March 15, 200719 yr This title should be changed to... "American or European/Asian/SouthAmerican/African" ;) Actually Canadians call it soccer too...if you want to be all technical about it. Trix.--quit WoW as of 12/07Thank you 4be2jue for the wonderful sig and avatar!
March 15, 200719 yr soccer because i am american Why does that matter? So just because you're from America, you have to follow the wrong norm? Why not decide for yourself which makes more sense, and then call it whichever you choose? Sorry, but why is it 'wrong'? This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
March 15, 200719 yr football ftw. I'm no auzzie/american person.. :P ~Guy RIP TET "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." - Friedrich Nietzsche
March 17, 200719 yr Author Another thought crossed my mind. Do you call it a 'football' or a 'soccer ball'? ^Sir Jem 05-The Bunny Drinking Blog?^ Click it!
March 17, 200719 yr soccer because i am american Why does that matter? So just because you're from America, you have to follow the wrong norm? No, because if you said "hey, did you catch the football game last night?", 100% of everybody and their mothers will assume you meant american football. However same will go if you say "hey, catch the soccer game last night", you won't get an answer either :P Gamertag: King Arizona
March 17, 200719 yr Football! I'm originally from America, but I call 'soccer' football without even thinking about it. Main Goal; To have all skills 50+ My avatar is: The Shins- Oh Inverted World
March 17, 200719 yr Football, Football is the proper name for it, great game, kicking a ball round and into the back of the net is just great.
March 17, 200719 yr I say "Voetbal", which is the Dutch word for it. But directly translated it comes down to Football. Yes. Of course, what else. Soccer doesn't even make sense. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!
March 17, 200719 yr Being English I call it football, if im pretty sure if anyone called it soccer in England they would get punched in the arm  (Man City FTW!) Website Updates & Corrections | Website Discussion
March 17, 200719 yr soccer because i am american Why does that matter? So just because you're from America, you have to follow the wrong norm? Why not decide for yourself which makes more sense, and then call it whichever you choose? Sorry, but why is it 'wrong'? As mentioned before, there are very few positions in American Football which require you to use your feet. I could draw a direct comparison to hackey-sack. SOMETIMES you use your foot, so should that be called football too? Thats the logic American Football seems to have taken...
March 17, 200719 yr Being American I call it soccer, though I do referre to it as football from time to time. But American Football stole the name IMHO and should give it back. 8-) Rugby's where it's at anyways. : [i have a football question for anyone who knows Liverpool FC.] Me doing staff.
March 17, 200719 yr Soccer makes as much sense as tennis being called tennis. Frisbee called frisbee, hockey being called hockey.
March 17, 200719 yr Soccer makes as much sense as tennis being called tennis. Frisbee called frisbee, hockey being called hockey.I assume thats directed at me. If not, apologies. I don't think you've read what I wrote. Football should be called football, because it involves kicking a ball, with your foot. Americans, when they named American Football this, needed then a word to describe football. They chose soccer, the very old word for football. If the Americans hadn't chosen such an inapproproate name for their game, the whole need to call it soccer wouldn't have arisen. Where is the logic in calling American Football football?
March 17, 200719 yr Why do you call cricket, cricket? You're not batting a cricket around are you. You're not playing with rugs when you're playing rugby etc. It's a name, get over it eh? Gamertag: King Arizona
March 17, 200719 yr Why do you call cricket, cricket? You're not batting a cricket around are you. You're not playing with rugs when you're playing rugby etc. It's a name, get over it eh? Im not saying that any of those names are logical. Its just that completely inappropriate sports never steal those names for completely illogical reasons. And it's not just a name. It's the world's most popular sport, and is a massive part in many peoples' lives. I bet you'd be a fair bit pissed off if a new country was set up also called America?
March 18, 200719 yr soccer because i am american Why does that matter? So just because you're from America, you have to follow the wrong norm? Why not decide for yourself which makes more sense, and then call it whichever you choose? Sorry, but why is it 'wrong'? SOMETIMES you use your foot, so should that be called football too? Thats the logic American Football seems to have taken... You managed to ramble and rant without actually answering the question. Nice. So, again, why is it 'wrong' to call soccer "football"? Essentially, countries calling to 'fussball' and 'futeball' would be incorrect too, by this logic This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
March 18, 200719 yr I missed the question did I? As mentioned before, there are very few positions in American Football which require you to use your feet. I could draw a direct comparison to hackey-sack. SOMETIMES you use your foot, so should that be called football too? Thats the logic American Football seems to have taken... That's why its wrong. Because it is completely illogical. I'm sure there are very good reasons for cricket being cricket, and tennis being called tennis, etc, but can you honestly say you think it makes sense to call a game with very very little contact of the ball with one's foot, football?
March 18, 200719 yr I think you're misunderstanding me. I'm not asking why you want to call American Football by that name. Let's scrap that. I'm referring to this: soccer because i am american Why does that matter? So just because you're from America, you have to follow the wrong norm? Why not decide for yourself which makes more sense, and then call it whichever you choose? Sorry, but why is it 'wrong'? I'd like to know why you think calling football "soccer" wrong. If it's a genuine misunderstanding, then sorry for not being clear to begin with. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
March 18, 200719 yr Ah, i apologise, I did misunderstand. I see your point now. I suppose calling football soccer isnt wrong, but its just unnecessary, and annoys the hell out of me, and many people I know, for some reason. Why couldn't the Americans simply have made an appropriate name for their sport, call football football and just avoid this whole mess?
March 18, 200719 yr Americans did it just to annoy you. AHAHAHAHA ahem. I think nearly every person in the country who follows football dislikes the Americans using the name for their sport. I've seen several Britains in this thread already showing their distain for it, and I know many many people who would hurt a man for saying 'soccer'.

It's just a name, the game is still the same. "A rose by any other name" yak yak yak, you get my point. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
March 18, 200719 yr Well I guess i'm very passionate about the sport. Like I said at the top of this page, I dare say a lot of people would be up in arms if a new country was set up and decided to call itself America.

Like I said at the top of this page, I dare say a lot of people would be up in arms if a new country was set up and decided to call itself America. Bit of an exaggeration, mate. I admire your passion for the game, don't get me wrong, I just think there are quite a lot of more important issues that could be ruining 'the beautiful game' other than its name. Diving, Sepp Blatter, the new offside law etc. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
