Burger King / The struggle for farmworkers, 1 cent more

This is something I thought I'd might bring up. Farmworkers that pick tomatoes in Florida, almost at slave labor standards want 1 cent more per pound they pick. Burger King has refused to give them a increase in their wage since 1978~

Think about inflation and how bad that wage is.

Check the website, and get involved.

This coalition also did this with Taco Bell and McDonalds, and they agreed to raise wages.

If Burger King does not agree to raise the per pound wage by 1 cent, please boycott and tell your friends. I never go there anyways ( healthy 4 lyfe :D ) but don't go if you do.

These farmworkers call themselves " The Coalition of IMMOKALEE Workers"

Some pretty awesome protesting .. 8-) Hope Burger King listens.

EDIT : Updated Information Found by BlueLancer and Myself.

Tell your friends please and we can help stop the wealthy greedy profits of Burger King

Haha, my friend, do you realize what you have just said? There will be no greed-stopping among humans anytime soon. Hell, the developed world's economic system is based off greed. We're human, there is no way to stop greed.

[unless, ofcourse, you were referring to this on a smaller scale, such as putting Burger King out of business. Regardless, they still make a hell of alot of money and I don't think any petition is going to change that.]

That's true, but the extents of greeds to which BK is reaching is sick. We're not talking about giving farmer's a CEO salary, we're talking about a $10 bucks increase per 1 ton of vegetables. If that can't be paid for the quality work they do, that's pretty sick.

Talking about sick, compare the salaries of the Burger King CEO and the average Burger King 'front line' worker.

CEO salary total with bonuses: $3 million per year

BK worker salary total with bonuses: $18,000 per year

Just cutting the boss' salary equals to 30,000 tons of tomato with the added $0.01 price tag per pound.

Yeah, the farmers must be unreasonable...

1 cent per pound per worker is actually a lot of money when it adds up. What wage do they make now? (Sorry I didn't read the article; don't trust links).

Actually, it's nothing when it adds up. Burger King's total revenue: $2.48 Billion USD (2006)

Burger King's pure profit last month (ending quarter 3): $49 million dollars

Cost of supplying 5000 restaurants with 2,000 pounds of tomato per day, with 1 cent added to operating costs: $3 million per month

Sure, it's a lot to the greedy shareholders and bosses. But they are already filthy rich and make continuous profits; By increasing the price per pound by a cent they lose less than 5% of their profits while keeping their employees up with todays standard wages.

1 cent per pound per worker is actually a lot of money when it adds up. What wage do they make now? (Sorry I didn't read the article; don't trust links).

I don't really eat at Burger King or other fast food places anyways, but I won't go to Burger King anymore.

If you take into consideration the fact that they do this awful hard work with no real help from the employers , and how hard the work is , their wage is really awful.

From this article.

http://www.wfn.org/2007/11/msg00309.html

"Most tomato pickers still receive roughly the same pay as in 1978 - 40 to 50 cents for every 32-pound bucket of tomatoes they pick. To earn $50 a day, considered a good haul, workers must pick about 125 buckets of tomatoes, or about two tons . A penny more per pound, for each 32-pound bucket of tomatoes would provide the workers a 71-percent increase in wages.

"Stop trying to rob poor farmworkers of the first meaningful raise they've had in almost thirty years," Kirkpatrick urged Burger King and the FTGE in his statement. "It's malicious and shameful. These men and women deserve a fair wage for their backbreaking work - and their penny-per-pound wage increase comes at no cost to the growers and at little cost to the fast-food corporations.""

To other posts, i know human greed is natural, I should have said we can stop the awful unfair wage..

And to yamom, listen, if all you do is sit around and say " oh, a petition or a boycott won't do anything, or good luck with that " then nothing is ever gonna change. It's because of people like that , that sit around and do nothing, that corprations, bad politicans , and other gross people get away with these awful things

If America sits around and lets things like these happend all the more often there won't be an America after too long because the richer are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer

When people act together big things can be acomplished like the Revolutionary war for example

2 tons a day for $50? Goddamn, give them a few cents more.

Exactly, that's outrageous , I consider it slave labor. Think about it.

Its not really slave labor because they are free to leave whenever they want, but I understand what you mean.

On a slightly related note: Companies such as Dole own small islands in the Pacific Ocean where tropical fruits grow. If the locals on that island try to revolt to overthrow oppressive companies, the United States marines step in and crush the revolt. Now that's depressing.

Yes, it's not slave labor but I think it's pretty close. Sometimes they can't leave also, the employers trick some of the workers into debt to maximize profits.

:x Yah, I've heard about that , but not with any specifics. Sweatshops are real common on those small islands I've heard and of course, the marines and other army units help the corporations, and overthrow local peace.

Just makes me mad.. :x
