Cruise Ship Actually Sinks!

Featured Replies

That would be a sweet experience, as long as no one got hurt... :)

The 22,412-ton Sea Diamond, run by Louis Cruise Lines, ran aground just minutes away from the shore of the picturesque island, one of Greece's most popular tourists destinations. It listed and was evacuated within a few hours.

44,824,000 pounds!?! I know cruise ships are massive, but that's just insane.

compared to most cruise ships, 22,412 tons is very small. 500 feet is also small. the avarage large cruise ship today is around 100k tons and 1000 feet. besides, no body was hurt.

Cars still crash. Plane's still crash. Rockets still crash. Trains still crash.

Why would a boat be exempt from failure?

The technological advances we have made is shown through the number of survivors we now have when something like that happens.

A boat that weighs over a billion pounds and a 2-ton truck are quite different

Size does not equal safety. Period.

Everything fails, it's a fact of life...

I thought you were too mature to post on these message boards.

Hehehe :P

I was actually thinking of swallowing my fear of aquaphobia and going on a cruise with the girlfriend.

Now, I'll just panic.

You're afraid of being afraid of water?? :ohnoes: :ohnoes:

Floating hotels are ugly, they are giant boxes like Freedom of the Seas. Now, the Queen Mary II, that's a strikingly beautiful ship. <3: That's how ships should be built, but alas, transatlantic/transpacific isn't very common now-a-days, and it's all about fitting everything you can on the ship, instead of making a beautiful looking streamline liner.

Wait... what? You're kidding right? Did you just call the Freedom ugly? :shame:

Picture comparison is a must at this point:

Of this old old barge. Oh wait, it's the Queen Mary 2. My bad.

I'v been on multiple ships from RCCL, Princess, Carnival, and Celebrity ranging from 20,000 to 140,000 tons. Its amazing that one could sink, and while it would suck to loose everything you brought with you, personally I would find it an adventure worth the trouble. No real danger of dying, it took 15 hours to sink. I mean, just get outside and you're safe. Your in the Mediterranean so the rescue ships were there in less than an hour I'm guessing. Heck, if worst comes to worst just jump in wearing your life jacket (the water is warm near Greece, unlike in the Titanic). Once in the water swim over to any of the hundreds of rescue boats that were probably there.

Freedom is an overcrowded monster. It's a white box with an ugly bow and fat box like stern decks. Now QM2, that's a liner. With her black hull and beautiful curved bow, she sails the sea like no other. On top of that she reminisces of the great ships of the past. I'm glad Celebrity Cruises is following in it's footsteps, especially with the use of a black hull.

You had bad pictures, try these:

Viktor, yours is like one part. Besides, it's a cruise! You wont see it from that far away once you're on it. Trapical's pictures looked great.

Trix.--quit WoW as of 12/07

Thank you 4be2jue for the wonderful sig and avatar!

My IQ was feeling too high, so I decided to browse the forums a bit.

What's that supposed to mean?

Alright then, Trapical beat this elegance:

More private swimming pool, one of two:

It beats Freedom's crowded economic plan and interior by far. Queen Mary 2 is more than a cruise ship built for tourism to travel to ports, it is a transatlantic ocean liner built to be a hotel for a week or so voyage.

^ It will never beat the original Queen Mary.

Anyway it really stinks especially for the owners of the vessal when these floating towns get sunk.

I can just imagine their local diving club having a party...

A friend to all is a friend to none.

Gah, do you people never read those phobia threads :P

Yes, I have aquaphobia. Quite terrible aquaphobia. No, I'm not scared of showers <.< baths are er...a bit...anyway.

I can't swim, I've technically drowned twice in my life (second time I got CPR of a woman I had a crush one for 2 years after), aquaphobia: not fun, kids.

Have you ever seen pictures of the inside of a Royal Caribbean liner, Viktor? They are absolutely elegant and far from "economic."

But it is sooo overcrowded. The wait for the new surf thing is so long it can take upwards of a few hours before you ride it, what a waste, and the pool as well is usually crowded. And lots of people equals kids running around and diseases being spread. Many of the top cruise critics have even called this ship overcrowded, and that ruins anything else it had going for it.

BTW they are not Liner's, they are Cruise Ships. Liners service like planes and ferries and trains. Cruise Ships travel to ports of call.

My uncle and his wife went on the ship. I trust their opinion, so that doesn't entitle me to an opinion?

I've been on a small cruise ship off of Florida. I have not been on the Freedom, but my close relatives have and I trust their opinion.

I went on Sovereign 2 weeks after it was remodeled. That's the ship I was talking about, I consider it small because most of its sisters, Liberty, Freedom are much bigger.

Of course it was nice, and I enjoyed it. But there is better out there.

First off, the Sovereign isn't in the same family as the Liberty and Freedom.

Second off - do you think, in your experience, that the Royal Caribbean ships are "economic?"
