Erika: Hm... Maybe I can work out some of the other names
[1:09:12 AM] Erika: What are the Johto cities' names in this bootleg?
[1:10:28 AM] Alg: I could just send you the rom, if that would help
[1:11:02 AM] Erika: OK, so New Bark Town's Japanese name is "wakaba". If I remember correctly, that means "young leaf" in Japanese (thank you, Kazumi Magica). Yeah, I guess that fits with ruo(4) ye(4) (若葉)

[1:23:27 AM] Alg: It just has two letter names
    [1:23:36 AM] Erika: ....
[1:23:48 AM] Erika: OK, then give me the two letters
[1:24:05 AM | Edited 1:24:21 AM] Erika: Something like YS? Or JY?
[1:24:33 AM] Alg: Give me a minute, have to leave kanto
[1:24:48 AM] Erika: Wonder if it shows the full name if you Fly to the place
    [1:26:13 AM] Alg: JY
    [1:26:19 AM] Erika: Knew it
[1:26:36 AM] Erika: Bulbapedia really helped, TBH
    [1:26:52 AM] Alg: Heh
[1:27:07 AM] Erika: "From 吉野草 Yoshino-gusa (alternate name of the cherry blossom) and 染井吉野 Somei Yoshino (natural hybrid of the Japanese cherry tree)."
    [1:27:39 AM] Alg: Any others?
[1:27:51 AM | Edited 1:28:00 AM] Erika: "吉野草" - First two characters are "Ji2 Ye3" in Chinese.

[1:28:12 AM] Erika: Trying to figure out Violet's. It's GX, right?
[1:28:26 AM] Erika: OK, so it's GUIXIANG

[1:37:39 AM] Erika: Found a possible Kanji for the "kyou" part
[1:38:21 AM] Erika: 香 - pronounced xiang1, and if jisho.org is to be trusted, it has a possible pronunciation of "kyou"
[1:39:13 AM] Erika: It can also be pronounced "ka", and apparently, "ko" and "kao"
    [1:39:27 AM] Alg: Alright
[1:40:04 AM] Erika: Now to find the first part
    [1:41:45 AM] Erika: Well....
    [1:41:49 AM] Alg: ?
    [1:41:57 AM] Erika: I did find one, but it's a little far-fetched
[1:42:20 AM] Alg: Would it surprise you if it was right?
[1:42:43 AM] Erika: Yeah, there's apparently quite a few Kanji with the pronunciation "gui" in Chinese, and a possible pronunciation of "ki" in Japanese
[1:42:52 AM] Erika: Among them, "turtle" and "ghost"
[1:44:13 AM] Erika: But since it says something about "scents" in the town description, I believe the "kyou" used is 香, since that means "perfume"

    [1:44:43 AM] Erika: So what's Azalea's?
    [1:45:08 AM] Alg: RD
    [1:45:19 AM] Alg: Ridu
[1:46:36 AM] Erika: First part's possibly this one: http://jisho.org/kanji/details/%E6%97%A5
[1:46:47 AM] Erika: Pronounced "hi" in Japanese, "ri" in Chinese
    [1:47:35 AM] Alg: Straightforward
[1:49:25 AM] Erika: Not sure about the "du", unfortunately
    [1:49:32 AM] Alg: Ah well
    [1:49:43 AM] Erika: Goldenrod?
    [1:50:06 AM] Alg: GD
    [1:50:14 AM] Erika: As in...?
[1:50:28 AM] Alg: *shrug* Give me a minute, I don't have a flier
    [1:53:46 AM] Alg: Xiaojin?
[1:54:01 AM] Erika: Well, that's straightforward
[1:54:23 AM] Erika: Bulbapedia has it, apparently

    [1:54:31 AM] Alg: Ah
    [1:55:43 AM] Erika: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Goldenrod_City#Name_origin

