Greek wildfires kill 49, threaten ancient ruins

Featured Replies

I was under the impression that it was 50, but alright then.

Bad, but most countries have had their fair share of fires like that.

I like how they're offering $13,000 to people who lost relatives.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

Yeah it says property as well, but even then it hardly compensates for their loss does it, especially in the case of relatives.

Sig by me....

I think it's unfortunate but inevitable.

A friend to all is a friend to none.

My parents are currently in Greece for a one week trip with people they work with (they work in the same company) and my mother told me it was raining ash yesterday...

Luckily there is no risk they get into danger, the fire is far away.

It's be really sad if the ruins of Olympia were lost. They're one of the most important historical sites in the world - pretty much the earliest proof that athletics transcend political and national differences.

That wont make them feel much better...

At least the government is acknowledging their grief. Obviously the money won't bring the lost loved ones back, but it is still a good measure for practical reasons, since the money will help families who have lost their means to support themselves survive and help the local economy recover faster. It's better than nothing.
