Signatures? (when will they be officially evaluated?)

Featured Replies

Well I know you probably get these posts time and time again, but why are your limits so low? (Kb) if you want a light weight forum (one that loads fast) why are you using phpBB in the first place?

Couldn't the Kb limit be updated? (it would take like 20 seconds to implement)

With such low Kb ratio people with cool looking sigs can't show them off.

Eg:

3___hit___u.png3___hit___u.png

3___hit___u.png3___hit___u.png

3___hit___u.png3___hit___u.png

3___hit___u.png3___hit___u.png3___hit___u.png3___hit___u.png

See my point?

The one in my sig has been lowered in quality, and you can tell by it because it looks terrible.

People are not here to view your signatures or your avatars. They are supposed to be here for the discussions. The signatures are a convenience provided by the administrators to help make yours posts more distinguishable. You should not need more than 30kb to make a distinguishable picture to identify yourself.

Either way, these limits will not be evaluated for another year at least, since they were just reevaluated earlier this year.

Also, the reason why the limits are so low is because a good handful of people on our forums are on dial-up connections, and loading signatures like the ones you demonstrated (I noticed one was 70kb) would take a long while. Assume that we allow 15 posts per page (which I think is phpbb default). Assume everyone on that page then had a 70kb signature. Multiply that by 15 and you have 1050kb to load. That takes a long while to load on dial-up, and in some cases, it tries to load the images before the text.

In short, the limits are low so that the discussion takes priority over the images.

don't worry, you are going to "hell" anyway. wanna race to see who gets there first?

php:BB has certain features that are useful to the community, using them would take away those features. You would have to be much more driven to reduce load times if you wanted to take them away.

One of the thing that I noticed about load time and images, is the speed of the host servers. e.g. IMGspot is quite slow. Maybe we could do something about that?

(e.g. recommending a particular host which is faster)

Idk if you've read?

But this has been exhausted in discussion, and I don't think there's much will to debate this topic until another year. Phpbb has its ups and downs, adding signatures would just increase those downs by the way. ;)

I'm sorry but this smells terribly of advertising..... Although I am sure you would quite like a bigger KB size I can't help but think thats not the main point of this thread.

as I see it the KB limit is fine, with a bit of creativeness anybody can make a signature that can look great in the right size. My signature for example did not have to be reduced in quality at all to be in the size.

I remember you posting on RSOF at the time of the first 3rd party software rule change just to advertise your program and it seems to be in the same tone here.

There should be a button that turns off seeing other people's signatures/avatars. It will help the dial-up users and the people with signatures will be happy. It's a win-win situation. However, Tip.it may require extra server space and bandwidth.

There is, in the profile under the preferences as 'Display other user's signatures:Yes No'.

Thanks to WithTheQuickness for the sig!

Next time it's brought up , I'm just going to remove everyones ability to use signatures and avatars completely.

Hows that sound ?

I like to fart silently but deadly in movie theaters

I wouldn't dare tell you what to do m'dear

It's been brought up too many times, and their won't be a change soon.

So locking,