[2:03:32 AM] Erika: OK, figured out the second bit for Olivine
[2:03:56 AM] Erika: The "gi" is the character 木, pronounce "mu4" in Chinese
[2:04:25 AM] Erika: And then I facepalmed mentally for not realizing this sooner
[2:04:49 AM] Erika: It was even one of the Kanji we learned in class, dammit!
[2:04:55 AM] Alg: It's always the obvious things
[2:05:45 AM] Erika: 朝 - pronounced "asa" in Japanese (means morning), and "zhao" in Chinese as one of two possible readings
[2:06:10 AM] Erika: "morning wood" - Yeah, that sounds like a good name for a city

    [2:07:44 AM] Erika: Cianwood next
[2:07:59 AM] Erika: So it's duanye in this bootleg
    [2:08:10 AM] Alg: Yep
[2:10:44 AM] Erika: Think the last part's possibly 葉 again
[2:10:56 AM] Erika: (It was also part of New Bark Town's name)
[2:14:03 AM] Erika: Found a possible one
    [2:14:06 AM] Alg: ?
[2:14:13 AM] Erika: For first part of Cianwood
    [2:14:16 AM] Erika: http://jisho.org/kanji/details/%E7%9F%AD
[2:14:47 AM] Erika: Apparently, one possible pronunciation of "tan" in Jpn, and pronounced "duan" in Chinese

[2:42:08 PM] Erika: *starts looking at the Kanto ones*
[2:44:05 PM] Erika: Vermilion = KE... That's helpful
    [2:44:48 PM] Alg: Kouye
[2:45:32 PM] Alg: ...And in checking that, I realized I never got the radio card
[2:45:34 PM] Erika: That's pretty close to its Chinese name, but I think I know what they did wrong
    [2:45:38 PM] Alg: Oh?
[2:46:08 PM] Erika: Official Chinese = 枯叶
What I think they went for = 口叶
[2:47:16 PM] Erika: Because that character has a pronunciation of "kuchi" in Japanese (Vermilion's Japanese name is "kuchiba"), and is pronounced "kou" in Chinese
    [2:47:32 PM] Alg: Ah
[2:47:39 PM] Erika: Unfortunately, said character also means "mouth"
[2:47:57 PM] Erika: So we get "mouth leaf" city.
[2:48:09 PM] Alg: [insert drug joke]

[2:55:03 PM] Erika: I am inclined to say Saffron's a typo
[2:55:13 PM] Erika: And that it really should be "shanchui", not shancui
[2:55:33 PM] Alg: You know better than I do :3
[2:56:07 PM] Erika: Well, Bulbapedia had this to say about the Japanese name
[2:56:32 PM] Erika: "ヤマブキシティ Yamabuki City  山吹色 (yamabuki iro) refers to the golden color of Kerria flowers." First two Kanji are "shanchui" in Chinese.

[3:09:41 PM] Erika: So Lavender's both Xiwan and Xiuan?
[3:09:56 PM] Alg: Apparently. More likely that they typoed
[3:10:48 PM] Erika: Japanese is "shion"
[3:12:15 PM] Erika: Thing is, depending on which one it is, it could be either xi wan, or xiu an
[3:13:13 PM] Erika: Think it might be more likely to be the latter
[3:13:14 PM] Alg: Map goes with SN
[3:13:37 PM] Erika: That's probably from its Japanese name of "Shion"
    [3:15:08 PM] Erika: *is stumped*

    [spoiler=In short]

    New Bark Town = 若叶

    Cherrygrove = 吉野

    Violet = (most likely) 贵香

    Azalea = (most likely) 日渡

Goldenrod and Ecruteak actually matched their Bulbapedia-given Chinese names.

    Olivine = (most likely) 朝木

    Cianwood = (most likely) 短叶

Mahogany = (possibly) 长治 (TBH, I'm stumped. Closest I could find)

Blackthorn = Most likely a phonetic translation from its Japanese name.

    Vermilion = (most likely) 口叶

    Saffron = 山吹

Celadon = I have absolutely no idea.

Lavender Town = Same with Celadon. Having two different names doesn't make it easier.

