my computer kind of blew up, and won't start?

Featured Replies

well my computer had start-up problems for the past month(every time i started it up, it shut down. i had to do this 10 or so tries before it would actually get going]. today, though, i tried it, and showed my mom what happens. everything was normal. on about the fourth try, it just didn't start. i tried again, same thing happened.

i unplugged the power chord from the back, i pushed the 2 little switches[ the first is the black one, that has two positions- "--" and "O"- and the next is a red slider that slides into two positions- something like "151", and "241"].

i adjusted these to all 4 possible position combinations, none of them did anything differently. my last try ended with the black power switch on off. i turned the black switch back on, and the red slider back to it's original position, "151".

so i tried one last time, and a giant spark came out of the processor fan[ when i say "came out", i mean it happened internally, but i saw it]. it smoked for a second, but stopped as soon as it had started. i unplugged it, and i am having one of my moms friends[a freaking computer GENIUS!] come over and recommend something. is there anything i can try in the meantime?

Quite simply, Facebook craps on Myspace. Then makes it eat the crap.

Try a new power supply and pray that the spark didnt fry your motherboard.

Yes, avoid trying to start your computer.

I never understood people who kept on trying to start their computer after OBVIOUSLY something didn't function properly, at least you should have checked what's wrong, not forcing it to start.

Ummmm....something is wrong with your power supply. Don't start our computer! My best advice is....wait for it....Call the Geek Squad!

Geek Squad is sadly over priced. Charging $129 to install software and $229 to install windows (which is a simple click and wait) is ridiculous. The horror stories surrounding their hardware service make me cringe too.

It's already been said by at least 3 people that it's a power supply problem.

Agreed. As much as the staff will deny it (omg you're singling out users!!11!1), it's needed to stop stupid advice that could potentially destroy hardware (suggesting removing heat syncs to fix over heating problems come to mind...).

Another one that I see all the time and no one corrects is telling someone to remove the case cover to theoretically lower the case temperature. That will do just the opposite though, it ruin the designed airflow on a computer case since the intake will blow air in creating slightly higher pressure and the exhaust will blow the how air out creating slightly lower pressure in the case. If you remove the case then it will not work like designed.

On Topic: You shouldn't touch the red slider thing because it will cause it to expect a current of another country such as the US having 120 V and Europe having around 200V not to mention a different frequency. Good luck on getting the computer fixed and hope that the PSU was the problem with the original problem and it didn't fry your mother board.

Removing the side panel on a case would drop the temps because the computer will have cooler air to move around to the components. If you don't know already, room temperature air is almost always cooler than the air inside your pc.

If you have a fan on the side panel of the case and then remove the panel, you probably would raise the temps because thats one less fan.

You do have a point. Removing the cover can hurt air flow and cooling, but it does have it place when case fans aren't pushing air threw the case properly and the case itself starts collecting heat. Removing the panel would let that hot air escape on it's own, cooling the machine.

Yes it isn't as efficient as a properly designed case with good airflow, but it will help cases with poor airflow that collect hot air. I'm more against people posting advice that will actually break things. Removing the case panel doesn't result in anything harmful and can actually help in certain circumstances.

You should have got someone to look at it before. You just have to hope it didn't fry your motherboard.
