Where do you talented people start?

I'm far from talented, but I believe that's due to my lack of creativity.

I learned Photoshop from tutorials. That's a large difference from using tutorials in works. What they do is get you familiar with common features and how they work. If you want to take it to the next level, you can see if your school offers a class (my school district does), and take that.

Good luck.

im not extremely talented like alot of ppl like xman, jeppoz and Iw but i hear that its better to just learn from your mistakes and practise rather than using tutorials because tutorials give u a horrible style...

Tutorials are great, but self experimentation is best.

It would also help to decide which style of graphics you would like to do the best, there's no saying that you can't do others, but it could help if you work on a certain style and learn that one well.

Well, I learned most of my stuff gradually through my own practise...

The only advice I can give you is to try something other than what everyone else is doing. Don't fall into the trap of making repetitive Runescape-themed pieces.

Also, make art because you love it, not because you want some fast cash or fame. It helps to be in a less... mercenary mindset.

Yeah, i've learned stuff (quite) gradualy. (lol) When i was new i mostly tried out tuts everyonce and a while, but also tried to find my own style.

now of course, that didn't happen for a while, because with filter piles and such, you can't get much of your own style. I even realy think i kind of progressed slowly back then, because for the first 4-5months i started, It was mostly to make some 'quick cash off of rs.

What I can tell you would help would be this:

- Try and be determained. Go for things others haven't.

- Although you want to stay away from filter piles, for your first few sigs (don't show them probaly) you should just mess with the program, its functions, and the layer styles/layers concept. That way you'll at least have an idea how the program works.

- Always listen to the C&C thats given to you. Even if its harsh (but don't give up, trust me) because, while it may seem realy mean (and belive me, some can.) it will help you in the end.

- And just try and be creative. what kind of style you want to go after is all your choice. If you want to aim for one style, ok. Or you could aim torwards many skills, like abstract/landscape/space/ect. Seemed like what I did, when i thought i wasn't learning much in one style, i'd hop over to another, use the things i learned about in the last style I did, and aply it, and in the process probaly learn something new.

And thats the thing. Abstracts/space/landscape/ect. all at least have things in common. So if you get better at abstracts, you may start to get better at space. Same, if you now can brush that sweet nebula in your space scene, what do you think it will do for your abby brushing? And it goes on and on.

So anyways, good luck.

and i agree with you Zonorhc. Even though thats how i started out, It shouldn't be your main incinitie. Although sometimes, a big competion is what you need to learn something new :D

Well, I have a topic to show the evolution of myself, and how long it takes a person to get to a stage of high talent. My advice is to never give up, and try to look up to someone and try to make signatures like them. Make sure you look at your signatures and see every single part that you see could be improved to try and make the best signature possible, it's the only way. Good luck with your artistry, hope you have fun.

Well, I'm not doing this for RuneScape(I can get way faster cash Runite mining), I'm doing it to see if I might be interested in making this type of work my career one day. I'm really sure this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Thanks everyone for your replies, they've really helped me.

People look down on tutorials, but they are great. Do one a day. It worked for Keiphus. They will help you to learn how to use the program for various effects.

Now if you really want to do art, learn to draw..paint...only way to do that is to start practicing.

Check the tutorials post at the top of the media board for my drawing lessons :)