    Cerulean = (most likely) 花田

  2. [spoiler=Some stuff that was left out]

[12:14:32 AM] Erika: Just finished reading that
[12:14:41 AM] Erika: took two and a half hours. Wow
[12:15:14 AM] Erika: I'll admit, it was weird seeing them call their attacks
[12:15:48 AM] Erika: And I didn't like the "reminders" they put in at all... Why did they have to use her as the example?? Pretty sure there are others available...
[12:16:31 AM] Alg: But hers is basically the defining example
    [12:18:29 AM] Erika: Shut up.
[12:18:34 AM] Erika: Don't forget VCrystal
    [12:18:53 AM] Alg: Oh
    [12:18:54 AM] Alg: Right
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[12:53:06 AM] Alg: I should find grinding music
    [12:53:34 AM | Edited 12:53:41 AM] Erika: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RqFFwrhZ_o
[12:53:57 AM] Erika: Kind of have that one bookmarked, so...
    [12:54:03 AM] Alg: Heh
    [12:54:11 AM] Erika: Enjoy!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1:48:34 AM] Alg: Found a use for the NGE ending
    [1:50:35 AM] Erika: Oh?
    [1:51:09 AM] Alg: http://i.imgur.com/0ZBsXkM.png
    [1:51:26 AM] Erika: Oh
[2:04:03 AM] Erika: So are you posting it?
[2:04:17 AM] Erika: Or did the game freeze up again?
[2:06:11 AM] Alg: Posting it. It's long
[2:31:47 AM] Erika: How long is it?
    [2:31:51 AM] Alg: http://forum.tip.it/blog/124/entry-3547-alg-plays-the-pokemon-vietnamese-crystal-finale/
[2:31:54 AM] Alg: See for yourself

    [spoiler=Oh, and there's this]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2E73uBUj1w#t=0

[spoiler=And for those of you who can't read Japanese]

The Japanese text in the EVA ending vid ALG included translates to:
"Father, thank you. Mother, good-bye. And, to all the children, congratulations."

(Chichi ni, arigatou. Haha ni, sayonara. Soshite, subete no chirudoren ni, omedetou.)

This is a very literal translation (that still makes sense). Sure wish I could've done more in the Behind the Scenes, but like ALG said, even I'm confused how they got "TOD" from "Kyou" (apricot, if Janine's Japanese name is any indication).

  3. "It's a good thing I don't have a fetish for blue-haired warrior women or this would be awkward."

May I remind you of what you previously used as an avatar? And a certain Dewott in your Nuzlocke of W2, that you didn't seem to finish. And your starter in that "failed" Platinum run. Not to mention you did admit you were tempted by that Vaporeon I bred for a joke. You know, that Naive female with Curse/Round/Muddy Water/Acid Armor, and holding a Destiny Knot.

  4. We're all getting distracted by gaming here. I haven't done anything for Platinum in days. I blame you for giving me the Madoka PSP game and the emulator to play it on, though.

Not that I'm not grateful for it or anything. I'm actually squeeing over some of the dialogue in the game. Like a certain one in Homura's Route. You should know which one. The fact that I know enough Japanese to get the gist of it just makes me squee even harder. Hey, I did say I ship those two so much it's not even funny.

  5. [spoiler=The complete, intact transcript of everything we were discussing for/during this part]

