The Back Room
Great work is on my profile. Uncompleted, of course... The trick I found was to do it as a series of short, self contained, stories. So chapter 1 is about one person, and some stuff happens to them, chapter 2 is about a different person, chapter 3 goes back to person one, chapter 4 goes back to person 2, chapter 5 introduces a new character....So on and so forth, each time you reach a block you start the story from a new angle. Also means you can reuse things a lot, so that one good idea you had is actually four good ideas.

Crete begins trading Spam for Opium. Crete uses the Spam to feed it's people, and uses the massive tracts of open farmland, that are now avalible, to begin growing Opium, which it sells back to Africa to help with their headache, caused by the Spam.

Corrosponds is perhaps too strong a word in this instance... I say: 'This alliance thing is like the New World Order all over again, or the Alliance in the last game that would have killed the game if the Hex thing hadn't depressed me into hating coming on here. Thus the only, non-game wrecking, point would be to laugh at those people not in the alliance, which is callous and stuck up.' Your responce says: 'Archi, you are stuck up and callous, you need to realise this' So either you are inviting me to the alliance, which is flattering though still very hurtful, or you are just being hurtful. That said... I don't plan to achieve immortality through my work, or through my children...I plan to achieve immortality by living forever.

How about: NWO OR TF Quite what the point of this alliance is is beyond me...unless it gives access to a clubhouse where you can giggle at the mortals outside.....

Oh, Retech, how did my friendly expeditions go? I assume well and I don't need to talk to anyone about it?

The game lasts four hours and forty minutes(game time). I sincerely doubt that they will require new boots during that time. But yeah, most stuff is obvious, I will answer any questions asked, though there will not be a 50 page rule book, because that kills every game that has had one. General rule: Ask. King of Norway is fine...your troops will need to march from Norway to Normandy, so the battle will be long over by that point.... Anyway, if people honestly don't care then I will assign sides based on the number of posts you have made on the thread.

Crete begins to trickle troops into Sri Lanka to protect certain business deals and such. Probably about a thousand per year, for the next 14 years. If there is any neccessity I will negotiate with the Sri Lankan Authorities about stationing the troops there. Also, I will set up a small, isolated, settlement to support my soliders, with the government's permission, if one exists. I am open to negotiations from the Sri Lankan Authorities.

Ok then. The Duke of Hampshire and the Duke of Normandy, William's Son, have been taken.

The Back Room
Actually, only Angland and France are involved, so please pick your province/county...you are a Duke or Baron or whatever. Dusty and Retech can choose to be King if they want.

The Back Room
Well...I think we should start with a battle from 1077 AD, then have one from 3000 AD, one in 1800 AD and one in 200 BC, and then a space battle in 45000 AD. That should take us to to about the 21st of August, then we can decide which ones we want to do again. First one is a buffet, so to speak, there will be 2 naval powers, and then however many land powers to bring us up to full. The story will be set in Normandy....After the defeat of William the Conquerer at the Battle of Hastings, King Harold of Anglend has laid claim to William's portion of Normandy. The King of France has been rightly horrified by this and has amassed an army to deal with these invaders. If people want to take part please submit a country and a summery of your forces(NO NUMBERS).

Hmmm....I wonder if I could ask another mod to set up the join discussions so I could take part [/Pipe dream, ignoring the obvouis task of having to set up the game] Anyway, I think unbalanced battles would be more fun than balanced battles...

Well, laser troopers and mutants....Since nukes and silly research would not be an option...but yeah, I was thinking medievl, since that is what people are using currently.

The Back Room
What might be fun...and would fit the crowd perfectly...is a tactical game, rather than a strategic or individualistic game. Idea: Someone designs a battlefield and a weather scehedual. People pick countries, and are given the choice of forces to deploy. Once it is decided the mod tells me the two/more sides and I create joint discussions between those people. Game runs for a week or so, each 12 hours representing 20 minutes of the battle. If people leave then their forces are assigned to the rest of their team. Anyone interested?

On a comically related note, five year olds are being recruited to advise on strategy in Cretian battles from now on. The hope is to prevent common sense failures.

Crete sends a bunch of people to the Ottoman Empire, Greenland, Tunisa, Cape Horn, Cape Hope and Sri Lanka(Or their 11th century equivients.) Also, I announce a Unique Unit, Cretian Traders. Cretian Traders increase the value of goods by 50% on the ship they are travelling on. At the expense of two hundred thousand per trader. Overpowered/Underpowered, won't be using for a few days so I am none too worried right now.

