It infects the brain within seconds. Unless you can complely cut off circulation from the bite in the first 3 seconds of being bitten, your royaly effed. Ampuation, of course is a cure if you can cut your own limb off in a matter of seconds.

amputation of the bitten limb within 30 seconds of the bite has a less than 10% success rate.

 

Plus, after a limb amputation, that person will be of little help to us, so we should kill them to prevent zombification anyway.