    [12:25:46 AM] Alg: JMLTE'SWID
    TO COMPETE
    [12:25:58 AM] Erika: Huh?
[12:26:14 AM] Erika: Is that Pryce?
[12:26:19 AM] Alg: Gym Leader Pryce would like to battle
[12:26:28 AM] Alg: And then the freezing and the resetting
[12:26:28 AM] Erika: So Pryce = WID
[12:26:44 AM] Erika: Make sure to back up the save, too
[12:26:49 AM] Alg: They also call him MR.LIU and WILLOW
    [12:26:51 AM] Alg: And done
[12:26:56 AM] Erika: I did call that
[12:27:10 AM] Erika: I called that his name would have something to do with willows
[12:27:24 AM] Erika: The character is used in his Chinese name, that's why
[12:27:48 AM] Erika: And one of the characters possible for LIU is the character for willow
    [12:28:04 AM] Alg: How straightforward
[12:28:18 AM] Erika: Not sure how they got WID
[12:30:28 AM] Alg: Yaay, save-breaking crash!
    [12:30:36 AM] Erika: What, really?
[12:30:44 AM] Alg: That's what the backup is for
[12:30:56 AM] Erika: Aren't you glad I reminded you now?
[12:31:23 AM] Alg: Just have to go through his trainers again
[12:31:32 AM] Erika: Apparently, the word "bonkler" doesn't exist in the English language
[12:32:02 AM] Erika: Maybe it's a good idea to save and back up the save before challenging him but after beating all his Trainers and getting healed and stuff?
[12:32:15 AM] Alg: It is[spoiler=unrelated stuff][12:32:46 AM] Erika: Oh my...
    [12:32:55 AM] Alg: ?
[12:33:22 AM] Erika: Wrote the katakana for "bonkler" (bonkura) in Google Translate, got out "dumb ass"
[12:33:42 AM] Alg: Completely in character
[12:33:53 AM] Erika: Well, the other translation was "d*ckhead"
[12:34:23 AM] Alg: Also in character
[12:34:29 AM] Erika: Yeah, I know
[12:34:45 AM] Erika: But I'm surprised at the number of works/subs that leave it untranslated
[12:34:59 AM] Erika: I wonder if the official subs translated it... *goes to check Ep7*
[12:35:47 AM] Erika: Yes, I am such a nerd I even remember the episode it was used in
[12:36:11 AM] Alg: *ominous voice* Welcome... TO THE FANDOM
[12:36:32 AM] Erika: The "official" subs have it as "blockhead"
    [12:37:40 AM] Alg: Close

[12:44:18 AM] Erika: Also, why are you swooning over ???
    [12:45:28 AM] Alg: It's a joke
[12:46:17 AM] Alg: And now I have MUKEI
    [12:46:22 AM] Alg: (nium)
    [12:46:37 AM] Erika: OK...
[12:48:11 AM] Alg: Crits on both of Pryce's rest users. Yay
    [12:52:18 AM] Alg: Remoraid = FISH... It's... It's not /wrong/, but...
[12:57:40 AM] Erika: It could be better?
    [12:57:50 AM] Alg: I just don't know
    [12:59:23 AM] Alg: ALG!Y
    BAG    [bleep]

    A very deep question...
[12:59:52 AM] Erika: Did you pic it?
    [12:59:57 AM] Alg: Yes
[1:08:57 AM] Alg: Done with the gameplay... Think I might have to bench DELAN
    [1:09:15 AM] Erika: What's wrong?
[1:10:08 AM] Alg: He's stuck with tackle and confusion as his only moves, and the TMs to fix that are postgame only
[1:10:20 AM] Erika: No Giga Drain?
[1:10:38 AM] Alg: Erika gives it out, appropriately enough
[1:10:48 AM] Erika: What about Psybeam? Silver Wind? Bug Buzz? Mega Drain?
[1:11:07 AM] Erika: Sleep Powder? Psychic?
[1:11:14 AM] Alg: Psybeam is at 34
[1:11:57 AM] Alg: He has sleep powder, but no compoundeyes, mega drain isn't an option, psychic is postgame, silver wind and bug buzz don't exist yet
    [1:12:29 AM] Erika: Damn
[1:12:39 AM] Erika: Bugs really did suck in this gen
[1:12:51 AM] Alg: It's the generation between the two where Butterfree was good
[1:13:25 AM] Erika: Glad the games I played had decent Bugs, then
[1:14:11 AM] Alg: Kanto basically hands it a good movepool, 1 has the benefit of a fairly low power curve and 3 optimizes it for support
[1:14:35 AM] Erika: And then four gave it the special split
[1:14:54 AM] Alg: 5 gave it quiver dance and 6 flat out buffed its stats
[1:15:17 AM] Erika: Now that I think about it, while Butterfree are common in FR/LG, there's like... hardly any used in HG/SS. Why?
[1:16:16 AM] Alg: They're earlygame only, in routes where you have a lot of other options. Even then, it's morning/day only and all but locked to HG
[1:16:41 AM] Erika: Well, no matter what anyone says, I'm proud of having Ritchie on my team

  6.

