You can manually desaturate it in any decent imaging program. The GIMP should suffice, however if you're on a course you might have access to PS. In which case you could shoot in RAW and convert it to black and white there - less lossy than converting JPEGs.

Hey guys i've been taking pictures for a long time but only recently started taking a genuine interest in it.

So i got myself a Nikon D70 and decided to take photography as a college course, however after an email from my teacher i have to be able to take photos in black and white and sepia...

I know how to do that on the computer but she told me i had to do it on the camera - i bought the camera before the course though and i don't want to buy a new one just for these purposes.

Anyone know how to do it? - Please pm me replies - thank you so much!

I think it's a bit unlikely that a course tutor would penalise those who choose to have a FULL COLOUR ORIGINAL and convert it to sepia later. Why would they limit the use of a photo like that? If you ask me I would shoot in RAW and convert to a sepia JPEG. It probably won't be known that you did that and that way you've got the full colour RAW file for later. The tutor is an idiot. Very strange...

EDIT: By the way, I would recommend looking up your user manual - I'm not too sure of how to do that with my own camera, let alone a different make and model. Sorry

He simply wants you to get used to shooting in black and white, which is understandable.

If you really cant shoot in sepia/black and white, just convert the photos to sepia and b+w later on.

He wont see the difference, and I think Lightroom 2 can convert many images into a certain color so that could help you too.

Here be couple of questions:

1. I have bought couple of Photography magazines and I'm willing to subscribe one (so I get them to my home). What are the best magazines in your opinnion? I think the best are Digital Photo and Practical Photography. So, any favourites?

2. I'm also going to buy a new lens. I already have a 18-55mm (included) and 70-300mm. What would be the one for next. I'm thinking a close-up one (I don't know the mm's). But what do you think?

3. Then about filters. I have none at the moment. What are the must have ones? Sepia? I don't know. Tell me

4. Camera Bag. That would be great also. I was going to buy one of the National Geographic ones. Clicky. What do you think?

5. Camera. Should I get something bit more advanced than Nikon d40 or is it good?

Yes, I'm buying a lot of stuff. But I have extra money now (Confirmation presents + all of my allowances and other work money [i've never spend any of them :D ])

Well yeah, that's about it.

Thanks in advance,

RM

1. I havent got a clue what those magazines are like, I mostly read Zoom.nl which is a dutch magazine, probably the best mag around. (Zoom.nl is the name of the magazine, but its a mag and website in one)

2. You could try to do some research on lenses that replace your kitlens if you use it alot, there are alot of better alternatives available that are alot sharper and probably with the f2.8 possibility. If you are into macro photography, you could buy some macro filters which are a cheap alternative for a real macro lens but they arent that good if you are serious enough. If you want to do it all right in once, get a true macro lens.

3. Simple: Get a circular polarizer. Those things can cost alot, but they are worth it. Ive got this one, the screen doesnt become as black as his though :)

4. Hmm.. NGC is very known at photographers mainly for their magazines, but I do recommend another one. Take a look at Lowepro bags, those bags are probably the best ones around. They are weather proof, cold/heat proof, very protective. I bought a ''mini trekker classic'''and I will not need a new one for the next 10 years or so. And you might also get a weather-bag to cover your bag with in extreme weather conditions, for free.

5. Its good for now. I dont think you need any more MP, noise, or frames per second. Push your D40 to its limits, and learn from it until you really need a new body.

I found Digital SLR to be very interesting and informative, it's not one of those "Photography for beginners" ones that I keep running in to.

I realize that it's been ages since someone last post here but I'm hoping that someone with a little bit of knowledge in photography still looks here.

You see, I blindly ran into photography, grabbed the first slr camera there was to offer. (The cheapest, a Nikon D40 at £319.99). I bought it because we were going to India and I wanted to take some decent pictures and this was a good opportunity to do so but alas, I didn't use the camera to it's full extent.

Now, a year later, I've decided get back into photography. I wanted to upgrade from my Nikon and maybe make a transaction onto Canon but there's not enough money to do that. I read that using other Nikon lenses will restrict you to using manual focus mode and not all lenses are compatible. A set back. So I think it would be best not to buy any lenses for this right? So I thought of other things I could buy and one thing I came up with is a filter.

Now I don't know much about filters but I was hoping that someone could tell me. I read on the internet that it was an inner ring that screws onto the lenses with an adapter ring that goes on the end of a lens? I'm already confusing myself. I just need a little knowledge then I'll be confident enough to go out a buy the right one.

Additionally, I could just adjust pictures on photoshop but I'm not familiar with it anymore.

A Filter is a ring which screws onto the end of the lense, essentially.

They do different things, UV Filters reduce haze

Polarising filters darken the edges or corners, depending if they're "Square" or "circular", and reduce water-reflections.

and you can also get colour-tinted filters too.

They don't really do much, and are quite expensive, but if you can pick one up for about £20 or $40ish thats a fair deal.

I use a polarising filter for most of my shots, but that's because I do regular SLR in a darkroom, so I don't have access to photoshop etc. (For most of my course anyway)

I hope that helps :)

Okay, here be another question:

Yes, I know, I'm dumb, but here it is. Everytime I take photos in a low light (night shots, light trails etc.) The picture becomes some sort of orange and brown. Is there anyhow I could make it real colored?

Thanks, if you get what I'm saying.

I went out and tried something like that on Saturday night to see if I could get it to work.

Put your camera on manual, set the ISO as low as you can which on the D40X (You have a D40X right?) I believe is also 200. Set the shutter speed to about 6-8 seconds and the aperture to around 7. Use a tripod lol. Or at least, that's what I've seemed to get as the best settings for my camera pointing at street lights maybe a bit off in the distance. The closer you get, of course, the shorter the shutter speed.

Check the white balance. That's what I'd go for first, but low ISO + mid aperture is always good too. Remember to use the NR function if you have it to reduce noise. Good luck!

Haha, that reminded me of this situation..

A friend of mine and I were shooting at night, and he noticed that his camera took like 2 minutes to save the photo. (He has a 400D)

Some days later, after going to a camera shop where they said he had to send it back to Canon, he found out that he had his noise reduction on. So his camera multiplied his shutter speeds by 2, if he made a photo at 30 seconds, his camera would need at least 1 minute to reduce the noise+save it.

To be honest, I dont think you need NR if you shoot at 200 ISO. But I am not used to other peoples cameras, I just wouldnt do it myself. (To be sure, test it by using the same settings with and without NR. And show me the difference :P )

As for the white balance, use 'Tungsten' if you can. Its a small light-bulb icon, and it cools down the colors alot but they look alot more real.
