jemathonical
Hey. I was reading the No more Draws Topic and thought of this topic. Do you call Soccer: Soccer or Football? I was brought up to call it soccer because in Australia football means Rugby League. I was curious to what you call soccer? ^Sir Jem 05-The Bunny Drinking Blog?^ Click it! remoteman
When u mention footy i can refer to either codes of rugby, or AFL. Soccer here, (obviously, we live in the same country lol.) I think Americans also call it soccer... "A disbelief in magic can force some poor souls into believing in authority and business"

Parabola
To me, football means a game in which the ball is controlled only using one's feet. Note for the pedantic: the goalkeeper is a valid exception. The game is still all about controlling the ball with one's feet, as evidenced by the punishments for using hands. Otherwise why would it be called football? I know very little about american football, but isn't the ball normally in people's hands?

I do call it soccer mostly though, it just sounds better. Tigra00
I really have no idea why we call it Football in America when it is more like Rugby than anything, but...*Shrug* The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past. - Me! RebelAssassin
i used to hate it when people called it soccer, but after i saw some footage of a very old match (pre WW2) the commentator called it soccer, so i guess it has been in use for many many years before it was introduced to the united states. www.PETAkillsanimals.com
Bubsa
I say 'Football' because that's what it's called in England. In America it could be said as 'Soccer' because of American Footie, in Oz because of Ozzie rules or whatever. The game might have been born in England, but that doesn't mean anyone terming of the game is 'more correct' than the other. They're just different derivitives, that's all. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.

pompey_spud
Football all the way, I've never called it 'soccer' in my life, and it does greatly annoy me to hear it called that. However, like Rebel, I did see a documentary of pre-war football, and the commentator reffered to it as 'soccer', do my distaste of the word did lessen slightly. I don't know why we call it soccer but we do, and it is not going to change. In american football, it is mostly in your hand (although there is a kicker). pompey_spud
soccer because i am american Why does that matter? So just because you're from America, you have to follow the wrong norm? Why not decide for yourself which makes more sense, and then call it whichever you choose?

The_Dragon_Reborn
To be frank, I don't understand why us Americans stuck with 'soccer.' I think soccer has been a sport longer then we have been a country. :-k Although I am a much bigger fan of American Football, then I am of Soccer, I can't possibly think of a reason as to why we call it Football. There is a maximum of 3 Kicking positions in American Football, and everyone in Soccer kicks the ball. Makes no sense to me, but whatever. ~~Let The Dragon ride again, on the winds of time~~I've always felt as if I'm the only person who can understand the concept of sarcasm on the internet.