    ALG!GREASE

    BAG FÜCK

You forgot the "Y" at the end of the second word. But other than that, congratulations for figuring it out!

Hey, ALG, got a prize for this guy?

Oh, yeah, almost forgot about this bit.

[spoiler=For those wondering about the name we came up with for Shinies. Warning: Wall of text]

[11/22/2013 2:17:43 AM] Alg: Let's see if I can use Google Translate to get an "official" name for shinies for this hack

[11/22/2013 2:18:32 AM] Erika: I'll look on Bulbapedia

[11/22/2013 2:18:48 AM] Alg: I got "Different colors"

[11/22/2013 2:19:13 AM] Erika: I got "iro chigau" - different coloured

[11/22/2013 2:19:29 AM] Erika: And... "hikaru"

[11/22/2013 2:21:12 AM] Alg: "Inequality Color Basis"...? I like

[11/22/2013 2:21:33 AM] Erika: Did you translate that from Japanese to Chinese to Vietnamese to English?

    [11/22/2013 2:21:40 AM] Alg: Yes

[11/22/2013 2:21:51 AM] Erika: Lemme try. And I'll actually start with the Japanese

    [11/22/2013 2:21:56 AM] Alg: I did

[11/22/2013 2:22:59 AM] Erika: The Japanese -> Chinese is messed up

    [11/22/2013 2:23:55 AM] Alg: Oh?

[11/22/2013 2:24:17 AM] Erika: It gives "wrongly-coloured" 颜色错了 instead of what would be the more accurate 不同颜色 (different coloured)

[11/22/2013 2:25:11 AM] Alg: Found a genius bonus, of all things

[11/22/2013 2:27:09 AM] Erika: If you put the latter phrase into Google translate, it gives the Japanese term

[11/22/2013 2:27:26 AM] Erika: But for some reason, the Japanese term gives "wrongly-coloured"

[11/22/2013 2:30:17 AM] Erika: Either way, it's messed up

[11/22/2013 2:30:41 AM] Alg: Yep. Minor note: the game uses British English

[11/22/2013 2:30:52 AM] Erika: Lemme think of how this would work for "hikaru". I think it'll fit better here

[11/22/2013 2:31:11 AM] Erika: "hikaru" is a verb...

[11/22/2013 2:31:46 AM] Erika: I know "hikari" means light (as in, the light from the sun, ETC)

[11/22/2013 2:31:47 AM] Alg: I recognize that as "light", right?

[11/22/2013 2:31:54 AM] Alg: So, to light?

    [11/22/2013 2:31:58 AM] Alg: Shine

[11/22/2013 2:32:09 AM] Erika: I think "to shine"

    [11/22/2013 2:32:18 AM] Alg: I can english

[11/22/2013 2:32:19 AM] Erika: So that in Chinese would be...

[11/22/2013 2:32:39 AM] Erika: "发光" - giving off light

[11/22/2013 2:32:47 AM] Erika: That's the closest I can think of

[11/22/2013 2:33:23 AM] Erika: And if Google Translate can be trusted, I'm right

[11/22/2013 2:33:40 AM] Erika: So how would one mangle "giving off light"?

