i'd say it's always better to mine iron (which, i think, can be 1-hit at lvl 55) i can easily expect one load of iron every five minutes, while a load of coal in the guild takes 10 minutes (at best) and up to 20 minutes (at worst)...currently i'm lvl 82 mining also, iron easily sells for 100 minimum whereas you can expect to wait a bit before selling coal for 200 each plus, each iron gives 35 exp per ore while coal only gives 50 exp per ore then again, maybe p2p'ers have locations that are faster than the crowded f2p guild :-k

that's probably because less people = less randoms (i consider moving fishing spots to be randoms, in addition to whirlpools and those fish that steal your equipment)

i assume you're talking about pot lids? i think you can only make those after getting to a certain point in the swan song quest
