Viktorkrum77
I myself cannot believe this, a real modern cruise ship actually sank. The Sea Diamond struck a volcanic coral reef while on a cruise around Greece, and all the passengers have been rescued except 2 French passengers who are unknown. The ship sank 15 hours after taking on water sometime this morning. When the ship struck the reef it tilted half way to 90 degrees, and passengers evacuated amongst flying glass and furniture. Full article here: http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/04 ... index.html This for me is hard to fathom. I mean, this cruise ship is full of modern technology, TV's, computers, a night club full of expensive lights and DJ equipment, restaurants, shops, a casino full of money :P, numerous cabins, lounges, a professional galley, etc, and all this flew everywhere with the tilt, and now it's all underwater. What an eerie site that must be. It'd be like looking at your house underwater rotting and rusting. The whole ship actually capsized while half way above water and half way under, meaning everything went UPSIDE DOWN, that's crazy IMHO. The idea of it all is actually pretty cool. Like the movie Poseidon. :D Me doing staff.
Adam007
Is the reef alright? Sorry, that was bad. You're right though. It is freaky that something like that can happen in this day in age. At least with modern technology most people were saved, but this kind of stuff should not happen. Titanic was one thing, but even modern cars have alerts when you're about to hit an object that's close.
Viktorkrum77
I would assume since it was near and island that the reef was pretty big, so I'm sure it's ok. Yea, they're looking for possible terrorists and interviewing the captain and his assistants and such. Me doing staff.
np_tyler
That would be a sweet experience, as long as no one got hurt... :) The 22,412-ton Sea Diamond, run by Louis Cruise Lines, ran aground just minutes away from the shore of the picturesque island, one of Greece's most popular tourists destinations. It listed and was evacuated within a few hours. 44,824,000 pounds!?! I know cruise ships are massive, but that's just insane. - Np Tyler
The_Dragon_Reborn
Well, the Titanic did sink, and it was the biggest and most modern boat of its time, so whats so different about this? Granted, it is a bit more advanced, but the same principles still apply. Icebergs and Reefs always win. ~~Let The Dragon ride again, on the winds of time~~I've always felt as if I'm the only person who can understand the concept of sarcasm on the internet. That ship is tiny compared to the 148,528 ton Queen Mary II and 154,407 ton Freedom of the Seas. Here's some additional info: She ran aground on 5 April 2007 within the caldera of the Greek island of Santorini, began taking on water, and listed up to 12 degrees before her watertight doors were closed. Her 1,195 passengers, mostly Americans, were all reported to be safely evacuated with no injuries. The ship was towed off the rocks, and its list stabilized. Later, it was reported that two French passengers were missing. Unfortunately the severity of the water input finally led the cruise ship to sink shortly before 7 a.m. (04:00 GMT) on 6 April 2007, in water around 200 metres deep within the submerged caldera of the volcanic island Me doing staff. dsavi
RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU'VE BEEN ON A CRUISE SHIP. *Raises hand* They are literally floating luxury hotels. They ferry around 4000 people from Finland to Sweden daily. Casinos, bars, resteraunts, swimming pools, gaming rooms , confrence rooms, etc. Google image 'Silja Europa'. I've been on it. And it is roughly the same size as the, what was it, Sea diamond. That won't be good for whatever company owned it.
How2PK
The movie Poseidon was everything but cool. :P But yea, these things still happen, Viktor. Floating hotels are ugly, they are giant boxes like Freedom of the Seas. Now, the Queen Mary II, that's a strikingly beautiful ship. That's how ships should be built, but alas, transatlantic/transpacific isn't very common now-a-days, and it's all about fitting everything you can on the ship, instead of making a beautiful looking streamline liner. The movie Poseidon was everything but cool. :P What? Lol, I just love mass destruction especially on that sort of scale, and in that sort of familiar backdrop (mostly the capsize). Me doing staff. venomai
Well, the Titanic did sink, and it was the biggest and most modern boat of its time, so whats so different about this? Modern cruise ships usually have enough lifeboats to hold all the passengers. :| That would be a sweet experience, as long as no one got hurt... :) Oh god it really wouldn't... I got back from a cruise a while ago. A week after I got back, literally the trip right after mine, the ship almost capsized. As it tilted, glass was sent down the halls. TV's in your room and bunk beds would come tumbling down fast. Water from the pools spilled out and started flooding the area. It managed to right itself after a few minutes, but in that time there were over 25 people injured. Turns out it was because an old man was having a heart attack, so the captain decided to make a very tight turn to get back to land. The tight turn to save one man's life risked hundreds more and caused massive amounts of damage to the ship. I'm glad I wasn't on the ship. Bubsa
I was actually thinking of swallowing my fear of aquaphobia and going on a cruise with the girlfriend. Now, I'll just panic. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.

I thought Poseidon's capsize was a very rare occurance. Did you hear what happened to the Crown Princess? It's crazy, I can't believe no one died, thank God for railings. Those pictures are really cool BTW. Princess Cruises has really bad luck. They've had a serious fire, and now 2 lists, one of the maiden voyage of a new ship and that same one almost being a capsize. Defender2516
Technology increases effiecency and saftey, but your never 100% safe. Since when could a TV or casino have to do with anything to prevent a ship from sinking? Yup, seems hard to swallow, but hopefully its a reality that people will grasp, that technology cannot save you as much as you thought it could. ~Defender~ If you love me, send me a PM. 8 - Love me2 - Hate me

Viktorkrum77
Since when could a TV or casino have to do with anything to prevent a ship from sinking? It doesn't, I was saying that it's hard to fathom everyday objects/modern day amenities/etc, such as the above being tossed around everywhere while the ship lists and then being completly submerged in water and then rotting and rusting. I mean, I can look at pictures of the Titanic before and after, but technology that effects my life daily now submerged under water to be left to rot is just a hard concept grasp. Me doing staff.
