Nul_Oblivion
It's been several months since I've been on RuneScape but earlier in the week (during some down time between college and work) I decided to log on to my old account. It's an F2P account with 60 Attack, 70 Strength, and 60 Defence. I figured since I'm starting to play periodically again I should go for level 99 in a combat stat. Well, I've chosen to go for 99 Strength in F2P, but I'm not sure how to go about this in the most efficient way. What enemies should I fight, what kind of food should I use, and how much will it roughly cost me in the long-run to achieve this goal? I know it'll take much longer than it would in P2P, but that's kinda the point; it makes it even more challenging. So if anyone can provide some tips to make this go a lot more smoothly, please do! Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Retired Member
jimi2424
in f2p i think flesh crawlers are great exp along with giant spiders (both in the sos). I like to go to karamja and buy cooked tuna from the general store for 30ea. They heal 10 and are quite economical. Kebabs arent bad if your into that kind of thing too  Some people will bring a rod and go fish for salmon or whatever right outside the sos but i just snag some tuna and bank it until i have a decent amount then go train. I don't know how long this will take but for me, flesh crawlers give around 36000exp and dont hit too often so they would probably be cheaper. When they stop attacking, (10minutes) i usually have around 6-6.8k exp more then i go through the portal/ladders and back to the treasure room and back to the flesh crawlers because i dont like to click :-w
Nul_Oblivion
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, if I remember correctly, I was training on Flesh Crawlers before I left RS for a while. I just couldn't remember if the experience per hour was worth training on them the whole time. Would they be sufficient enough to train on them from now until I hit 99? mchainmail
They are good for a while. If you are trying to max out in f2p (or don't care about keeping your prayer level low) the ice plateau in the wildy is really good and it is almost always deserted. mockme_14
I'm not going to give you places to train, because those have bot been talked about. For the ice plateau, dont go unless you have atleast 70 atk and def. Also, no matter what you do, get your atk and def up to atleast 70, as this will lower training costs by a longshot. GOOD LUCK! Fekambard
Also Spiders (Level 50) on the 3rd floor of SoS. Quite good xp too.
Dumbledore
From what ive heard, Spiders and Fleshies give about the same xp per hour, but spiders use up more food. Ice Giants are good. Can't seem to find the guide :?
Mat
flesh crawlers are good, i got a few 100k exp there. But honestly, get p2p, f2p traning is so slow, and i found that out the hard way. :( . Couldn't stand f2 even for 3 days.

I'm living on my own and don't really have the extra $5.00 per month (I know, money's tight right now). Plus, accomplishing this on F2P would give me a greater sense of mastery anyway. But thanks for all the replies. I guess I'll stick with Flesh Crawlers for now. I'm not really in any hurry, I just wanted to put my patience and focus to the test. Thanks again! Crimsonsmash
you could also try mossies on crandor
Codguy
You could kill Moss Giants or Lesser Demons on Karamja/Crandor and then go to the docks and fish some lobs and cook them there, without banking. This is how I trained in f2p (got 95 combat before switching to Members), this is now slower than the SoS creatures, but this way you get a plentiful amount of money (gp, mith/steel items, rune meds - bring some natures then). I made a couple mil (my main way back then) training there for a while. So I'd say Lessers for xp + money, or SoS creatures for xp by itself (more). davidium
for f2p i would suggest choosing a few monsters and then training on each one for a couple of days before switching to another to keep away the boredom... maxed out melee on 10/10/08, current goal: 94/99 cookinglife may be unfair, but why can't it be unfair in my favor?my fake plant died because i forgot to pretend to water it
Nul_Oblivion
for f2p i would suggest choosing a few monsters and then training on each one for a couple of days before switching to another to keep away the boredom... Haha yeah, I was beginning to think that myself. I'll probably just switch between Flesh Crawlers and Lesser Demons in the Crandor volcano whenever I start to get extremely bored. Another question: Would bringing along a few Strength Potions speed up training a little? I figured if I can hit higher than normal the training might go a little faster, I just wasn't sure if shaving a few minutes off of training is worth the space in my bag for food. I was reading somewhere that some guy recommended using Strength Potions for training Strength, but I don't know if it's really worth it or not in the long run. Thank you, Retired Member
Fekambard
Of course Pots would help, since hitting higher means more xp, but in the long run to 99, it would cost abit much, 1K per pot... :-k

Goobore
... I've chosen to go for 99 Strength in F2P, but I'm not sure how to go about this in the most efficient way. You earn melee exp according to Exp = HitDone*4 If you hit a 2 on a lumbridge rat then you would earn 8 exp. If you hit a 2 on a wildy greater demon then you would earn the exact same 8 exp. So, the most efficient training comes from hitting some monster(s) "constantly". The level doesn't really matter. What enemies should I fight, Well, obviously, monsters that are a lot lower than you will be easy to hit and, hence, provide steady exp. what kind of food should I use, If you select the right monster(s) to train on, then you won't need much food at all. If you select lower level monsters for the steady exp that they offer, then you get the side benefit of taking very little damage yourself. That way, you won't need much food, (if any), at all. and how much will it roughly cost me in the long-run to achieve this goal? A full load of trout can last you many days if you train on lowbies. So, food cost is not an issue. I know it'll take much longer than it would in P2P, but that's kinda the point; it makes it even more challenging. Personally, I'd rather have fun during the few hours that I get to play. (Instead of having to spend that time grinding...) So if anyone can provide some tips to make this go a lot more smoothly... Train by slaughtering lowbies in the SoS. The idea is to be hitting something, constantly. Lowbies are easy to hit and won't hurt much, if at all. That way, you won't need much food. The 1st and 2nd levels of the Sos have rooms crowded full of fast respawning lower level monsters. You can spend hours and hours down there killing non-stop for good exp. The fleshcrawlers are good to use. Hope this helps
Nul_Oblivion
Thanks Goobore, that was helpful. I definitely see your logic on having fun during your gameplay rather than level-grinding as a chore, but any kind of leveling requires dedication to a specific thing that can get tedious. I do plan on taking little breaks here and there (every 5-10 levels) to do something else besides melee training. I'm a pretty focused person, but everyone needs a little break every once in a while. Great feedback; very supportive! I plan to start this "challenge" once I make some more money (just for the sake of having it). The only thing I kept when I quit about 3-4 months ago was my money. When I left, I didn't bother to really sell anything so I gave most of my stuff away to new players and hosted a small drop party. I started playing again with approximately 5.1M coins and decided to make some more (I'm now up to 6.2M). I know it's not much now days, but hey, I've been a free player the entire time.