[11/22/2013 2:34:17 AM] Alg: Bear in mind that the official term was "Differently colored" in gen 2

[11/22/2013 2:34:22 AM] Erika: OK, I got "luminous"

[11/22/2013 2:34:53 AM] Erika: Basically, I got the Chinese from the Japanese, and then translated to English

[11/22/2013 2:35:07 AM] Erika: Now, if you really wanna mangle it, you can try a pun

[11/22/2013 2:35:25 AM] Alg: That will go badly

[11/22/2013 2:35:34 AM] Erika: I believe "nasu" means "eggplant" in Japanese

[11/22/2013 2:35:53 AM] Erika: Oh, in Japanese, the katakana for "luminous" would be "ruminasu"

[11/22/2013 2:37:52 AM] Erika: So if you really want to make it hilarious, call the shinies "Lumi eggplant"

[11/22/2013 2:38:40 AM] Alg: Is "Inequality Color Basis" still an option?

[11/22/2013 2:38:50 AM] Erika: I think the eggplant's more hilarious

[11/22/2013 2:40:15 AM] Alg: Still works

[11/22/2013 2:40:30 AM] Erika: Use it for the sake of a Shout Out?

    [11/22/2013 2:40:38 AM] Erika: Say it's a recursive translation

[11/22/2013 2:41:03 AM] Erika: That we went Japanese -> Chinese -> English -> Japanese -> "Engrish"

[11/22/2013 2:41:15 AM] Erika: Since neither of us knew any Vietnamese

[11/22/2013 2:41:23 AM] Alg: But translaaate

[11/22/2013 2:41:31 AM] Erika: Translate mangles things

[11/22/2013 2:41:46 AM] Alg: That's arguably the point

[11/22/2013 2:41:50 AM] Alg: I mean, look at the game

[11/22/2013 3:12:16 AM] Alg: "THE FIRST SHINY ALTERNATE COLOR 色違い LUMI-EGGPLANT INEQUALITY COLOR BASIS ELF"

[11/22/2013 3:12:36 AM] Erika: Sounds like something the game would do

[11/22/2013 3:13:12 AM] Erika: But maybe "ALTERNATE LUMI-EGGPLANT INEQUALITY COLOUR BASIS ELF" is more than enough

[11/22/2013 3:13:58 AM] Alg: Using that

[11/22/2013 3:14:01 AM] Alg: USING IT

  7. I think I just figured out why Chikorita is translated as QI GE LEADER in this hack. It was probably a botched translation from the original Japanese. The last bit of its name "リータ” sounds similar to "leader" (リーダー) in Japanese. The "QI GE" was probably an attempt to translate the first bit phonetically to Chinese. But in Chinese, its official name is apparently "菊草叶", which is nowhere close to whatever this is.

[spoiler=A few more details]According to my Japanese teacher, Chinese people often have a hard time differentiating the "t" and "d" sounds in Japanese, so the Japanese -> Chinese translators probably misheard. "QI" in Chinese has a similar pronunciation to "chi", so that's my reasoning for the other part.

  8. Found this.

Since you claim you're already going insane from playing Vietnamese Crystal, I don't see how this could possibly cause any further harm. Enjoy! Maybe it can serve as grinding music or something. It is rather catchy.

And here's something else, assuming everything goes well.

Oh, and congratulations on sweeping Falkner/はやと/whatever he's called with a Metapod. Take this one all the way! But then again, badass Bugs are a huge Nuzlocke cliche now. Especially Butterfree. Ah, just make sure people know of DELAN, who swept a Gym Leader while unevolved. *huge round of applause for DELAN*

Yes, I typed this up at 5AM, so if this post sounds sillier than usual, that's why.

  9. The only reason I voted for the Grass Elf/Chikorita is because you did take one all the way in a Nuzlocke Crystal run. And you've shown to prefer the Grass starter, since you almost always picked Treecko, and Turtwig, and Snivy. Weren't you also saying something about how Flora took down Clair's Kingdra with a Poisonpowder + Synthesis combo, too? And something else about Link surviving an Explosion from one of Colress's Mons in W2? And I think you mentioned that Elaine was a total badass during the fight with Wallace in your Emerald run. Grass Mons are made for you, ALG.

That, or just tanks in general. We'll see how well you do with Octavia in your Platinum run.

And before I forget, one more link for you.
