July 31, 200718 yr As some of you might remember, I'm working at SYSOPENDIGIA as an UI Prototyping Engineer. That's basically pure actionscript coding, but when the boss isn't watching (or on vacation), I try to have some fun doing a lil graphics. Since I'm bound by a pesky NDA, I can't show you guys very much at all, but here is a lil something I cooked up today. It's pretty simple... about 100 lines of code (yes, even my graphics come with code... *sigh* (actually, where are the "graphics")). Anyway... Check out the marvelous "ripple" here... http://www.elias.pietila.fidisk.fi/ripple.html EDIT: New version, check reply for new keys http://www.elias.pietila.fidisk.fi/ripple2.html EDIT: More realistic steering. Now with improved effects and a couple of fixes. http://www.elias.pietila.fidisk.fi/ripple3.html EDIT: Better wave dynamics and some buoys to knock around. http://www.elias.pietila.fidisk.fi/ripple4.html It will work like crap on anything less than a core duo computer with a decent graphics card, but don't let that discourage you. To get about + 100% FPS, you should run it in stand-alone Flash Player instead of a browser window. (get the FlashPlayer for free from adobe if you don't have it) controls... up arrow : gas side arrows: turn down arrow: break page up: add more rain (those are some HUGE drops) page down: get rid of the frigging rain, as it kills my comp home: + 5 "higher" waves (original == 40) end: - 5 "lower" waves (or if you go beyond 0... higher waves) enter: advertisement delete: change from paradise colored water to oddly-realistic-looking orange. To test out your computer, hit home a few tens of times and hold down enter. Now try cruising around. :) Have fun trying in out. Tell me what you think
July 31, 200718 yr Author Yes, it seems tip.it won't allow posting of swf files. I put it into a .hmtl page. http://www.elias.pietila.fidisk.fi/ripple.html But you should DL it and use it locally for optimal performance.
August 1, 200718 yr This is awesome! How long did it take you!? This is so cool! You should make this into like a racing game or something :) To test out your computer, hit home a few tens of times and hold down enter. Now try cruising around. :) I did it, and I was still able to cruise around, although it was a little laggy :
August 1, 200718 yr Wow, that's pretty shiny . Truthscape - qeltar's excellent insights into RuneScape and moreCave Story - Best Free RPG ever-Retired. Forever-
August 1, 200718 yr Author I had 0% lagg and my computer sucks lol. You should expand the map. It calculates a 9 point convolution on the whole picture three times per frame (for starters), so expanding the "play area" will affect performance immensly. Making it scroll could be possible, yet a bit tricky. New version btw. Added some waves, some effects when hitting waves (higher you are, bigger you look). http://www.elias.pietila.fidisk.fi/ripple2.html new keys: insert: Higher waves from top. delete: Lower waves from top. Backspace: The old delete. Changes colors. Shift: Random colors for water. Better, worse? And finally a version with "realistic" boat movement. Looks a bit goofy though. But now you can go in reverse etc.. EDIT: I fixed the graphics issues. Now it's smooth and sweet. http://www.elias.pietila.fidisk.fi/ripple3.html
August 1, 200718 yr impressive. Now if i knew how to do stuff like that, i would make flash games all the time :D axeraider70.deviantART.com
August 4, 200718 yr Author I guess the forums are dying down based on the reply count. :boohoo: :-k Yes, prove me wrong.
August 4, 200718 yr Very nice!! The water looks great, and the animation is really cool. You could expand the map, and add some ramps, or maybe a track to drive in? http://jdpr.deviantart.com/
August 6, 200718 yr Author Well, The funs over. Starting on a Nokia project now so I don't have time to make this into a game or anything. If anyone is interested I can post a semi commented sourcecode. Anyways, heres the last version. Better wave dynamics and buoys to knock around. Might be a lot more demanding on the computer due to random mess ups. http://www.elias.pietila.fidisk.fi/ripple4.html