Meh, boat = free arrow defence which requires no training, all of your arguements ignore that. But you are right Ross, having my entire army carry around armour does seem like a pretty stupid thing to do...No, wait, thats not carrying around armour. Also, is this game played in the 15 century? Since I was under the impression it was the 9th cenury(1000), in which case Mechanical Crossbows do not exist. Single file troop attacks are silly, hence why piercing damage would have little effect...Unless of course I was attacking with 30,000 troops from one direction, in which case the hoard would be susceptible. Mather, having your force mainly made up of troops like that shows tremendous short sightedness when I could deploy a troop of longbowmen and a few swordsmen behind a shallow incline and kill your entire force...Or significantly destroy your force while losing, at most 500 people. Diversity is what makes armies strong. Another benefit, which the Terrapin defence doesn't cover is Catapult attack. 50 people in close proximity = 50 deaths. 2, or even 4 people under a boat = 2 to 4 deaths.... Thus the killing power of a catapult is dramatically reduced. Also, to clarify, I am not deploying my army with boat defences...Since I am not currently deploying an army to fight people.

Again, how....if you were using a catapult then you are expending huge resources to deal with one or two soliders(at a time), or you are waiting for them to be within 5 meters, at which point the danger of arrows is largely gone, meaning you could remove the boat without significant worry. Attaching it to the arrow is, obvouisly, possible...however you are surrounded by dirt, so shoving that is possible, though undesiriable. Arbalest- Nice, though expensive bow verse cheap defence....I mean if your entire army had to be upgraded to Arbalests then I might as well forget about the boats and run at you with a cheap sword while you struggle to kill one or two of us in a minute. Alternatively, again, I deploy my long bows and fire arrows at a much faster rate....killing your highly trained people, and then advancing normally...- Ye Olde Hegemony
"Set fire to the upturned boat" Boat wood has a high water content, so would be more difficult to set fire too... Also, how are you gonna set fire to it? Fire flaming arrows at it, then it provides a decent protective shield so it does it's job...and bows have a range of less than a mile....assuming 2 miles an hour(with a boat on your back that is about right), that is 30 minutes(at most) to reach the lines...During which time they could have been killed many hundreds of times by arrows. Also you could soak the boat in water before you left, or, if you were very far away you could remove the arrow, since accuracy drops off significantly with range. So... "or shoot at their legs so they fall over and are trapped by their boat." Yes... How exactly? Unless they were standing on top of a cliff and you were standing at the bottom of said cliff and you thought 'I know what I will do' and shot them in the leg....although at that point they were fall off the cliff and so wouldn't be trapped...though 99% sure they would be dead. Otherwise you are saying walk up to them, lift the boat off of them and get out cross bow and shoot them in the leg, then lower the boat back onto them...hoping they don't stab you during the interrim. Unless of course Scorpio was the invention of bouncing arrows or some other way off shooting an arrow upwards, having it decend to clear the boat and then ascend again into their legs. "Plus, carrying a boat around would be cumbersome." Or carrying a boat around would give them better strength, and thus making them better fighters. Also, cumbersome/dead...cumbersome/dead....which to pick... Alternatively to address both of your last two points, wheels....meaning it was not terribly cumbersome(although not majorly manoeverable) and the distance beween floor and boat(Which I envisaged at less than 20 centimeters) would be set at a small amount.- Ye Olde Hegemony
The second and third paragraphs do, but they never promised immunity from arrows. 1) I am alive, and as much as I value my horse, I value my life more 2) Hoplites don't have bows and are the natural enemy for horses, so any advantage would be good. 3) Horses suck at swimming, so hypothetical archers are better than certain drowning. 4) Swordsmen don't tend to have bows, and if they did they could shoot the horse anyway...But at least it benefits the horse against the other 99% of swordsmen.- Ye Olde Hegemony
Yes... Me and my boat were out travelling, me hiding under the boat....at which point enemies snuck into my country and killed my horse. However, this was fairly silly for 2 reasons: 1 ) I destroyed their house, chickens and family while they were shooting my horse 2 ) I didn't have a horse as I had a boat...having both would be silly.- Ye Olde Hegemony
Although...turn it up the otherway and you are immune to arrows...So swings and roundabouts. Course a better plan would be to have 6 logs, two horizontal across the saddle and the other four extending skywards with spiked ends, providing 3 or 4 side protection from arrows when combined with some rugs and rope. Then you can convert it to 4 lances/spears in the case of Hoplites or opposing horses. Also you can make a raft that could(would need to run the figures) carry a horse over water... Alternatively you could have the 2 non-sharpened, extra long, ones attached the saddle, with the other 4 set to a point fore and aft...then attach the rugs and ropes and you have a bumper/skirt, perfect for charging a bunch of soliders. The possibites are endless.- Ye Olde Hegemony
