December 6, 200718 yr (No room in the title) In the newspaper this morning I noticed that a sewer leakage in Nokia, Finland (Yes, I think this is where Nokia originated as a tire company) caused 15,000 people to be infected. Sure, mall and school shootings are awful- but this many is direly serious. They are so weak that they can't go anywhere else to get better, and they can't wash. The symptoms include vomiting, some people are on drips. It started last week- no one was alerted, when whole families got sick, it was accounted to the winter getting sick season. Read th article for details. The town of Nokia, near Tampere, continues to battle massive water problems. Thousands of people have been sickened by infected tap water. Officials have placed a complete ban on the use of tap water in the town. They say even boiled water should not be used, and recommend residents do not bathe or wash dishes with the water Schools in Nokia will be closed on Friday due to the water problem. They are closed Thursday for Independence Day. On Wednesday, hand disinfectants were distributed to schools and daycare centres and clean water supply points set up around the town, near Tampere. Army units are distributing clean water at 18 different locations around town. About 100 soldiers and 50 Finnish Red Cross volunteers have arrived in the town to help. Environmental Health Director Outi Lepist̮̦̉̉ said the ban was enforced after a large pipe burst Tuesday night. It is feared that a high level of disease-causing agents were in the pipe deposits. (Dsavi_x4's note: :ohnoes:) According to information obtained by YLE, adenovirus was found in samples taken from the contaminated water in Nokia. The virus is often found in contaminated water. Thousands Exposed to Bacteria As many as 15,000 people may have been exposed to bacteria following the contamination of drinking water in Nokia last weekend. Samples from patients reveal the presence of both salmonella and kambylo bacteria, reports the National Public Health Institute. The water samples are being studied at the Institute's research centre in Kuopio. Other forms of intestinal coli and enterococcus bacteria were also found, as well as particles of norovirus, which can spread quickly from one person to another. More findings are expected to be released later this week. Infection Physician Eeva Ruotsalainen of the Institute says from 10,000 to 15,000 people could have been exposed to the bacteria. Of these, at least 250 have sought medical attention so far. Tampere University Hospital has treated dozens of patients from Nokia, including more than 50 children. City officials have been looking house-to-house for elderly people who may be ill, and asked residents to check on their neighbours. Meanwhile, complaints have been received over the quality of water distributed to people. Many are worried about the high level of added chlorine. However, the municipal authorities in the town said residents would be compensated for harm caused due to the water contamination. The passage of waste water into the drinking water supply in Nokia has led to widespread investigations at other purification plants. A police investigation into the incident has also been set up. Police that a preliminary probe has found indications of negligence, but not of intentional wrongdoing. A city of 30,000 some 20 kilometres from Tampere, Nokia is best known for the mobile phone company that got its start there, and the Nokia boot and tyre companies that split off from it within the past few decades.(Dsavi_x4: I was right!) YLE What a way to spend Finland's 90th birthday today.

December 6, 200718 yr Even though this clearly wasn't an act of terrorism, this should clearly demonstrate that even an accident can poison large water supplies, let alone intentional planting of dangerous chemicals into the pipelines and main water feed. The US is pretty lucky this hasn't happened yet, nearly every human in the US uses tap water in one way or another (if not for drinking, at least for cooking/washing dishes/showering etc)... And there are quite a lot of motives for some people in the world to contaminate americans...
December 6, 200718 yr Author Sorry, BLuelancer, I can't help but laugh. Finland attacked by terrorsts? Even though you clearly show that you know it wouldn't happen, the idea is just... weird. You've got the right Nokia, yep. Wait, I forgot to say, wasn't this the cause of SARS? (A sewage leak, as in) And also, Finland is very western and domesticated- I'm an American and I can stand to live here without dieing because of Americanness deprivation. But sometimes I do need some peanut butter, marshmallows, vinegar potato chips and root beer to keep me alive.
December 6, 200718 yr Sorry, BLuelancer, I can't help but laugh. Finland attacked by terrorsts? Even though you clearly show that you know it wouldn't happen, the idea is just... weird. Well.. Not really. In todays world everything is possible, even if the mall bombing a few years ago and the latest school shooting in Finland were done by depressed teenagers.. It just shows there are people even out there, with nothing to live for. They will give their lives to kill others in a massive scale.
December 7, 200718 yr Sorry to go all bleeding heart on everyone but I think something like this is more significant and news worthy. It's kind of sad how 'that's just Africa' and whenever something like this happens in the western world (even on a rediculously small scale relative to Africa), it's worth being on the news or having it's own topic. Yeah, yeah, I totally understand the dynamic of having novel news, not just day after day of 'africa is still knee deep in crap' (figuratively speaking) but still, it's pretty sad.

Yeah, now that I think of this, the finnish news was pretty pathetic compared to the sad fact you posted (there are 1.5 million+ little kids in the world dying because they don't have clean water). I searched other news sites, actually only like a few hundred people in Finland caught diseases, and nobody is at risk of dying. I guess people became immune to news from poor countries, and think it's somehow normal and accepted for those people to live in sub-par conditions. Maybe I should go to a poor country to try and help...
December 7, 200718 yr Sorry, BLuelancer, I can't help but laugh. Finland attacked by terrorsts? Even though you clearly show that you know it wouldn't happen, the idea is just... weird. TBH, pretty much everything is terrorism nowadays. Grandma doing her shopping is probably terrorism(bear with me:P) On topic: That sucks. Thats one of the worst ways to get sick. That happened to me in mexico...not fun. Listen to the mighty words of Bloodredsword. Tip it MGC Xbox live leader board!

I totally agree. 1,000 deaths per day in Congo due to hunger/disease.[1] 255,000 to 400,000 deaths (and counting) estimated from the Darfur conflicts.[2] 18,000 children die per day across the world due to hunger.[3] Nobody really wants to see these things. They would rather here about cars going through second floors, people suing God, etc. :) Commercial value is what news is all about, after all.
December 7, 200718 yr I don't mean to be a wet blanket but do we have to hear about every news story where someone catches an illness or dies? Go away wet blanket. I'm sick of news articles too, the crappy uninteresting ones, but something like this is quite serious and I found it interesting.

December 7, 200718 yr I wonder if their distributing chlorinated water to kill any bacteria that the healthy people have that might yet turn into disese, or if its form a citys water supply (which has to contain a disinfectant). I hate chlorinated water, tastes like crap maybe because im on a well so im not used to the taste.

When you wash dishes, you use soap that kills bacteria. Now the shower thing... well... I don't know, but where I'm at, we have filtered water for everything.
December 8, 200718 yr I don't mean to be a wet blanket but do we have to hear about every news story where someone catches an illness or dies? This is actually pretty serious and interesting. Not to mention 15,000 people which is pretty big. Quit. PM me if you play The Conduit to exchange friend codes.

Neither of these worked on the bacteria here. They told them at first to boil water for 5 minutes before using, but it didn't work so more people got sick. I searched other news sites, actually only like a few hundred people in Finland caught diseases, and nobody is at risk of dying. Care to state your sources? My source, YLE, is the CNN of Finland.

December 8, 200718 yr How is that possible to accidently poison a massive water supply? Surely they would have known what would happen! Click my signature for my blog!
