kelem_ryu
The word Emo is fairly new to me. I guess i first heard it about 3 to 4 years ago. Yet the concept sounds pretty familar to me. I guess i am/was what would be labeled an Emo myself already 10 years ago. So i wonder when did this term evolve, when did this "movement" (if it can be called that way) start? People delving in melancholy can hardly be something new after all. (Smashing Pumpkins - Melanie Chollie and the infinite sadness... anybody?) Nom
Somehow we got to Emo=cutter, and now Emo is a derogative term to most people. And I don't know anything else about that :P . Except that I hate Emo music.

deloriagod
Everyone here is an emo basher except for a select few of us who are more tolerant of others. Emo is basically a fashion scene an style of music. Emo kids aren't really depressed, the just act like it for the attention. Long black hair (often with colorful highlights), tight band t-shirts, and tight jeans is generally how they dress. And it seems to me almost every punk band is labeled as emo. People say they don't like emo music, but what they really mean is they don't like punk. Also, emo people have gotten the rep that they're all cutters. Cutting can be a stress relief for people who are depressed and since emo is considered depression (to the biased majority), they're all cutters. If you want to talk more feel free to PM me. People in general is my interest, and informing people is my pleasure. Internet Marketing For Newbies
Bubsa
The word seemed to evolve around here when the word chav came to prominensce. People needed to find a word for the other kind of youth, the one that wore eye-liner over burberry and listened to pop-rock instead of hip-hop. Emo stepped up. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.

Ah, that's better. >.< and @ bubs... chavs listen to hiphop? where the hell are you from? Liverpool, home of chav? Yeah, hip-hop. Going on about petty crime and rolling up the biggest blunt, that's right up chav's street. If you think it's dance and happy hardcore, well that's a common misconception. That's for pill heads, which I like to pretend I am once in a while. But I'd say definately, Hip-hop is the music of chav choice - only the crap stuff mind, ala 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks. kelem_ryu
Hm.. guess i'm a bit Emo then, if such a term can be applied to a 25 year old (then again in my mind i'm still 13 anyway.). Guess the Emo is a bit diluted though, because part of my friends between 15 and 20 were pretty much into this gangster thing, evolved into the techno scene though. Where does techno fit into this? Or is it not as popular in the US as it is here? What exactly is a chav?

deloriagod
emo = american word for goth basically, Incorrect. Emos and goths are similar to an extent but they have their differences. Emos don't wear huge black pants covered in chains. Goth band t-shirts are 2 sizes too big. Goths generally listen to heavy metal (e.g. Slayer, Slipknot, System of a Down, etc). Goths generally have a lot more piercings (snake bite, monroe, corset, nose, tongue, nipple, ect) and many guage their piercings (which hurts like hell, don't try it unless you can handle that pain -trust me, I got a tattoo and guaging my ear hurt more-). Things like that divide emo and goth. Internet Marketing For Newbies

Zonorhc
Emo kids piss me off for the simple fact that they're overprivileged slime that act depressed for no reason other than attention and conformity, despite vehemently denying the latter. They, along with chavs and "gangstas" will be among the first to be transported into the sun when I conquer the universe. Not everybody has as thick a skin as you obviously have. The world isn't exactly a nice place. It might be true that there are emos that are just conformists, yet the fact remains that the world isn't such a great place that everybody is happy and everything is sunshine. If that would be the case, there wouldn't be any emos. EDIT: I already asked: WTF is a "chav"?

If that would be the case, there wouldn't be any emos. EDIT: I already asked: WTF is a "chav"? Nah, being a teenager just causes one to overexaggerate things. In the past, maybe two years ago, I had an "emo attitude" (i.e., didn't dress in black or anything), just grew out of it. I was emo not because my life sucked, but because I just thought my life sucked. Albeit, I was under a fair amount of stress between homework and athletics at the time of the phase, but it was really nothing more than a phase. Wana know the funny reason why self insults don't work on me anymore? 'Cause while I was in the phase, I used them all the time. "I hate myself", "I'm worthless", "I'm useless in the world", you name it, I said it 100+ times a night during the phase. Now, even if I want to say it, it literally has no meaning thanks to overuse in the past  . So ya, it's a phase, they get over it after teenagerhood at the latest. Now, I can see people really being "goth" for extended periods of time, it not being a phase at all. Emo? Not really...
