Eh, probably worth checking. They seem absolutely fine though; I was copying stuff at close to my maximum read/write speeds today, and there is no loud noise from them when they're idling any more. I've heard reports of Vista thrashing the HDDs around a bit. I guess it just utilises them differently to what I'm used to. Overall, the upgrade was worth it; it seems to run smoother than XP and I've not really noticed any difference in performance.

K-ON!! and that is pretty much all. I have so much other stuff to watch that I don't really have time to download stuff from this season at all. Also: if any of you are planning on watching Hidamari Sketch x ☆☆☆, go for Tortoise subs. Nutbladder is painfully unprofessional and can't live up to their former group at all. Mistranslation/localisation and general halfassery left in to annoy people. I [bleep]ing hate speedsubs. [bleep]damn. It's all gg's fault.

Quite a good lineup, apart from Limp Bizkit, You Me at Six and All Time Low. I would quite like to see Biffy Clyro and The Gaslight Anthem live.

It sounds more like a drive powering on/off, really. I've disconnected my DVD drive and I'm going to see if I can trigger the sound on shutdown. [e] Two successful shutdowns in the last 15 minutes with no buzz from anything. One was a complete system shutdown to see if it would trigger, the other one was restarting for updates. I found out it would buzz on shutdown when I went to bed last night. My DVD drive is 6 or 7 years old and uses IDE; maybe it's time for a new one. I have a spare LITE-ON SATA drive lying around somewhere. Also, I would appreciate it if the mods could keep this open for a while in case it starts recurring. [e -2] Happened again when I accessed my recycle bin. Honestly, it just seems like a drive spinning up and I'm being paranoid.

Nothing is overheating. The CPU is turning over at 25C and the GPU is at 73C (it's a G80 8800GTS, which runs fairly hot). Also, it's just preference. 7 just felt awkward to use in the RC phase; also, there was some issue I had with decoding HD H.264-encoded video that I don't have with Vista. I kind of have a feeling it could be my DVD drive; I'll disconnect it tomorrow and see how it goes. I know for a fact that it used to make 7 seize up. Other than that, I have nothing to go on.

I feel sorry for you guys. Norwich's being treated as a beta testing place, so we're starting to see some fibre optic connections via Virgin and BT, but I fear the nicer parts of the county aren't going to get the same treatment. Still, loads of governments are making promises to get broadband to rural areas, so there's hope. Out Yarmouth way, we really don't have anything apart from BT, Tiscali, Sky's cheap rubbish connection and PlusNet; none of which are particularly brilliant. The speeds off-peak are fairly decent because most villages have their own exchange, but there is just no demand for anything better at all. I get 7Mbps off-peak with Tiscali but the connection is so horribly inconsistent that I'm often left suddenly lagging out of nowhere or losing download speed. It seems to be a common problem for people on ADSLMax lines. Considering my proximity to Yarmouth, I wouldn't be surprised if we did eventually get something a little more this decade.

Today, I received and installed my copy of Windows Vista Home Premium x86. However, since installation, I've come across this weird "buzzing" noise, for want of a better word. At first, I thought it was just happening when I tried to load a lot of stuff off any of my HDDs at once, but it has started happening randomly too. I have no idea how to describe it other than this really grating buzzing noise; it has also been accompanied by a second or two of system lockup once or twice. The only changes I've made in the past month is installing two advanced format Western Digital Green 640GB hard drives, which I formatted again using the correct sector allocation (I had to align them manually on XP) after installing Vista. The problem persists. I am going to be incredibly fed up if I find out it is in fact Vista (and if it is a problem), because I'm £85 out-of-pocket that way. I'm really sorry for being vague, but I have no way of actually showing you it because it's random and not constant. If anyone can shed any light on this at all, please do. I hope it isn't something failing.

Avoid Alienware. Just avoid it. ASUS seems to be pretty solid as far as laptops go. HP is trash, avoid. Several of my friends had problems with flimsy build quality and power adapters. My sister has an Advent laptop which seems to be running well so far (it is three months old.)

If they're doing things such as installing illegal copies of Windows, I would definitely report them. I've used my local store quite a lot over the years, mostly out of convenience. I've never had any problems with them at all, nor do they overcharge. I still can't think how a cursor issue is related to the BIOS... I'll take a look around the Internet and get back to you if I find anything. [edit] Ninja'd by Vidi. If you have an ATi card, that is indeed a known problem.

'Special Relationship' between the USA and Britain is over
Jernlov replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Off-Topic
As someone who has lived in England all of my life, I find this opinion a bit awkward. I genuinely like where I live despite its problems, which is something that Americans can never seem to grasp properly. I don't think my quality of life would improve at all if I went anywhere else. Sure, the whole "Orwellian state" bullcrap is a bit concerning, but we have not turned into a cotton wool state like Australia. The media makes our problems seem a lot bigger than they actually are. First off, the problem is that we lack any sort of balance politically. We have two (three) large, centrist parties but only very small extreme left and extreme right parties. Unlike our neighbouring countries, we have no socially left/socially right parties that we can reasonably vote for because people here are obsessed with the Tories, whereas people in Scotland and Wales have their two socially left national parties, Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru, in power. Right-wing nationalism is definitely not the answer to England's problems in the slightest - do you actually understand fully what the BNP stands for? Nick Griffin keeps on spouting his "indigenous British" rubbish when there are, in fact, absolutely no "indigenous British" people in existence. Most people in Britain are of Anglo-Saxon descent, followed by the Cornish and Welsh (Britons - but still not indigenous British!) and then Gaels (Scottish, Irish). Their idea of indigenous British is, in short, "being white and being born in Britain;" they seek to remove anyone who is not any of these things. The reason they are coming into power is because people are disenchanted with our appalling immigration control; yes, even I am, but it is not a reason to vote a party such as the BNP into power. Second, withdrawing from the EU would only hurt the country. I don't mind a bit of Euro-scepticism, but seriously? We have a shattered economy and a huge national debt, and I think withdrawing from the Union would only worsen those issues. "EUSSR," huh? Really funny. I'm not even going to bother with arguing this because it was a silly thing to insinuate in the first place. Third, overcrowding is largely a city problem. I live out in one of the most sparsely populated areas of England, and even the county town isn't what I would call "overcrowded." It's true that walking through any of our major cities is often like walking into a completely different country, but it is honestly not something I consciously think about. I don't think many people consciously think about overcrowding. We've had a relatively high population density for a while and you learn to live with it. England and the UK could be so much worse, and it is something that people who don't live here can't understand. -
Pretty much any stereo with RCA input can be used with a computer. All you need is an RCA -> 3.5mm lead and you're set. As for something good, I don't know. I have a Sony mini stereo and I wouldn't really recommend that, even if it's fine for me.

Death Note takes itself far too seriously for my liking. I generally like more light-hearted anime, mostly because I can wind myself down and relax with it; but something with a lot of drama can be just as good fun to watch. Also, those sort of slice of life shows that are in a similar vein to Manabi Straight and Aria; stuff that really fills you with a sense of well-being. Also, I still have this lingering association that Death Note is watched and read by fourteen year old girls that are "obsessed" with "Japan" - there was someone like this in my high school class. She would dress up in Gothic Lolita or visual kei fashion outside of school and call things "kawaii" or "sugoi." Pretty much a walking stereotype. I bet she has grown out of it now. I've been rewatching Hidamari Sketch. I would say it is my favourite anime, perhaps. It's a close contest between Hidamari, Aria and Manabi Straight. No series can really make me feel as relaxed and happy as Hidamari; I had really forgotten how wonderful I had found it, and I still have the latest season to watch. Awesome.

There seems to be an upsurge in this type of thing going on lately. A couple of my friends got their Steam accounts stolen due to something similar. Just a heads-up from me.

あぁぁぁ、日本語は難しいね I think Japanese would probably be easier. It's easier to read and write Hangul than it is Kanji, but the ordering in Japanese (and the grammar) is fairly simple overall, compared to Korean. I just wish I wasn't scared off by Kanji until now. If only I had picked it up when younger.

I would say I am quite like you. I don't think I complain anywhere near as much, though. Just find something pointless to be interested in as a side to playing MMORPGs. Mine happens to be Japan (and it used to be music) but feel free to chase up anything that you like. I shouldn't worry about work until you've finished high school.

People who say screaming and rapping take no skill have never tried to do either. There are [cabbage]ty screamers and [cabbage]ty rappers; it's all about how you command your voice and that alone requires a great deal of precision. By no means is it unskilful, though. Was someone hating on extratone? That stuff is awesome, but I think it is just me and a select niche of the Internet that enjoys it, ~ironically~ or not.

I always love it when people with an interest in various subgenres of electronic dance music post here. There's just such an in-depth knowledge that you really don't find in circles that involve guitar-based music. It's really something. The only hardcore I've ever listened to is the stuff that gets played on Otaku Hardcore Revolution (OHR) when it comes around. I don't really have much of an interest in finding new music any more, otherwise I would probably be checking out some of the stuff listed here because I like what I've heard of the genre. Maybe one day I will get my music-finding spark back again.

I often run more than 10 if I'm browsing imageboards/music sites/etc. It doesn't adversely affect my performance.

I wonder if it is affecting certain countries.
